Tips for Fighting MaoKai?

I've never really seen Mao as all that much of an issue before, i mean he is really tanky and has a decent amount of CC but still. The other day though i was playing 3v3's and we were up against a Heimerdinger, Xin Zhao, and MaoKai. The Xin Zhao wasn't much of an issue although with Sated Devourer he was healing like a monster. Heimer was more obnoxious then he was an actual threat. The only threat to us and the reason we lost was because of Mao.

Here is the game http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/1969809240/206176227?tab=stats

I was Volibear, my friends were Syndra and Renekton. Our Syndra was almost a non-factor in teamfights because Xin and Mao would jump her and kill her so fast we couldn't peel fast enough. We would kill Heimer and sometimes Xin, but Mao was different. Not only could he out damage both of us, he was also twice as tanky. I thought that my build would allow me to kill him mostly because i have an execute that deals damage based on my max hp as well. Still he had more health and resistances then me and out damaged me by like 23k damage.

Just to be clear, i am not complaining about Maokai, im asking what i can do different next time. What items should i have built, should i have focused him instead of Heimer and Xin, should i have tried to peel better for Syndra instead of trying to kill them, etc? Im just trying to get better at dealing with him because i apparently have no idea how to stop him.

EDIT: Well thanks for the comments, i think the general consensus is that i should have peeled for Syndra better.

Did you never pay attention when you played pokemon? Fire types beats grass types. Bring this summoner 14

You can also beat grass types by playing poison and ice types, but not rock, ground or water types. He counters those.

Sadly maokai is a supp tank, he can't carry on his own, so xin was the real trouble, and maokai was the wall of bark in the way. Maokai excels in team fights, so small skirmishes is what you want. Idk how the game went sec by sec, but turtling towers with your dps poking out can yield aome nice results, and if someone dives, play them out and peel your dps like a damn orange. But voli needs some ult tuning. It is lack luster imo

so pretty much your burst mage was dying super fast, and voli and rene couldn't do much?

well voli and rene both have pretty bad late games, if he got tanky that fast then you were screwed to begin with, they just probably had a better comp and stomped your team.

Maokai has very low base MR (30 with no scaling) so he's weak to magic damage. So I guess this is another "you should have protected the carry" comment. He also had no MR runes (for some reason), so even with a spirit visage, he would have had 90 MR total.

all of your champs spam spells which procs his passive super fast especially if you wernt aiming him but he was still blocking some damage. and like you said you shouldnt have been trying to kill thema s much as keep them off of syndra keep her behind you when xin and mao jump on her flip one of them off and allow her to push them back voli hasnt been a strong fighter
