[PSA: Peeling] What is peeling, and how do you do it?
I had a game last night where my duo partner, who was the ADC, kept dying very fast in team fights and kept asking our top/support to peel for him. I was playing Ekko jungle, so I was constantly diving back line to handle the ADC, top and Support at the same time while my other 4 teammates could deal with the mid laner and Warwick. The Sion and Thresh both said they knew what peeling was, but when it would come to fights, they wouldn't do anything to try and keep the Warwick and top off the carries. So this led me to believe that people don't understand what peeling is, so I'll say it in an analogy. Peeling for a carry is like peeling a banana; the banana is the most important part. The skin, or peel, is what protects the banana from the elements and from spoiling or dying. If you play anything that isn't a carry, you will need to peel for them. Now that you have the image in your head, what can you do to peel? Let move on.
Let's say you're on Nautilus, and you just hit a Q (big hook for those who don't know, Dredge Line) onto an enemy support, you run through your skills and E to slow him, auto attack him to root him for a second then out of nowhere Zed shows up through the wall. At this point, you need to stop trying to kill that support and get that Zed immediately. There's 2 things you should know by this, 1.) he's probably going to ult your ADC and 2.) If you can get him off your ADC fast enough, he has no escape for another 12 seconds without burning flash. The sooner you get the Zed off, the better chance you have of surviving (obviously). When you're playing a role that needs to peel for a carry, you need to be able to focus on what is priority and what is not. Although the Support was a free kill, the Zed is potentially 2 deaths and 2 assist to the support rather than you getting 1 kill or assist. Peeling is when I would notice the Zed, ult him, E him, auto him, then Q again once he has been so crowd controlled he is either forced to fight and die or flee to keep his life. At this point, the support may have turned around thinking the Zed would get the kills and once Zed has been so crowd controlled and dies, and you get the kill on the support anyways.
Peeling is literally peeling the damage dealers off of your carries so that they can actually deal damage in a team fight and have a higher chance of carrying. Look at any good ADC who has carried, and then look at their support, I can guarantee they peeled for their ADC to soak damage and crowd control so their role could be the carry it's supposed to be.
