How do you farm effectively as a mana champ in mid?

So I've been playing the game for over 2 years, and I've played every role EXCEPT for mid at least semi-seriously at some point, but now that I'm trying to learn how to mid, should I ever end up having to play it in draft modes, I'm having trouble trying to farm in mid, especially with mana champs.

Since they mostly scale on AP, last hitting gets hard with auto attacks whenever you have a large minion wave pushing with you, but whenever I try farming with abilities, I end up getting rolled all over by champs like Yasuo and Zed because I end up lacking mana to fight them, most champs can only combo once or twice before running low on mana. I've even tried using abilities on big minions to make sure I get them, and then trying to only use them when 2 minions are about to go or when there's a big wave with me and I STILL end the game with a garbage cs score.

I FEEL like I must be missing something, since I was able to farm effectively as top and ADC

With a dorans ring and proper CSing most mana champions can use their standard farming ability (generally Q) once per minion wave without running out of mana.

Try last hitting with your autos and saving that single spell cast in emergency situations where you think you will miss a creep, or to push the wave in on your opponent and make their CSing more difficult.

Just remember that dorans return extra mana when you properly last hit. 2 Dorans rings will provide more mana regen than a full morellonomicon until you hit level 9, so don't be afraid to grab an extra one!

And ask yourself, why would you want to waste mana on a skill that you haven't put ability points into? Until you hit level 9, you're going to have a single skill leveled up while the rest have a single point in them and do puny damage for the mana they cost. Just wait on the cooldown and use your primary skill again if necessary :)

I see your complaint thread, and raise you logic.

Just practice. Last hitting and managing mana aren't that hard.

EDIT: is it 'aren't' or 'isn't'? They both sound weird to me in my head.

I don't really have that particular problem in mid, just farm. Last hitting doesn't really change between mana champ or not. I think it would be extremely similar to mana Ap top laners.

It just takes practice. For the most part, especially in the early game, you want to CS mostly with auto attacks - maybe use an ability once every other wave to secure a minion you couldn't have got with AA's because of timing or whatever. But most champs can't afford to spam their abilities to get CS, you'll run out of mana very quickly and you give a lot of windows of opportunity for your opponent to harass you.

So yeah, pretty much it just comes down to practice.

Take the butcher/feast masteries, the arcane blade mastery also helps, something that some pro mid laners will do is to also take 2 points in fury to help with the issues caused by low attack speed on some mid mages.
