What is the Purpose of Hiding Our MMR and How the System Works?

^ serious question, I am sincerely asking why it isn't public knowledge.

I was thinking about how MMR would work once the Role Ranks are introduced and how other websites such as OP.GG will be able to calculate our estimated MMR. Then I was wondering why it is kept hidden from us in the first place, there must be a good reason otherwise it would be visible.

Its not like its actual useful information, but it would be nice to just check it. Might help with understanding why you are being matched with certain ranks though.

EDIT: Bit of a misunderstanding here, I am not asking why we have our current Tier/Division system over an ELO system. I understand that, I know it used to be an ELO system and I understand their reasons for switching.

I am asking why we can't ALSO see our MMR and why we don't how the system actually works. We go to other sites not associated with Riot for approximations of our MMR, most of us do it even though its not useful information simply because it is nice to know. So I am wondering why Riot just doesn't give the exact number so we don't have to guess.

EDIT 2: A lot of people saying that if it were public knowledge it would be abused, but I am fairly certain that MMR is only affected by winning or losing, not personal performance. You go 15-2 and win you get the same raise in MMR as if you went 2-15. The only thing I would like clarified is how they decide to match up MMR's and how it calculates how much you gain/lose.

So they can do fancy stuff without retaliation?

You used to be able to see your MMR before the league system came out. They felt that you were just competing with a number so introduced what we have today. I think that by them hiding your MMR keeps you under the mentality of just climbing the ladder instead of trying to get to a number -- how do I know that this number is good? You don't really unless someone tells you. At least with divisions, it's clearly presented and arguably feels more "league" like.

People might be able to figure out the system and exploit it. There are some smart people out there and I don't think Riot wants to take that risk.

For this argument to exist:

Why am I getting players with drastically different ranks in my ranked game?

Match making is by mmr, not rank.

But the high level player has been performing well and the low player hasn't in their recent games and op.gg says their mmr is normal for their expected divisions.

Only Riot knows their true mmr.

Oh, OK. How can I see it or calculate it?

:)

MMR should be published, it would remove a lot of frustration with the system to know that at least your MMR is going up even if you lose promos 3 or 4 times in a row.

we got rank shaming, dont need MMR shaming

Good question. And I think that the actual answer wouldn't be nice, looking at how often weird matchmakings happen...

Honestly the conspiracy theories sound more reasonable everyday. All big developers have psychologists who try and figure out ways to retain players for as long as possible, make players spend more money, etc. Riot for sure has shit like this, they're one of the biggest devs in the world.

What makes a league player continue playing during a season? Not reaching the goal they have for their rank. Riot has a real incentive to tip the scales against players who are close to reaching a major ranked milestone because afterwards they'll be a lot less likely to keep playing.

My anecdote is that my experience with MM has gotten pretty weird in the past 2 seasons. I've always had long win/loss streaks but now they're freakishly long. I've had several 20+ game streaks of wins or losses both this season and last. In the previous season I had two 20+ loss streaks occur at plat 5 and I was DEMOTED to gold 5 TWICE, both times getting re promoted to plat. The most recent loss streak was gold 1 80lp to gold 5. It's not because I get tilted, I can't play 20+ games a day. I've seen people making similar observations so maybe it's not just me.

They must have some Data that shows that people do not like the Elo System. Division System is more forgiving and does not feel as bad.
