Like, I can be 11/1/15, carrying like crazy and people will get all bent out of shape if I buy a second Zhonyas on Fiddles. Like, my bad that their ad carry is the only person on the team with more than 3 kills and none of them are building mag resist. I carried you to victory, just shut up and let me do it please :D.
Zhonya's is still gold efficient even without the active and I wouldn't fault you for buying two of them, but it is rarely the best option in any situation.
I would probably have recommended using that 3000 gold to purchase a Void Staff and a Chain Vest (which could later be built into Randuin's Omen). You get slightly less AP, but you have the same armor and 35% magic penetration. This would probably have scaled better later in the game and prevent them from building magic resistance against you.
Fear of the unknown is what makes us human, but when people break the meta, they get angry because they dont understand.

The biggest problem is that alot of people think there is a "right way" and a "wrong way" to build for every situation. I Played AP Xin for a long while because it was fun to spam dashes that allowed me to two shot the carries and tear through tanks building armor. Got alot of flack for it because it is not, technically, the "best" way to build xin. The people who whine the most are usually not pleasant to begin with though.
Mundo does what he pleases... you're not mundo
As a general rule you do not build items that have useless stats for your champion no matter how good they are.
For example, you would not build Frozen Heart on Riven, even though the 100 armor, 20% CDR, and attack speed slowing aura are great stats, the 400 mana is completely useless. Therefore 1/4 of the item is useless to you and not worth the amount of gold it takes. Randuins Omen is a better choice.
Building 2 Zhonya's leaves you with a completely useless stat. It's a waste of gold because it's not worth the 3k you paid to build it. If you need armor THAT badly, build a Guardian Angel or a Thornmail honestly.
That being said, if you are Fiddlesticks and their ADC is killing you, just fear her and kill her instead. If you are carrying it is up to you to deal with the enemy teams carry. Do not engage unless you can kill them first, or at least incapacitate them during the fight.
