I am not entirely sure who to buy. I basically want someone who can engage and initiate while also focus down a champion and tank while doing so and do a decent amount of damage. I am not a good top laner, so I am not sure if Renekton is user friendly (never tired him) and I like the idea of Skarner able to yank out a target and have the team focus them while still able to maintain survivability.
Who do you think I should pick?
Go Renekton, he's a great intro into Bruisers and very forgiving in lane with his Q heal.

Renekton is by for the better choose in this. Skarner is so bad you will play him once and never play him again till they end up reworking him completely
Skarner is getting buffed of the PTR, so he's not really a bad choice. What it seems to come down to though, is would you rather have a jungler or a top laner? Honestly, I think the jungle sucks right now, so even though I think Skarner is going to be ok, I'd get Renekton.
I love Skarner, but I'd definitely pick Renekton since you want a champ for top lane (Skarner is a bit of a mess nowadays anyway, and is strictly a Jungler)
Neither Renekton nor Skarner is in an amazing spot at the moment, but I'd spring for Renekton.
Well Renekton is a sub par jungle. And Skarner is a questionable choice top lane.
Renekton is pretty strong top lane IMO. Skarner is mid tier at best as a jungle currently
Renekton is a very strong early game laner with a lot of push power, damage, and a lot of sustain. He's known to fall off a bit in teamfights later in the game but he can absorb a good amount of abuse and dish a lot out if you play him well.
Pretty good solo top laner, with good substantial self-heals. Late game, he could become a monster tank combined with his ult, giving himself an auto Sunfire. Also pretty mobile by dashing into enemy team deep just to land a stun.
A good jungler with a pretty good jungle camp clearing time, although his ganks is pretty narrow, since his E is his only CC ability. In late game, he is a powerful anti-assassin tank who can decapitate a single assassin with his ult(hello 
) and makes his team easier to focus the poor target down fast.
