Yeah your first 4 items should be Mercury Treads, BotRK, TriForce, Randuin's, and then more tanky items depending on their team. Banshee's Veil if they have lots of magic damage, Frozen Heart or Thornmail if they have lots of AD. Then of course Guardian Angel is always good as a 5th or 6th item.
Whether you get BotRK first or TriForce first depends on how you're doing in lane. If you're struggling and really need the lifesteal to say alive, get BotRK first. If you're doing well or even winning, just get Triforce first. You typically want to build Sheen first when you go for TriForce, because its passive is really strong when trading in lane.
Hextech Gunblde isn't a bad item, but I wouldn't recommend rushing it. Get it 3rd or 4th, but only if you're really ahead and need the extra damage to carry your team.
You can literally get whatever you want on jax
Hextech Gunblade isn't recommended not because it's a bad item but because it is so expensive. The bang isn't worth the buck. The only times you're buying this item is when you're extremely far ahead.
How I play Jax is dependent upon how I am doing and who I am facing. If I have an extremely hard lane that I don't think I am supposed to win I want crystaline flask. If I have a lane where I can bully out my opponent I take doran's blade. If I am facing a very mobile enemy or one with skill shots I take boots and hp pots. Yellow trinket always.
If I am doing very well upon my first back my first item is Sheen (triforce is my aim for first item here). If I am going even I usually get a long sword (bilgewater cutlass is my goal item here). If I am losing I get boots. If I am losing badly I get a full pack of wards. Also, every time you back BUY A WARD. Jax is one of only 3 champions in the game who can ward jump. Abuse it.
Usually I get merc treads shortly after Sheen or Bilgewater cutlass. Ninja tabi is also an option depending upon lane opponent and enemy team's composition. If you are facing off against Tryndamere or Renekton Ninja tabi is recommended here. Sometimes I build merc treads if the enemy mid laner is snowballing and I can afford to neglect my lane for a bit and pay that enemy mid laner a visit.
Randuin's Omen, Banshee's veil, Maw of Malmortis, Frozen mallet, and Guardian Angel were my usual tank items. Take your pick on what you like. Righteous Glory gets an honorable mention too. Frozen Heart and Iceborn gauntlet are atypical items to build too but you can add them onto your item set as well.
BOTRK is probably just better than Gunblade since it gives you Attack Speed which scales very well on Jax. Crystalline Flask is great on him, lets you stay in lane long enough to get significant upgrades each time you back. Against magic damage ranged pokers like Nidalee who isnt worth fighting unless you can kill her because of her sustain, or Ryze if you fall behind him, its not a bad idea to get a Spirit Visage which will give you a good chunk of HP and MR plus heal you with its passive whenever you get poked. A Dorans Shield is also great, absorbing some damage from autos and single target abilities plus giving you HP regen. With a Vamp Scepter you should have enough AD to last hit while having the sustain to stay in lane and get the items you will need to fight and kill them. I usually finish my Cutlass first, if one of your teammates comes to gank your opponent you will definitely be able to kill them with the Cutlass slow and your E along with your teammate's assistance. Hell, if you have 6 stacks on your passive from hitting minions and your opponent walks up to you, you could probably just kill them yourself. Phage is probably the best part of the Triforce to build first. I used to build Sheen first at all times, which is a good item but Id much rather have the Phage since it gives you the ability to stick to people and get off a few more autos with the health to withstand their retalilation plus some AD so you can hit harder and lifesteal more.
