I've never once called a homosexual individual a faggot. Rather, the only people I refer to as faggots are those people that can also be described as douchebags. With that said, I'm not gay and I don't know what kind of emotional toll words like this have on the homosexual community so I try to avoid it as much as possible.
Now regarding your joke, a business major who has no intentions of pursing an MBA or other higher degree should be made fun of, otherwise it has the potential to open the door to a lot of lucrative job opportunities. And since I'm sure you're wondering, I'm a psychology major myself so there is no bias in regards to my views on the degree.
