Your Support Is Not Expendable Garbage

Stephenizgod··129 votes·6,399 views

I've noticed a really bad trend lately, people acting like Supports are meat shields, decoys, or just straight abandoning them. The Support is not your disposable garbage, they are not expendable, they are your teammate. Too many times I die because i use my shields/heals/CC in order to peel for my team only for them to let enemies jump right on me so they can get away. Like literally just let enemies walk right past them and do nothing to help me even though i just used everything to help them.
Its a shitty feeling to see your 5/2/x score and my 0/6/5 score, when I got you all 5 of those kills and all 6 of my deaths are because you can't dodge a skillshot so i had to take it or I used my abilities to save you while i get attacked only for you to ditch me. Its even worse when i get "Omg why are you dying so much?" well because you can't protect yourself and you are a crappy teammate...
Notice how when we hit their support their team jumps into action to save them? Notice how they win the teamfight because you abandoned me and they didnt abandon their teammate? Why are you not seeing that?

I wanted to just say "fuck it" and protect myself, let my teammates die to ensure i survive, use my teammates to get away.... but I am there to Support you so that is what i try to do. If we lose you can blame me all you want, but i know that your 10 kills wouldn't be there if it wasnt for me and your deaths would be double or triple what it is...

Please treat your support like they are part of the team.

EDIT: Ok so a lot of people are completely misunderstanding my point. I am fully expecting to die alone when i sacrifice myself. As the Support, it is my job to get the ADC fed, they can't do that when they are dead. So yes i will gladly die to save the ADC, that is not what my post is about though.

When in lane and the enemy Supp and ADC are focusing me, I land all my CC, but my ADC is doing nothing about it and i end up dying for free. I am part to blame for getting caught, but so is the ADC for not helping. If the ADC gets caught its my fault for not protecting them, according to them. When I use my abilities to help our front line and lock down carries but my team just runs away, this leaves me with no abilities to defend myself with.

Example: Shen is waiting for me to land a Binding, i was Morgana, and is pinging Lucian. So I get Lucian with it, his team comes to help and i land a 3 man ult with Lucian still in my Q, so i ping to go in. Im fully expecting Shen to Taunt in and for Ezreal to pick them off from behind, that is what the smart teammates would do as i had 4 out of 5 people locked down, 2 of which were carries. So i shield Shen so Lux can't bind him and wait for his taunt. Nothing happens. In fact Shen taunts over a wall to escape and Ezreal is farming minions. Of course with no way to defend myself I get killed, Ezreal retreats, and Shen GOES BACK IN AND DIES.... This didn't happen just once either, I was constantly being abandoned. Id take Lux binding for Ezreal because the Lux would wait for him to warp before throwing it and he was incapable of dodging, but id land it on Lucian and still Ezreal would do nothing.

This happens to my far too often, I am forced into sacrificing myself for an incompetent ADC, who does nothing to help me even when it is in their best interest to do so. Not only that but most teams wont even both to use any form of CC to help me, because i am just the Support. If you watch the pros you notice that they treat every part of their team as important. Yes, the Support can be sacrificed, but it is not ideal and it does not mean you should do it. They are part of the team too and are in fact a very important part. If they have to sacrifice themselves it most likely means YOU screwed up.

It depends. Technically you are the most expendable on the team, and if my support gets caught and i know he's dead, I'm not going to kamikaze save them.

If players are ditching their teammates even though the fight is winnable they're probably too retarded to do anything anyways, and probably would've done it if it was the mid laner or top laner getting caught, so it's not unique to supports in this scenario.

Flamiing the support is something I never see anymore. All the people I see actually applaud the support for doing well and if he's not most people tend to think "oh he probably doesn't really main support and I forced him into that role, not my fault but also not his."

what you deserve4 votes

If your support gets grabbed by an enemy thresh or voli support at level 3 and gets focused, you can usually all-in the enemy adc to save your support instead of just trying to run. I've actually never failed at this but my teammates fail it all the time in my elo

Stephenizgod9 votes

No one on the team is expendable, you should always try to get out with everyone alive. Obviously this is not always ideal so the least you can do is take them out with the person you are sacrificing, that way their sacrifice was not worthless. The Support is not expendable, but if they must die to save you, make sure you try to make something of it. If you just survive over and over again and do nothing, it is overall a loss for the team. If you could have done something it is not the Supports fault they are so negative.

If I know its a lost fight, I might try to put some damage down on their adc to get him to back off, but if I know that an engage from me when you're already caught out and going to die will result in a double kill for them then it is better to back off until you are back.

Seems a lot of people are misunderstanding my point... When i sacrifice myself, that is for the team and i expect to die, running in after me is suicidal. When the enemy walks past all 4 of my teammates, alone, and attacks me and no one is doing anything about it, that is when i have a problem. When i land all my CC and shield/heal/buff my allies and they use it to run away leaving me with no way to defend myself, that is when i have a problem. When in lane and the enemy ADC and Support are focusing me and i have the ADC exhausted and CC'd, but my ADC is still farming minions or just straight runs, that is when i have a problem.

If you get caught out and they see this, they're not jumping in to save you. It's kind of like if an adc sees a fight going south, it's better for him to live and get out to be able to insert upcoming obj or scenario here then jump in trying to make some kind of LCS play. You're hurting your team with that perspective to be honest. It's all about the bigger picture.

Stephenizgod2 votes

The bigger picture is we lose because our ADC is too scared to trade with the enemy... He isn't getting fed because he isnt taking advantage of the enemy using CD's and Summoners to kill me. This is why its a problem. I am not getting caught, i am being abandoned, sacrificed against my wishes. When they get caught am I suppose to just leave them?

I once went Nunu support about a week or two ago. I've gone Nunu before and know what his strengths are and how he is best used (for me) as a support. It was me and Lucian against a Zilean and Tristana. My first thought was, she is going to push and Zilean is going to help, so I got my W first and was using it over and over again on Lucian. Instead of using this AS and MS boost to shoot and stop the push, he just ran around... and waited for the minion to be low enough to "last hit". I was about to say "gg" right there because Tristana got her E first and was really pushing hard, the amount of minions went to three times the amount; that's about the time where he even started hitting stuff. He even waisted a lot of mana from his Q, rather than just start with his simple E to spam his passive (which would be what I would do). Things only got worse as he would never get close to Tristana or Zilean, and I couldn't help because of that. In fact, I made things worse trying to help the guy, by trying to E Tristana... that only made her and Zilean focus me while Lucian ran back to the turret. I got labeled as a feeder at the end because they always focused me in team fights. So that leaves me with what I hate when I support:

  • If the enemy is not last hitting, why does my ADC think it so clever to keep last hitting?
  • If I'm being targeted, at least deal some damage to them. If at best, you could get two kills out of it, I've supported enough to know that its not hard.
  • Junglers should gank often, even if level 6 is far off, getting to level 3 should mean they have 3 abilities open. They can do a combo of some sort and damage the enemy if possible or make them fall back if the bush is warded. It may not do much, but it helps pushing, CS, and gives us a upper hand in the lane.
Alleo1 votes

When I play ADC the thing I hate to play against the most is a zoning bot lane ie. Ashe and Sons or Tristana and Zilean because without cc as an ADC you can't get close enough to do damage without them zoning you out with poke abilities. That being said, the Lucian in your situation could have at least been lining up his q's to trade with the Zilean or Tristana through minions.

Here's the order of importance.

ADC > Mid > Top ~ Jungle > Support. I am not disagreeing with you that the support is not just a meatshield but technically anyone is expendable for the ADC. This is why even long ranged mid mains rarely complain about no peel while ADCs complaining about no peel is everyday.

The ADC is theoretically the most important member of the team because they provide late game DPS at a safe range. There is no other champion class that can provide sustained damage so safely. They also are useless when they don't have gold so usually teams will funnel their gold into the ADC.

This is why assassinating the enemy ADC is a good strategy: you are taking out the player who is likely to have the most gold on the enemy team, and the highest priority target, all in one go. Even if you die, as long as you yourself are not an ADC, it's worth since you'll likely have less gold and be a lower priority position.

This is why Rengar and Nidalee are good: they can assassinate on a JUNGLER or TOP LANE budget rather than a MID LANER budget, allowing your mid to be reserved for things that are not easily found in the jungle or top such as ranged waveclear, poke and high damage AOE. Even if they trade 1 for 1, you are trading a jungler or top for an ADC.

This is also why Brand and Annie Support were considered good: they are an AP damage threat, but from the support position. If they nuke any non-support down in a fight, they have already made a great contribution and it doesn't matter what happens to them afterwards, because they've already taken out a higher gold position as the lowest gold position.

what you deserve8 votes

Do you watch LCS? I don't want to spoil any games but I definitely saw a couple of supports carrying. None of the winning teams just left their supports to die.

BluePolarizer2 votes

You shouldn't leave your support to die but if it's you or the ADC, better you. I play support alot. I'll sacrifice myself or distract the enemy if it means my ADC can get away. Same when I play top. When I play jungle things are different because I control the smite that allows objectives. If it's past the 20 minute mark I won't die for my ADC, only because the enemy team can get baron.

If it's in lane, of course not, you never leave your support to die because you're next. If it's in a mid-game or late-game fight though, sometimes sacrifices have to be made.

It Hertz When IP2 votes

Especially funny when the enemy team loses one-two people killing you, only to gain fuck-all gold from it because you're at 0/6. Like seriously, at 0/4, even if you have a bezillion assists you're still worth less than the average cannon minion. Meanwhile my teammates can escape alive and sometimes take down one of the enemy damage dealers in the process.

Stephenizgod9 votes

Well I agree with you somewhat, I know that me dying is better than my ADC dying. The issue comes when i am continuously dying for my ADC and nothing is coming from it other than me dying over and over again. I have a 0/12 score and they have a 2/0/x score because they are just watching me die and doing nothing about it despite my best efforts to A) Feed them kills and B) make sure they live. If the Marksmen can't even get a kill off of a Morgana Q and Ult while the enemy ADC is exhausted and my Black Shield is on them, than it is pointless to protect them right? My issue is i just can't abandon teammates unless i know for sure they are dead.

BluePolarizer2 votes

in such a case abandon the ADC and go gank with mid and jungle. I've done this alot when I realize early on that my ADC is a sack of potatoes. Eventually they'll die enough such that they're worth less than a cannon minion but that's OK if you can snowball the game hard enough such that the other champs can 1 shot the enemy ADC.

Hold the fucking phone...

Where is it written that it is the supports job to feed the ADC. Bot lane is a DUO, where 2 people are working to achieve a goal. The goal is the same for both summoners, get money, protect your turret, each other, then try to kill the enemies/turrets or deny them gold, in most cases. Now letting the ADC get the creeps and kills is the most efficient way to do this true, but no where and I mean no where, is there anything remotely close to "Support is my, the ADC's, bitch and they get me fed and die because I'm an ignorant, sad af and can't wipe my own ass ADC.

Now don't get me wrong, in an even well-classed match, if there is going to be a death, then supp is generally worth the least amount of gold to the other team, so the supp taking the death is still pursuing the goal.

But, if I'm supporting an ADC that is a mental midget, i tell them once or twice to be more careful, position better...yada yada, if they don't take the advice, I don't abandon them, though I do stop taking needless deaths for them.

Alright, l will tell you why as an AD main i often have to ditch my sup, and yes i get flamed for it. Let me explain this, i started playing basicaly s5 and played a good 800 games from bronze to gold, that entire time i played mostly 1 champion, vayne, and till this day this is just about the only ad i play so i know very well when she is strong or weak. This seaskn reset put me in bronze and i find my self doing what you describe often. Its very hard to communicate to the support sometimes how fucking weak vayne is during lane and she really doesnt become impressive till lvl 12. But leonas insist on always going for that hot pre six enagage in to mf, and after about 800 of these ranked games my attitude is exactly that, if the support goes in and i feel like i will get outtraded, i ping, but fuck no im not trying to go ham in draven fuck no. I say this because sky willims started this trend a few years back on hating on the adc and how hard the life q support is, you know what, if you dont like supporting you dont have to. This just sounds like a post game rage you had because of a shity team, ofcourse you shouldnt ditch the sup, but man if im 5/0 about to die, ima use you as a shield so that we dont lose the shut down global gold, simple as that

...We are a part of the team.

We're the Escapes in Janna, Karma, Sona's cases.

We're the Engage in Leona, Thresh and Tahm Kench's Cases.

We're the CC-bots who spam wards and guide our team, and if dying to save the ADC who's pumping out damage is what my team needs me to do, then it's what I'm going to do. My Damage potential < My Team's Damage potential. If I've dropped my CC, then my Job is to stand there and be enticing to the enemy so they focus on me, right in their midst, and not on the Jinx and Syndra pumping out damage.

Let's look at it this way.

Teamfight happens, Enemy Quadrakill Oh No!. You, tho...you survived. But you're a Leona. So...what are you going to do in the meantime? Push back against mid? You don't have the Damage. Stop their Baron or Dragon? You don't have Smite, or the damage. Your team just lost Baron, and just lost the game.

Another way this could have happened!

Teamfight! Enemy Triple-kill, D: You're one of the dead though. This is sad, sure, but in dying, in providing an easier target to chase, your ADC and Jungler got away. Thank the gods!

Now, they, with their Damage, Smite, Etc. Can push waves, Can contest objectives, and Can turn around the teamfight!

See my point?

I am an ADC main and this is my mentality. If you play a tanky support (such as blitz, alistar, leona etc.), then you should be body blocking the shots on your ADC if necessary (in such situations like if you have half health or full health and the ADC is taking the damage and they almost die because in some cases it is unavoidable) mainly because YOU have the sustain to stay alive and keep your ADC alive while they run to heal.

But if you are a squishy (nami, janna, lulu etc.) then both of you need to watch your asses and dodge, dip, dive, duck and dodge. And if necessary and have the health, either one of you should body block a shot on the other.

Bot lane is where the teamwork is most crucial because of ganks and you are having to deal with more than 1 enemy regardless.

I always protect my support if possible. Even if i have full health, i always use the heal if the health on my support is low enough to make me doubt they can survive the next skill shot or auto attack.

This is what happened to me last game: Our jungle: has no wards me, support: goes to the jg to ward me: is warding and sees enemy Leona trying to ward our blue bush me: pings repeatedly for assist my adc: is right there but keeps farming bot instead enemy team: all come to assist Leona and they kill me my team: WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING, KARMA? GOING TO THE JUNGLE WHEN WE HAD NO VISION??? me: ...

Indraneelan5 votes

Sounds like they were right. You went warding on your own, saw leona, all good so far. But you wanted adc to come out of lane and sacrifice farm to engage on leona? No, leona is a rock. You should go back to lane, the safest route possible, and tell the team the bush is warded. Clearly you didn't have vision of the enemy team. You say they all turned up, so your adc and jungler widely recognised that they didn't know the enemy team weren't near so turned down your generous invitation to engage on leona. You stuck around and died.

Karma is a poke support, whilst leona is a (the best) engage and smash you to pieces support. So many bad players don't know when to not engage, and engaging on a tanky support with no vision of the enemy team is the most obvious mistake they always make.

Best case scenario, she really is alone, and you kill her slowly. You have gained a kill. But it's on the enemy support, and you waste the time and map position of three members of your team to do it. Not worth, and that's BEST case.

Athenes Lulu2 votes

What? Sometimes I sacrifice myself so my carries, who are on a killing spree with a high bounty tag, can get away, denying the enemy team that shutdown gold.

If enemies are stupid, I can just get them to force their important spells (like their ults or summoners) on me, and my team can just show up and get an easy win because the enemy team already have no more important spells that should've been used on my carries, not me.

In lane, and your support is in trouble? Maybe it's time to get some trades in, and save your support if still possible; he might even give you a double! And especially when the enemy botlane is focusing him, and not you, the ADC, so why are you still chickening out when you're not in danger?

Getting into trouble as a support is usually an opportunity, not a waste, so quit crying. KDAs on supports don't mean much; you can't judge how good a tank and/or support is by numbers alone. If they are the ones bitching and crying about it, then that's their problem because they are missing out opportunities to turn fights around and just give up.

Though here's one more thing: make sure your team is ready to fight before you even want to engage. If you can't even do that, then that's your problem. Otherwise, you should have a brain to know when or when not to go in. Supports are just as important as their teammates, but sometimes sacrificing yourself for a good cause is necessary sometimes; someone's gotta do the dirty work and clean up the streets.

This stupid board acts like every support is a long suffering hero and every ADC is a toxic villain.

Support mains are usually bro tier, but generally, people playing support have a terrible attitude because they were last pick and were spamming 'mid or feed' in champ select 5 mins ago.

Beldair2 votes

I find that it is quite rare that you get a toxic adc or a last pick feeding "idc" support.

Supports, while vital to any team, are there to help set their team up for kills and sacrifice themselves to protect their team (if warranted and the team is good).

These last pick toxic supports are why some adc's won't help a support in trouble. Why risk yourself when that support purposedly threw themselves into the enemy team knowing they are gonna die just to feed instead of a tactical suicide charge (like my tactical attacks with Braum to ensure my team escapes to safety)

Sambers1 votes

The chances of me saving my support are kinda low tbh, specially if there's a huge minion wave.

Stephenizgod2 votes

It depends on the situation, to say i never use heal on my support is a pretty selfish way to play the game, if it works it works though. Sometimes its better to save your support rather than save heal, the heal will come back but the gold the enemy got and the advantage in lane will not.

Supreme Senpai691 votes

If my ADC screws up, it's entirely expected of me to sacrifice myself to save him. If I screw up, the ADC won't even try to save me even if we could easily get away.

I'm annoyed but okay with this, it just means i can't mess up ever and it helps me get better. What I hate is when I get the ADCs that tell me to hold back a wave of minions so they can't be killed by our tower to let him CS easier. Or the ones that never use heal to help me escape after I get all-in'd. Or the ones that absolutely refuse to let me use my Relic Shield.

What ADCs don't generally understand is that the support is the one who controls the lane. They ward and provide vision, they provide the peel and the poke, they have the ability to start fights and disengage fights. You need to focus on farming and securing kills so you can carry me late-game. Let me focus on the map and when we can go in. I can do it better than you can because I don't have to glance at the minions' HP every two seconds.

Stephenizgod2 votes

Supports are the true carries! Haha but seriously you are right, my job is to do the things you cant, your job is to do the things i cant. Its not a master and servant thing it is two people with different skillsets working together to remove weaknesses.

darkmatchwaldo1 votes

Yeah i'm sorry but if Zed Malphite and MasterYi are heading our way and you didn't notice in time, i will not hesitate to abandon you. I don't care if you're support or not, if your bad map awareness gets you killed i'm not gonna stay and give up the double kill. The example you gave sounds more like your team was kinda just dumb, not that they left you behind because you're just the support. Also how exactly did you land a 3 man ult on morgana when you can only hit two people with it? o.0

Another thing, if you watch pro games teams will regularly sacrifice the support for the greater good of the team. Can you kill their top laner and trade your support for it? WORTH. Sacrifice your support to stall while you finish baron? WORTH! I am a die hard support main so it's not like i'm being condescending, but as the support you kinda are a meat shield or decoy if that's what your team needs.

Stephenizgod1 votes

Lol where are you people getting these scenarios from? Do you read what i am writing? Majority of the comments disagreeing with me are just made up scenarios that twist what i said so it is 100% my fault, this is not the case. I didn't say I get jumped on because im not paying attention and no one saves me... I said I use all my CC, Shield, Buffs, etc. for the team to engage with but they let enemies run right by them to jump on me or run away instead of engaging leaving me with no front line and no CC to defend myself with. If i can't CC them its kind of hard to run when my teammates saved all their abilities to escape. There is such a thing as Cooldowns and when i use my abilities these "Cooldowns" prevent me from reusing them. If i don't have Flash up im basically a walking target, since my entire team, front line included, is already way back at the turret.

Before you say "Well what were you doing using your abilities when we werent ready to engage, id abandon you too if you just blew all your CC without warning." or "if you didnt hit the carries than there is not point in engaging so its your fault." because A) when there is a teamfight and everyone is just waiting for a chance to go in, i don't necessarily need to wait for someone to tell me to go use my CC. Its fairly obvious when we will be engaging and when we are just trying to stall, and B) I normally only hit the carries, if i don't we don't go in because there is no point, so we keep looking for an opportunity until i land my CC on a high priority target. In my original post a specify that i CC and exhaust the CARRIES on the enemy team and i still get left behind even if my whole team i full hp and all there.

So please enough with the made up hypothetical situations that are 100% my fault, because i gave actual examples in my games that happened to me. They are the reason i made the post in the first place, i was getting annoyed that it kept happening.

darkmatchwaldo1 votes

You said people abandoning supports was becoming a bad trend, so I gave you a scenario where i have no qualms about abandoning my support. I didn't just make it up for no reason. Also i see your post as pretty much pointless considering your MAIN argument is about the whole "I use all my CC, Shield, Buffs, etc. for the team to engage with but they let enemies run right by them to jump on me or run away instead of engaging leaving me with no front line and no CC to defend myself with" situation. This is not limited to supports. This happens to every single role. Playing Malphite and you ult in but your team doesn't follow. Landing an epic Mega Gnar combo but your team doesn't follow. Locking up the ADC with Vi but your team doesn't back you up. This is not limited to supports so....what's your point? Yes it sucks that your team didn't have your back, but that doesn't mean everyone thinks supports are worthless meat shields.

Stephenizgod1 votes

That is not really abandoning your support though, thats your support not playing safe and dying for it. Its not your problem if they are not paying attention, that is not what my post i about though.

If i was playing Top lane and noticing this I would be posting about that, but I am only noticing this as a Support. Its more than going in an not being followed up though. During laning phase when I am trying to trade with the enemy because my ADC is getting poked down and instead of helping or trading while i have them CC'd, they will farm or run needlessly. Leaving me with no defenses and no back-up, which usually leads to me dying. My issue is that most people think "Well the support is expendable anyways so its ok to let them die", my point in my post is that they are not expendable. Yes, it is better to lose the Support rather than most other people on the team, but that should be a last resort or at least with their consent. It doesn't mean they are useless and expendable, so all im saying is at least give a bit of effort to being a good teammate. If your support lands all their CC on the carries, either kill them or don't let the front line walk through all of you and watch as your support gets slaughtered. During laning phase, learn to trade WITH your support rather than using them as a decoy to avoid trading. If you want to play safe, simply say so, but sometimes people get hit by abilities and its not always the best idea to abandon your Support.
