In case you dont realize, an ally with baron buff needs to be with the minions for them to be buffed.. 3 baron waves obviously better than one.
And you wonder why you throw even with baron buff...

It really depends on your team comp. If you have a strong split pusher, then having them in a side lane while the other 4 push the far lane is a great setup. If they send more than 1 person to stop the split push, you go all in on the other lane. If the other team sends 5 vs your 4, you just kite back and give the split enough time to break their base.
That's not always true:
Sometimes it's better to group up to keep team morale together. People that get caught out can throw the whole team on tilt. Doing so can sometimes lose any sense of unity your team has.
If the enemy is stronger than you, it may be more effective to push a single tower as a team. If the enemy top laner can destroy your top laner in a 1v1, then split pushing probably isn't going to be very effective unless you have teleport advantage.
If your team has poor vision control, then split pushing won't be as effective. Some teams just don't know how to ward properly making it impossible to push lanes out safely. In these cases, it's probably best to simply group up instead of trying to educate people at the last second.
Sometimes it's easier to be a team leader and make calls while the team is grouped. It can make rotations safer and easier if done right. And if the enemy team isn't grouped up, you could find yourself in an advantageous position.
no some team comps need to group, if you have a good siege then you better group and take the lanes 1 by 1, you have a trynd top and udyr top, get that 1 3 1 and end that game in half the time, have a maokai top and mumu jungle? fight and take tower. Every team comp is different so learn yours then come back and say something.
