Zilean Rework idea-- Pure Support

First and foremost, his lore doesn't work for a playable character. He is, and I quote, "unable to impact the events which unfold." You shouldn't be able to play him if that's the case. Needs to be adjusted. Second, and second most important, let it be noted that his bombs have no relation to his lore, even the first two iterations. They'd need to be included and he'd need to be given additional damaging abilities to be a coherent character based around the bombs.

But that's not the direction I hope they go. I think his concept as a time manipulator would work best as a lower damage, higher utility support. Healing allies by reversing time on their wounds, similar to what his ulimate already does.

I will go over my suggested changes as well as an explanation for the magnitude and theme of the change.

Passive -- Oversight Starting after 6 minutes in, Zilean can click his map to lift the fog of war for two seconds. Zilean's allies do not share this vision. Cooldown 160--120--90, reducing at levels 6 and 11. As it is, the ability to share experience with an ally just doesn't have an impact. If it were powerful enough to actually effect the lane phase, then he'd be picked far more, especially in professional play. But very few champions benefit from a level up eight minutes into the game, when they're already near the next level and everyone besides Zilean himself is already level 6. While it does fit the idea that he has more experience than everyone else and is able to capture moments to teach others, I feel like the ability to see all locations on the map as if he had chosen to walk there in the present moment works just as well.

Q -- Reversal Zilean marks a champion for 4 seconds. Any damage a marked ally takes within that time frame is converted into grey health, and they heal for 20% to 50% (with an AP scaling) of the amount over the next 4 seconds (Allies also marked with Chronoshift heal additionally for all remaining grey health when they're revived). Marked enemies take magic damage at the end of the duration equal to one of his current bomb's plus the total of all healing they received during the duration. As I mentioned, the bombs don't really fit into his theme at all. And having only one difficult-to-use-even-with-practice damaging ability doesn't make for a coherent champion. I figured the idea of giving him an actual sustaining heal as a time-reversal of damage would fit well, and coincide with keeping his ultimate the same. Similarly, if he can undo damage I think he should also be able to undo healing.

W -- Particle Deceleration [Ground-target circle] Zilean halts the motion of all air in an area for 2 seconds, silencing all enemies within it. (blind, not nearsight) Firstly, I think having his Q/E cooldowns and Q's stun set in such a way that he actually needs to reduce them by 10 seconds to even be useful is frankly ridiculous. The gimmick that it "rewinds" his cooldowns isn't enough to validate weakening his other abilities below a normal level of usefulness. When thinking about an ability fitting for a character with limited control over time, it occurred to me that he doesn't have to directly effect enemies to apply crowd control. And a zone that provides a silence would work well with keeping his E nearly the same.

E -- Time Warp Essentially the same, but without the ridiculously long Rewind-reliant cooldown. Perhaps 8 seconds at all ranks instead of the current 15.
This ability fits the theme and would work well with my suggestion for his W. The only issue is the high cooldown.

R -- Chronoshift Also essentially the same, but I'd like to add a 0.5s or 1s stunning explosion to the revival of the ally. Sort of like a terminator-style bubble, giving the ally a moment to get their bearings after a teamfight revival instead of being immediately re-killed.

I like all of these ideas except the W. Giving a blind as an AOE in a lane for that period of time is rather intense honestly, theres a good reason why Graves blind AOE is so small and why its slow is so small. Blind AOEs are just generally suuuuper powerful, especially in the right hands. I feel like having something along the lines of Viktors AOE is more appropriate, the longer they stay in the AOE the slower they become. Maybe starting at 30% in the beginning and ramping up to 80-90% by 2 seconds, basically forcing them into a halt for .5 seconds. Would pair amazingly well for teamfights and laning phase alike. Especially for characters like Miss Fortune, Lucian, etc.

The W is a bit odd, as previously stated. I like the idea of slowing light, scientifically. What if instead, allies in the zone are stealthed (like iverns brush) and enemies are near sighted (light can't escape to see) It can allow for outplay and potentially be a good counter measure to all ins

Awesome i really like this. What do you think the aoe would be for W? Because it seems like it should be something around ~375 in order to be balanced i guess.

I really like the concept of a grey health heal ability. The utility on w is very neat but thematically wouldnt it suppress and blind anything in the aoe? picking at straws lol its actually a solid ability. His unchanged e is alright. The ult change is alright assuming the stun occurs at the moment of respawn, giving enemies the stasis window to avoid it, also i dont really see it being much help against ranged enemies since you couldnt really make the aoe very large without it being op.

Overall I like that he'd become more of an enchanter but at the same time I worry that he's severely lacking in damage ability. He'd have no wave clear, his single target dps would be reduced by half more often than not and his multitarget dps would be nonexistent.

Zilean needs an update... Or at least a model update.

Also, I feel like he fits the pulse fire theme better than anyone.

Cool concept, I agree with a lot of what you said and was able to understand most of your reasoning for the changes. I just have a couple of issues/suggestions.

  1. Passive - Interesting idea, but isn't it essentially a passive blue trinket. It loosely makes sense with his theme/lore, but why not just get a blue trinket, I mean its free. I definitely agree that his current passive is lackluster with little to no actual impact on the game, but personally feel that there are way more useful/interesting ideas you could have come up with. ie. found someway to make Time Warp the passive or made it so he can see into the future to dodge the next enemy ability that hits him (with some balanced cooldown)

  2. Ability Q - I really like the first part of this ability (the healing), but the second part of this ability (the damage) could get really yucky math/coding wise and could honestly be separated into two different abilities since you said it yourself that Riot generally dislikes abilities that can affect both enemies and allies. If you wanted to keep a damaging portion of this ability maybe have some type of delayed increased damage. For example, a marked enemy will take no damage for the next x seconds after which they will take all the damage they would have received plus some additional percentage of that damage as magic damage.

  3. Ability W - This is probably my least favorite ability in this rework as it feels like it does just a little too much while also being somewhat stale. I definitely agree with your opinion on how the current Q/E combo is pretty gimmicky; however, I do not feel that the stun resulting from the double bombs was too far off target. Instead of a silence+blind or stun, I think a stasis effect would make much for sense for a champion like Zilean. So, what I would like to see is instead something similar to a Viktor W, but instead of a stun after not escaping the AOE the enemy is instead put into stasis for a short duration (shorter than bard ult)

  4. Ability E - Nothing to talk about since I think we both can agree that this is a neat ability that works perfectly with Zileans theme/lore, but if we could somehow move this to his passive and then use the first part of your Q idea for the Q and move my idea for a possible second part of his Q to the E we would have one hell of a champ in my eyes.

  5. Ability R - This ability is already powerful enough that you definitely do not need to give it an AOE stun since it is essentially a 30-second guardian angel and in my opinion, the champ that is getting revived can jump right off (trying not to swear). I killed you once and now I got to kill you again at what is probably full health all while your team is attacking me, it essentially becomes a 6v5, so no way in hell are you getting an AOE stun to protect yourself. Sorry for the rant there, Zilean just tilts me hard and his ultimate really annoys me since it is pretty much a constant get out of jail free card in the late game. Had to play a game where it was Aatrox, Lucian, Zilean, Ekko, Kindred and as you can probably guess, I lost full as any reasonable human being would in that situation.

Let me know what you think of my suggested changes and if you disagree or think I misunderstood anything, let me know why and what.
