My worst experience in league is still from when I was lvl 7ish

Valhalla Rising··211 votes·7,296 views

Long story short, I fell in love with Aram as soon as I tried it shortly after the bot grind in early season 4.

I barely had any experience queuing alone vs real players, and because I didn't know what most of the champs I got did I didn't care about trading but after a few unsuccessful attempts I decided I want a strong champ that I could manage, then I got twitch.

I was really happy but someone said something like "yo I'm a beast with twitch let me have him", to which I replied, "Sry I'm new and need a strong champ to do good".

Then they said some really awful things. Things that today I have seen literally thousands of times(regretfully some of my own words) and I've been desensitized multiple times over.

But to this day, the severity and surprise of the flame I got has left a permanent scar, and really upsets me when I think about it even to this day. It sucked the fun out of that game and really put a dent in my growing interest in league.

I guess my point is I think the solution may sound odd at first but it would definitely be easy and greatly helpful.

By revamping the tutorials to include advice on interacting with other players in the game.

Right click to basic attack, Q to pew pew, that's all fine and dandy but what a player really needs to know is how incredibly toxic his own allies can be, and how to recognize and deal with this unfathomably common problem via in-game tutorial.

Been waitin a while to get that off my chest.

Bumping for visibility. I think this is an interesting proposal and would love to see discussion on this.

Now i'm just thinking of a tutorial where you kill a tutorial bot and then it all it says, "GG REPORT TEAM IMMA FEED IF I DON'T GET A GANK IN NEXT 2 MIN" Riven "Same."

The Whamboozler29 votes

Alternate idea. Disable chat for new players. Pings work just fine and there can be an option in the menu to turn chat back on, with an immediate warning of "Chat in league is often marred by rude, toxic and angry people. Turn on at your own risk". Most new peeps learn to play the game off of sites and videos anyway. Or they could sponsor a "mentor" program, where players agree to play with and teach new people and teach them the game and in exchange get an honor ribbon or free ward skins or something minor to show that they're part of the program. Then new people could seek out people with that banner for advice even in normal games.

Just because a game is bigger doesn't mean it's better...

I left DotA around patch 6.82, so that's 5 major patches ago (just about a year now!) for League, and let me say, there are only two things keeping me here... the constant updates (every 2 weeks is a looooot better than having to wait a couple months for major changes, fun wise. balance wise, not so much...) and the community (DotA's NA servers are FLOODED with non-English speakers and people from Brazil, Russia, China, etc. I'd be fine if they pinged or spoke any English but more often than not, they don't communicate in a way I can understand. On top of this, a lot more of my friends play League than DotA, and a lot of my friends from DotA ended up switching over, too.)

S H A Y C 01 votes

just because "Droid Does" doesnt mean it "does" it better...I sampled all availible moba's before landing here...dota got my worst review. Feel free to play dota and post on dota forums about dota...maybe even find a girfriend who plays dota and have a dota cosplay wedding, but for the love of all things holy please stop talking about dota HERE...LEAGUE FORUMS = DOTA FREE ZONE*[zombie-brand-facepalm]*

Fanny Forecast3 votes

Someone else brought up DotA first, I just continued in with the convo.

DotA forums aren't a League free zone. Smite forums aren't a League or DotA free zone. All MOBAs are in constant competition for players, so both the developers and the players will look at the other ones for ideas that would be good to implement in the one they prefer.

Every single game has its upsides and downsides, and without being able to see both, you're never going to be able to make accurate judgement about how good a game actually is.

League has pleeeeeenty of flaws, but the flaws aren't big enough to shove me away like with DotA's. I'm definitely NOT okay with League's flaws, and Riot has some shit to do (and some drugs to get off of) but it's better than DotA for me.

Those aren't the same though? Both are places to eat, but they aren't comparable beyond that point.

You can't compare Lol and Black OPs, they're both games, but they play in a completely different way.

LoL and Dota are both mobas, LoL orgins even somewhat were inspired from the old Dota mod.

Now maybe LoL caters to a more casual audience then Dota, that may be a reason for a higher increase in players, but LoLs to INSANELY high compared to Dotas, like massively bigger. (It's active players a month are 12x that of Dotas)

MENTOR IDEA YES. If I didn't have a friend explain stuff to me I probably never would have continued playing due to toxicity and not understanding. Rito needs to work on its new player program big time. A mentor program is genius. Especially to help people learn how to adc.Braum Bard Sona Soraka Lulu mentor support program needs to happen

The Whamboozler3 votes

All it would need is volunteers, really. The new player experience is trash and Riot seems more concerned with E-sports and messing around with Dynamic Queue and the monthly nerf/buff cycle to address it. Low level pvp is full of smurfs and ragers (often one and the same) who make learning the game awful and who drive a LOT of new people who might get into the game away from it. I know I've had two friends try the game until their first few pvp matches then put it down and never come back. People smurf for easy wins or whatnot but then flame their team for not knowing the game as well as they do. Add in that smurfs are from wide-ranges of ranks and you get a place MORE toxic than normal draft... since that salty bronze smurf is getting stomped by a plat smurf and in a REALLY bad mood.

Maybe we should work something up as a community to help with the problem?

Brightful3 votes

we could pretty much make a mentor thing ourselves. isn't there a way to advertise groups or something? anyone who knows a lot about league could volunteer, then get in a game with a cool amount of people who are just starting. you know, a few on the enemy team, few on the same side with at least one person who could teach them on each team.

TyroneWatermelon1 votes

Ok genius, let me explain what I meant; The art of not giving a shit is a complex one,it requires finding your inner depth and control your feelings, where I'm sure OP is not a 8 years old kid,I assume he knows what the Internet community is,while he can't do anything about their toxicity,he can help himself to stay pure and non infected, either muting them,or take practically the objection the player complains about, and transfer it into the "you don't even exist" area, ignoring them and even laughing at their rage. Adviced to also report them after the game, but I'm too lazy to personally do it.

Terchio5 votes

They've defended it time and again, and they're technically not wrong. While it is not advisable to build thornmail as Ashe in a real game, the skill level of the players that are actually helped by such a tutorial will generally allow them to complete the tutorial despite non-skilled play. It is not meant to be a true test of skill, basically just show the ropes, and far more basic ropes than item synergy.

As a former DotA 1 player, and longtime RTS game player with similar mechanics, I didn't need a tutorial, and knew right from wrong. However, I was highly interested in the introduction tutorials for players, mentored a few, and played the tutorials more than many players. Generally, though, I actually never noticed that Ashe was required to build that until forums brought it up years later. It is simply not a truly memorable lesson that impacts new summoner play. Heck, they won't even be able to flash for another 7 levels, and even that has dropped from the old days.

You see, this tutorial had a more basic point than "Thornmail is good on Ashe". Rather, the point was "Ashe is terrible without any items; watch when she gets an item". However, if she gets IE and then focuses tower alone, or can't figure out focusing, or gets slapped and runs toward enemy minions/tower, suddenly the tutorial is too difficult, and not actually teaching as much as taunting the player.

And for anyone looking at this and thinking, "that's too basic", yeah, it would surely seem so. However, completely new players to the genre as a whole don't understand these mechanics. Some have never played as a controllable character. Those that have may not have played one that could exit your screen for any time at all (maybe you can't get your character off center in tutorial? I forget). Those that have played that may not have played where you show your character where to go as opposed to "turn, then run forward" type commands (think Zelda games... or just about anything on a gaming platform, actually). This tutorial is for those players, not for making a true LoL guide.

No, no, it's like this: Ashe is guaranteed to be killed by ad melee characters walking up to her and two-shotting her, so what you want to do is build the thornmail so that those melee tanks who have some lifesteal will take a little bit of damage every time they hit ashe, meaning that oh wait. hang on I gotta figure this out again.

T RexHasTinyArms10 votes

Tutorial would just teach you to mute players and report them instead of raging back. Sounds like a lesson that would be useful imo.

Takatsuki Yayoi5 votes

I think that something a lot of people are forgetting is that even if someone has very thick skin when it comes to being insulted and stuff like that, it's going to be really off-putting to go into your first bots match with other players and get screamed at for not knowing how to build or not knowing what skills do, which happens quite a lot. I think maybe we should put less emphasis on people getting thicker skin, and maybe put a bit more on just being nice to players who are still learning the basics.

There is actually a tutorial for this on the player support website. How to respond/ignore toxic players. identify reportable behavior both in gameplay and chat etc.

TiiGz4 votes

That's a pretty interesting proposal. I think it's a great idea. I'd love to see tutorials not just on how to handle toxic players like muting and reporting, but also a tutorial on encouraging good game play, how to ping correctly on the minimap, and ways to promote team communication/coordination.

BigPooStorm3 votes

Worst experience was my first 2 games. It took me 3 tries before I started to like the game. I just got rofl stomped by smurfs and it wasn't fun at all. I had no clue what I was doing, and should have been matched with people who were the same. But I got people who just poked the crap out of me in lane and destroyed me b/c I had no clue what I was doing.

That's why they should just sell level 30 accounts already, with the requirement that you link it to another level 30 account. It's literally a win win for everyone. Riot makes money, people don't have to do the level 1-30 grind, which is awful, and true noobs play with true noobs.

Meeks0111 votes

It had bot games that paused and told you what to do and what goals to shoot for, as well as helping practice last-hitting and the like.

League's Tutorial told me to buy Thornmail on Ashe. Pretty good advice, but not enough of it.

My worst experience in league was shortly after rumble came out. I saw potential in him as a roaming support early on, so that's what I did. I'd let people know that was my plan. It's important to understand, this was in the day and age when if you locked Alistair or blitzcrank, you were expected to roam.

So 3 minutes into the game, I did my first roam mid, ran into the jungler and the enemy mid, killed one, then died to mid. Immediately our mid started to flame me, then both him and his friend, our jungler, went afk.

Not being cowards, me and the other two players decided to stick with the game, and try our best to win it. At the end of the game, I was something like 48/2/10.

The other team were bros though. There's nothing quite like having 4 people on the enemy team go "rumble, if this was a 4v5, you would have won..."

Seeing how much of a flaming sh*tfest low level these days is, it feels pretty good having started in season 1 where no one in low level knew a damn about meta. Full tank Mordekaiser ftw!

Ev0lutionz2 votes

The sad thing is - i totally get it...well to some extent at least. For me it's the same with summoners rift, getting myself to Soloqueue for SR is really hard. Doesnt matter if it's ranked or draft, because if i suck and people flame me, i have to listen to it for about 45 minutes and it makes me feel bad. Or i mute them, but then i still know they hate me, but i just cant see it. (In which case it still makes me feel bad, lol) That genuinly bothers me, which is why i have resorted to only playing ARAM and 3vs3 with two friends. In ARAM i just dont really care, it's a silly little game mode in which i just wanna have fun and i really dont care if people flame me, but for some reason in SR it really really bothers me.

I wanna get back into Soloqueuing which is why i am playing a lowlevel sub atm (to get back into the game - i took a LONG break, and to get used to playing with randoms again, because i do really want to start playing ranked SR again)

Anyways, by saying this i am being a hypocrit, just try not tolet it get to you. They're just random strangers on the internet, if they flame you over such little things they are not worth your time. Just mute them, move on and enjoy your game. I'm gonna try to do the same!

Best of luck to you! :)

Maybe I´m too old for this or something but I dont really get why everyone is so startled and upset about random people having a negative opinion about something you shouldn't be good at in the first place. I mean, you are a new player. You know you still need to learn loads of stuff but you don't have the self -knowledge to just tell yourself that the flames dont matter, because you dont even know them. I´m not trying to justify the flamers but I think you´d be better of just shrugging it off and anjoy the game instead of going all sensitive about what random people say.

I also want to say that I´m not a flamer whatsoever, but sometimes when you adress something in the most positive way possible to someone, it still gets recieved as a: 'omg this remark is actually factual and helps me learn if I just accept it but this positive criticism is still criticism so I'll just get mad and act like a 2 year old'.

Nowadays even a small puff of air in the wrong direction can burst someones safe-space-bubble.

Just my two cents.

best thing to do is keep quiet about it and report them yourself after the game, since the amount of reports per game doesn't matter, but the amount of games they get reported in
