But why is everyone bitching about rito and these chromopack things? First off, I have no clue what they actually are. I think they are like a recolor of champs? I just don't get what all the bitching is for just because they cost money. If you are that bent outta shape that they cost money, just don't fuking buy them? If you can't live without having a blue champ...then buy it. Simple.

Its cause people think they are entitled to more from a game that does not charge them money.

I personally think they are at a reasonable price point but a conversation about actual cost would be legit. But any conversation about how they should be free is just funny.

I'll play devils advocate on this one. But I think the "bitching" is because the community feels that Riot could have spent their resources that were used to make these "chromapack" things on ACTUAL new skins...or reworks...CoughpoppyCough.

Yes, these recolors are just a mere photoshop job that doesn't take too much, but whatever time they are spending making new recolors for EACH champ, they could have had that "team" designing a new skin for champs that have VERY little skins....Like:

Aatrox Braum Jinx Kha'Zix Lucian Quinn VelKoz Yasuo Zac

Yes, riot will get some money from people wanting a red fizz or a blue garen or whatever. But I think they would have yielded more money making new skins for any of the above champs or put more effort into the reworks that are supposed to be coming for:

Olaf Eve Poppy etc....

There are two reasons the chromas don't sit well with me.

  • Forced bundling is at its core a manipulative practice. The fact it's impossible to purchase chromas separately means that if I want a specific recolor for something I have to pay extra for content I don't want.
  • The reasoning given for pricing on the FAQ is essentially "we did it this way five years ago, so we'll do it today". We have no background on the amount of work it requires from Riot's end, and the fact it requires paying 590 RP on top of a skin that might be 975 just to get it in the color you want seems a bit weird.

I'm fine with Riot charging RP for this content, but it would be valuable for us to have some dialogue with them regarding bundling and pricing.

The vocal majority are "bitching" because chromapacks literally take 10 minutes to make with 1 person alone. There is a guy on reddit who has a done a crap ton for other people for FREE and he's covered a decent amount of the champs in a few days. What we don't like is the fact that RIOT is slapping a price tag on something that requires the bare minimum in terms of effort.

Skins require effort, they show skill and talent of the people who make them and if they want to charge me $10 for it then so be it. But you can't just sit there and swipe over it with the brush tool two times then tell me you want me to pay for that. The LEAST they could do it have an IP purchase option.

Well I can confirm your first suspicion, you do, in fact, have no idea what you are talking about.

I am an illustrator, modeler, and texture artist and recolors (what these actually are no matter how much they want to rebrand them) such as what we have seen so far do not take even 1/10th of the work of creating a 750 RP skin, yet they are going to cost well over half of that at 540 RP, and Riot is trying to hide that gross overpricing by packaging them in threes and claiming it is 'more bang for your buck', even when they know full well most people are only going to be interested in one of the three of each pack.

And at the end of the day, if Riot had no problem creating two higher price tiers, and then chucking several extremely dated existing skins in to that new price range without any additional work on them, they should have no problem doing the same for a lower price tier.

I usually see complaints of 'too much' not 'they should be free', centered largely around this post showing how 'easy' it is to do a rushed job of a re-color.

All that being said I personally agree with you, not to mention there's a chance for chromas to be offered for alternative pricing like IP, games with a certain skin, etc etc.

I'm kinda neutral to the Chroma Packs.

At one point, they take very minimum time, skill, and just one employee of Riot to make the Chromas. It makes skins less valuable and they're obviously doing it for quick and easy money.

From another it could make games and customization more interesting. Since Chroma Packs are far cheaper they will also be more common than skins if you're just talking about a classic model and a chroma without a skin.

Because it takes a professional roughly 30 minutes to make a single chroma. At three chromas in a pack, a single person has worked for about 2 hours rounded up. Even if you were paying them $100 an hour for whatever reason, you'd only need to sell 40 chroma packs at $5 a pack (current price, mind you) to make up for what he/she was "worth."

That being said, people aren't paid $100 an hour, and they'll sell millions of chromapacks, not 40.

Its dishonesty saying its value reflects the amount of time/money that went into it, because that's simply untrue, and its a scam because as said above, after they sell 40 of the packs that Mr.100-A-Hour-Rent-An-Artist worked on, everything after that point is pure profit-- after release, there is zero re-production cost, as its a digital good. After its made, there is a theoretical infinite number of the product, they will always have product equal to demand so long as they choose to do so, at zero cost.

Then there is the secondary complaint, which is also fairly reasonable: Why, after I spent $5-20 on a skin, to I have to throw another $5 at the skin to get a skin for my skin?

Garurumon4/16/2015, 1:20:13 PM2 votes

+1 on all.

Not to mention that 590RP is nothing, and an hour of work will give me more than enough to buy several packs.

Dunkrius2g4/16/2015, 3:44:21 PM1 votes

Not a fan of buying things. Only bought a 975 skin on 50% discount. That's all my purchases so far for rito. Chroma's won't matter for me. If it is achievable, then that will be awesome if not...
