Talking to an imaginary audience can help you improve
Imagine you are one of the best players in the world, and you're doing an educational stream. You have 100 thousand people watching to learn from your greatness.
Explain everything you do and why you're doing it.
Every 30 seconds or minute you should be saying, out loud or in your head, "I am doing X, because Y."
The reason you are doing this is to make sure you're always doing something useful. Some people, especially in lower elo, tend move around while waiting for something to happen. If you can't come up for a reason to do what you're doing, that means you're not doing something useful.
Common examples:
- "I am freezing the wave right now because it allows me to zone Nasus"
- "I am roaming because I think that I can get a kill bot."
- "I am saving my stun for Katarina so that I can interrupt her ult"
Ways to take it a step further:
- "I am doing X because Y. I could be doing Z, but X is better because W"
- "I died there because X. I should have done Y."
- "That went well/badly because X. I did Y well, but I need to work on Z."
Advanced examples:
- I am farming the sidewave because it gets me more gold and it'll make the wave push the other way. I could be with my team, but we can't siege and dragon spawns in 3 minutes.
- I died there because I used my flash too aggressively. I should have saved my flash until the enemy team burned all their CC.
- That trade went in my favor. I won because I was weaving my autoattacks, but I should've probably gone for the kill.
Using this method has helped me improve significantly. Talking to an imaginary audience makes sure that you're always doing something useful.
If you want a good example, I'd recommend watching some of Xpecial's streams. The reason he's considered one of the best supports in NA if not the world is because he analyzes his plays in this way. Every time he dies, he goes through a breakdown of what happened and what he can do better.
This method won't fix all of your mistakes, but it will help you use your time in the game more efficiently.
