Where the hell is League going?

Burnt Light··138 votes·8,553 views

We're cramming so much kits into 1 champion

We're making OP stats like true damage and %health over abundant

Mobility keeps rising

We're now making CC blockers in skills

Tanks are becoming more bursty

Burst champions are becoming more tanky

What's next, is Twitch gonna dig a hole and instantaneously go 1200 range of a dash?

Oh but it's so much fun playing OP champions

My biggest issue is how mobility is so common that champions are often considered bad for not having any.

Look at Lucian, he's played soo often in the LCS as an ADC though I think he's lost like 95% of the games he's in. He's played because he has a low cooldown dash and also a movement speed buff. Aside from that I can't really think of why people play him. He's currently (not on the PBE) outclassed by most ADCs in a certain aspect aside from mobility.

Pretty sad that any champion could be considered viable and a popular LCS pick for simply having mobility.

honestly, i almost hate lucian now because of all the stuff they did to him after release. on release, while he was too strong, he was a very unique champ and wasnt overly complex. then they removed the slow removal on his dash and the cd reset on ult kills. then they tried out no cost and scrapped it after a while. idk if this was a glitch or not, but last game i played with a lucian his w ult combo wouldnt even increase his ms. i mean, sure his passive is unique and it's cool that his passive reduces his e cd, but i just cant stand that they removed EVERYTHING.

People are asking to make everyone OP like dota champs, then when everyone is getting OP they are saying Riot is ruining their game...

RetroRage968 votes

I never wanted everyone to be OP.

Silica SAO4 votes

That's not even comparable. Dota heroes are "OP" in the sense that each of them is extremely good in one aspect and below average on the rest, so every team comp will have a niche that a specific hero fits with the best. Very few Dota heroes are above average in everything, while those that are (e.g: Mirana) usually have no strengths while having certain drawbacks. Under such a system, heroes that are slightly underpowered will still retain a niche that allows them to be picked in competitive settings, which explains the wide hero pool in competitive Dota.

What this thread is referring to, however, is the worrying direction that champions in LoL are being released/reworked to be strong at every aspect with no clear weaknesses. When the strong champions are good at everything, weaker ones have no niche and end up not being picked at all. This is why competitive LoL has a narrow champion pool and the games become stale very fast with low variety in picks.

Naut has been out for forever and his kit is grossly overloaded... You have thresh... Anivia, fiddle, cho... There have always been champs with overloaded kits and you're just noticing this now?

I like the variety the new champions are bringing to the game. I would rather not have everyone playing champs with yi or tryn level kits. ==

IcyPepper5 votes

Naut's overloaded? o.O I thought he was a pretty good example of a what a cc tank should be.

LeeDark5 votes

He has three forms of CC, tankiness, sustained damage if you ignore him, mobility near walls... which is everywhere, and the ability to play in every lane and the jungle viably. That is an overloaded champion.

Thresh, for all his "overloaded" kit, can only do one thing. Be a tanky support.

Chromatic Eagle3 votes

Isn't adc thresh a thing?

LeeDark6 votes

Depends on what you mean by "a thing." I'm a big fan of Solwolf's Break the Meta series. It's fun and all, and by that definition, plenty of builds are a thing. Doesn't make them really viable.

ADC Thresh is a good example. While he has good self-peel, he lacks any DPS steroid. In fact, his ONE AD-scaling ability encourages NOT attacking for long periods of time. ADC Thresh is capable of some good burst on his very first hit in a teamfight, but he will not outdamage ANY equally skilled, equally farmed real ADC. Saying "Anything is possible" doesn't mean the same thing as saying "Anything is viable."

The Loveless10 votes

Well they need new content, and to make the game better. I also don't care for multiple passives and overloaded kits, but I can deal. Riot can't just sell skins, they need fresh character interactions. I've taken very long breaks from this game at least 3 times because I have no desire to get my rank past Silver and be a pro player like most others would.

Sadly I'm becoming a casual gamer, but I do consider myself skilled.

I like reworks when they make champions better. It's foolish to think that all old characters are just fine, when in reality a good half of them are dated. To me, Kayle is boring and often oppressive when she gets the right items. I don't care how good she may be with Devourer, I haven't picked her for two years. Morgana is okay at what she does, but I'm never excited when playing her. And fighting her? She pushes the wave and throws soil at your feet to make sure you can't get in lasthit range without suffering damage. Farm lanes are boring.

On the other hand, I think Amumu has a great kit and would only give him a visual update so his attacks have more pizzazz...I could also help his mana pool to bring him up to speed with newer champions who don't have that problem. Shen's ult and taunt are cool, but the rest of his kit don't fit a ninja, and aren't exciting. He doesn't need to be an assassin, but a fighter would look more appropriate. Just as they are doing with Urgot, perhaps giving Shen's ult to another champion would work if they replaced it.

I remember playing beginner bots at level 1 and being scared of Shen when he came around, but then I realized he hit no harder than a paper bag.

Juggernauts are actually a good idea. With all the mobility in the game you shouldn't be getting caught by them, but if you do youll wish that you hadn't :P

tbh we could delete every champion released since season 3 and be good. Sure I'd be sad to lose Quinn/Liss/Braum/VK, but we'd also have gotten rid of Thresh, Yasuo, Jinx, Kalista, Gnar, Azir, Rek'Sai, Ekko, and Tahm Kench, all of whom are bullshit.

I hate to say this... but adding true damage to Syndra was not the way to go in buffing her, however much she did need some buffs.

The Loveless1 votes

If her mana costs on W & E were decent, I think she'd be perfect. Right now she suffers from running oom from spamming sphere, and that's a good thing because her range with those toys are annoying. You can balance this by lowering the cost on W & E so that she's only oom if Q is all she uses, and this way she'll be able to poke and then go in for the kill when someone is low enough. Currently, you can get someone low during lane phase by harassing with spheres, but then you don't have the mana to slow or stun them with your other skills -- or worse, you don't have stun/knockback when being ganked.

Her problem isn't damage. As you said, true damage on Q is not the way they should buff her.

EDIT: about her mana, I know Athene's is a thing, but that item hasn't been good since the MR and AP got nerfed. You do no damage and don't get much defense from it either. On top of that, the regen isn't fast enough to keep up with Syndra's harass pattern + sphere prep.

League is going to Chicago according to Riot.

Kalarepa4 votes

It goes away from RTS roots towards Mortal Kombat fast clicking style.

Transgressor5 votes

RTS games where never about micro-managing a single unit to the point of disgust, that's all you get for the whole game.

MOBA games where never about micro-managing and macro-managing multiple units at the same time throughout the entire game, resources, positioning, diplomacy and strategic terrain usage.

MOBAs might have originated from a mod of an RTS game, but they are practically apples to oranges at this day and age.

TheShinx4 votes

I stated this a while back on reddit. Riot is only concerned about 1 thing. Money. How much Money can they earn. How much can they scrape out of players by releasing skins/Ward skins/Chroma packs (which lets be honest could be done in paint by a 2 year old), and other stupid things of that nature. I will honestly say I have spend over 1000 CAD on this game. Am I happy about that number? Well no, but it's already done so I wont cry over spilled milk either.

Look at the patches recently (Including this last one) on average each patch contains 3-5 skins a few balances, Barely ANY bug fixes regardless of how many are reported on PBE/Live forums (Personally posted about Caitlyn's auto bug multiple times for the last few months), And very few balance changes made to champions who see 50% win rates across all ELO brackets. For example Heimer. In NA alone over the last 30 days (Same with last month as well) he was above 50% in every ELO division.

I look at riot now compared to season 3 start and wonder what happened. There were bug fixes constantly, champions were on the way to being balanced and the amount of champions used back then was insane.

At the end of the day I have come to think riot only cares about the money they can get. Reworks and buffs bring in more sales then people imagine. Honestly I am not sure riot has many chances left to make this game keep it's top spot safe. With all the recent shit that has happened over the last few months I don't see the game being relevant to the Esports world. With Dota's increased popularity for Pro-players, new games showing that they can improve over they MOBA market.

I hope riot can figure out how to make this game work like it used to. They also need to make use of the resources they have and look at what players are complaining/Talking about and get engaged a little more.

The Loveless2 votes

Don't feel too bad about the money thing. I may not have spent 1k, but I used to just throw away money on subbing to games like Phantasy Star & WoW. It's not a bad thing to support a game you enjoy.

Big Lincoln3 votes

what tank is bursty

ArkenStorm2 votes

morde? :P

Big Lincoln3 votes

no, he's almost entirely sustained damage if he's actually building tank

any mordekaiser built to optimize for 100-0 damage is fragile

ArkenStorm2 votes

he's relatively bursty with his q, but you are right. also a bit of facetiousness there, I wasn't really being serious. more of a jab at the intended identity. The whole rework is a mess, ruined his identity.

Big Lincoln2 votes

idk, it's not all that bad.

I think what Mordekaiser lost was primarily 1) pushing power/his mass-waveclear, and 2) high burst/sustained damage AND high durability (he's been pushed to sustained damage)

the new Mordekaiser does do a fair amount of damage, but TBH I think all the other juggernauts will outdamage him by virtue of both being able to itemize better AND get their damage off more reliably. I think he actually starts off decently powerful, but his late game is probably the worst of the 4 assuming you build him with the new juggernaut items

Mordekaiser is actually an even bigger counter to assassins now though; a tank Mord with just a few damage items still does 'burst' to squishy opponents, and now he's actually completely immune to burst himself with the right items. So it's a double-edged sword, I guess

j j3 votes

If anything ruined the game in the past couple years it certainly was

  1. Mobility

  2. Mobile assassins

  3. bruisers capable of both damage and tankyness. It wasn't a middle ground these guys could potentially do more than squishies.

  4. less mana dependent champions. (energy, resourceless)

  5. reworks that gutted champions.

  6. removal of dfg for Luden's. (luden's does too much and works on every mage)

They are going in the right direction BUT THE PROBLEM IS EVERY CHAMPION ISNT AT A PERFECT POINT FOR A KIT YET! They don't all have a good kit and are old. However, League is going in the right direction.

A year or so ago, you saw 10-15 champions frequently in LCS. Now you see a little more than double that! Anyone notice how you are thinking more about bans lately? Should I ban Vayne? Should I ban Garen? Should I ban Shyvana? Should I ban Master Yi? THATS GOOD! It shows that all champions are becoming threats, slowly yet surely.

Exactly. The process is going to take time, but soon nobody will lose simply because they chose inferior champions.
