(W.I.P.)Champion concept: (I suck at names, feel free to suggest one), the mana leech

...(stands for name in progress) is a mid/support focused mage that has resources but doesn´t directly consume it for his abilities.

Basic info: attack range: 600 resource: mana (kinda) Roles: Mage/Support

Abilities:

Passive: Mana manipulation ... has a maximun capacity for mana of 200/300/400/500 at levels 1/6/11/16 but does not naturally regenerate it nor consume it with his standard abilities. However when he hits full mana he shifts into a "Sated" form in which he consumes mana to use altered abilities for as long as he has mana.

Uses: This passive has no use by itself and is used purely to alter his other abilities.

Q: Arcane Virus(non sated)/spell disruption(sated)

Arcane Virus: You launch a straight line skillshot (width of 125) that stops at the first champion hit and attaches 1 stack of "Arcane infection" for 8/9/10/11/12 seconds. this effect causes a very slow drain of mana or energy and halves any resource restoring effects on that target (drain stacks, restoration reduction does not stack). Mana drain: 5/10/15/20/25 per second (Max. 5 stacks Cooldown: 8 seconds at all ranks

Uses: this ability is primarily used for leeching the opposing laners mana or disabling mana Reliant champions later in the game and can completely disable your lane opponent if you can keep up the stacks.

Kassadin had a mana leaching ability on his W early on but it was quickly removed because it was a very aggrevating mechanic to play against.

The main issue with the mana drain here aside from being a mana drain is that since it works on energy while lowering energy restoration effects. This is a problem because energy users don't have a large pool so for example, use this on shen before his e hits and he can't do very much due to the high cost on shadow dash. If you want to give him a mana drain then maybe change the interaction with energy. The passive seems pretty cool though.

The MYMU plans to make mana an actual resource you have to manage, not merely something that prevents you from spamming until you build an Athene's and then you get to forget you even have a mana bar. So introducing this kind of champ would be a double whammy against mages; they'd be screwed if they had to lane against someone that steals their mana.

And then there's all the issues Riot had with mana burn effects way back when: It hard countered part of the roster while being absolutely powerless against others and is insanely unfun to play against (ever seen a Karthus forced to auto attack? It's pathetic).

You're better off just using silence since it achieves the same end goal (no more spells) in a more healthy way.

I can't remember exactly where it was said, but I can paraphrase a rioter's explanation for why mana drain is bad for game health:

If you are against somebody who isn't bothered by mana drain (other/no resource), then you feel terrible and they feel neutral about it. If you are against somebody that your mana drain is very effective against, then they feel terrible and you feel slightly happy that you're able to do your stuff successfully.

Mana drain mechanics, while possible to balance, introduce much more frustration than they could ever hope to mitigate with counterplay/balance.

I'd highly encourage you to use creative energy on a different and healthier basis for a champion - for instance, what if there was a champ who gave enemy champions shields, but could steal those shields if he uses his abilities successfully?
