Taric is a fantastic champion for beginners who want to learn the ropes of playing support.
Say what you want, but he totally is.
As opposed to "Playmakers" like
or
who tend to breed bad habits among support players.

Taric isn't a "burst" support. He is a counter engage support. His preferred play style is actually very passive. Half the time he will stand right next to his carry to "shield" them with his W aura and then he will heal them right back up with his Q. The use of E is to peel. It's not a great engage tool. And Taric's ultimate is a steroid ability that empowers all his other abilities. This is what he uses when the enemy tries to steal his main bitch (Ezreal) away from him. The steroid pretty much makes him hit harder, heal stronger and (little known trait) improves his W aura's shielding ability. A majority of the time you don't want to be using W for the armor shred unless your carry is safe and going for a kill. But if you are going to die using this ability before you go can really give your team enough of an edge to inch out a win in that team fight.
Gems.
a none mobile failure of a tank who is getting a rework because he has to be gimped to not completely destroy people? no. blitz isn't a play maker he is actually a good way to learn skill shots and how to land them since its a good speed and is pretty straight forward champions like janna, soraka, sona,Alistar, and braum are better choices to learn support since they teach you to do what supports are made to do which is peel and keep your team alive. thresh is only counted as a support because his kit is so overloaded that he just does better then most supports.
Taric and other disengage supports only work if your adc can cs well, which is the same reason janna alistar and braum hold so much value at the pro level
Agreed on the good basic support part, so are

I started off as a taric main
Support?
Psh. I think you mean FULL ARMOR CARRY TOP.
fair point actually
Taric support? Hell no, Taric brings his gems top lane
If you want to learn how to play support just grab sightstone. GG.
When I first tried support personally I went with Morg/Sona their kits are pretty straight-forward and I liked being able to lock down the enemy.
I tried Taric, and really struglled with him and didnt like him at all. I reccomend Blitzcrank, at least u learn skillshots buts that my point of view. And I didnt like Tarics voice either :P Got annoyed by the "Emeralds is "something" "Sapphire turns to ....". Blitz and Morgana are my picks if u wanna learn the support role.
What bad habbits are those 2 breeding exactly? Because it sounds more like you are finding a dumb reason to bash those 2.
Totally agree. If you have trouble in lane, its hilarious to start 36 Armor Runes and 0-30-0. You have almost 100 armor at level 3.
But he's also pretty boring to play right now :/ so people learning support would probably give up because it's a "stupid role". Maybe soraka or nami would be a better first choice for your criteria
Taric isn't support guys hes a Top lane carry

Man people here are whack. Taric is GREAT in some cases. AD heavy team? Grab a tristana, graves, or sivir and go wreck objectives in less than 2 seconds with Taric ult... and DOMINATE team fights with Taric ult. Always build frostburn. Always get locket or mikael. Always start relic shield into targon. If you are dominating dont bother getting Fotm. From here its cake walk. Oh, and stuff like this is common in bronze when playing Taric:

I play Taric aggressively his early armor boost high starting atk and stun means he can just walk up to the enemy adc and pound the hell out of them.
I wasn't a fan of Taric when I was starting out. His passive play style bugged me. The first champ I learned to support with was actually Morgana (an off meta pick back in pre season 3). After that I played as Lux for a bit but liked using her mid lane more. I didn't start enjoying the support role until I got Thresh. I had practice with skill shots thanks to my time playing Lux and Morgana. Learning to chain his CC for easy kills for my ADC felt very rewarding. After that I started to delve deeper into the role and explore other champions.
But if I had to recommend one for newbie players I think Soraka is the best choice. She is a passive support but can be used offensively with her Q poke. That and she is super cheap. 450 IP isn't a huge loss in IP if you don't like her. Morgana gets the 2nd vote though as that's who I started on.
Taric was the first Champion I bought, and have never regretted it. I have almost 70.k followers on him and I'm not stopping anytime soon. He is the perfect counter-engage support.
