590 RP is not 6300 IP (Rune Page Cost inequality)

The Ecdysiast··207 votes·10,492 views

Disclaimer: This is in Gameplay because runes change in-game stats. A champion that costs 6300 IP is 975 RP. A champion that costs 1350 IP is 590 RP.

A rune page which costs only 590 RP should NOT cost 6300 IP. It's only 1350 IP worth of RP, and it doesn't give you a filled page--only a slot to put more runes on.

Edit: To anyone who thinks Rune Pages should be anything but free "at Riot's discretion." You should just hand them $5 for those mastery pages you use. It's the same principle. And remember that this is the only case in the game where something that should be free--as it affects gameplay-- has the option to be purchased with RP. Runes cannot be bought with RP, so neither should pages to use them.

Edit 2: Does anyone else share my tendency to buy a skin for a 6300 champion that you've earned with IP? Most of those skins are 975, and unless you wait for a sale that's definitely more money than they'd get for a rune page. Either I spend 6300 on the champ and buy a 975 skin because I feel like I earned it, or spend 6300 IP on a rune page and Riot gets absolutely nothing from the transaction. If they only cost 1350, I could still buy one and then go on to buy a champion+skin with little time in between.

I'm pretty sure Riot will look at your argument and say "oh, that is weird that the IP/RP ratios are different" and instead make rune pages cost 975 RP.

Inb4 6300 champions go down to 590 RP. item 3070

Riot: For the sake of consistency, we announce the following price change:

590 RP champs now cost 6300 IP. 975 RP champs now cost 8400 IP.

What happens to champions that just come out?

I don't follow your logic. They're like comparing apples and oranges.

DeathBot6661 votes

My point was that runes pages, in order to be even remotely useful, require runes, meaning that they cost more, because to riot, you spend money on rune pages and the runes, so there more valuable than champions, as tier 3 runes are expensive, so people are more likely to either spend RP on the pages and IP on runes, or IP boosts to get IP for runes.

Spicy Rice1 votes

I mean, how many pages and runes do you realistically need, especially with dynamic queue out?

Just Shimakaze2 votes

just basic ad/ap runes costed me 14490 ip without any extra rune pages, so quite a lot

AMYS GRAVE1 votes

I actively use about 12 of my rune pages.

Spicy Rice1 votes

Why? You only need be prepared to play 2 roles. Do you have 6 champs you main in both of your roles? Do you really play them enough that you need 12 dedicated rune pages?

PaladinNO4 votes

As an avid ARAM player, I'd like more than the 20 pages I currently got.

In that mode, no single champion is played just one way. By own reckoning, I need some 37 runepages to properly make do.

AMYS GRAVE1 votes

Why? You only need be prepared to play 2 roles.

I often like to play other roles as well, mid is probably the only one i don't play much/well although i am trying to improve at it.

Do you have 6 champs you main in both of your roles?

main might be a strong word because i don't consider myself to have a main in the traditional sense, but i do play the following frequently:

My support pool Alistar Braum Janna Karma Kayle Kennen Leona Lulu Morgana Nami Nautilus Poppy Shen Soraka Taric Thresh Zyra

my jungle pool Alistar Amumu Chogath Diana DrMundo Ekko Gragas JarvanIV Kindred Maokai Nautilus Pantheon Rammus Rumble Sejuani Shen Shyvana Sion Trundle Volibear Warwick MonkeyKing XinZhao Zac

my adc pool Ashe Caitlyn Corki Ezreal Graves Jinx Lucian Urgot

my top pool

Chogath DrMundo Gnar JarvanIV Kennen Malphite Maokai Nautilus Pantheon Renekton Rumble Shen Sion Trundle Vi Volibear MonkeyKing

my mid pool

Anivia Brand Lissandra MalzaharUrgot Velkoz Viktor Ziggs

I wouldn't pick all of these blindly into any matchup but would save them as counterpicks.

Do you really play them enough that you need 12 dedicated rune pages?

yes. It's not just about your champion but about the champion your opponent picks. Do i take HP/lvl seals or armor? That depends on the champion that I'm laning against, not just the champion I'm playing. If i blind pick Malz mid for instance i will take armor seals against zed, but HP/lvl against lux. That's two pages for one champ based on who I'm laning against so its not unreasonable to think i use 12 regularly. There is some overlap as i would use the same set of runes for viktor and malz for instance but i do feel adapting to the enemies pick is a good thing.

http://www.lolking.net/summoner/na/58543977#runes

looking at my lolking i use pages 1,3,7,9,11,12,13,14,17,18,19,20 all regularly

TheStevenWu1 votes

Sorry, but that's not your champion pool. Your champion pool are champions you play at an above-average level, not champions you know how to play. If you're playing at an above-average level, you wouldn't be silver 3.

Also - being silver 3 playing a large variety of champions with multiple custom pages only attests to why people shouldn't have so many champions and custom pages.

Advice if you're looking to climb: Pick 2 champions for each role and play them exclusively. Then pick 2-3 champions out of those 6 and make them your "main". Do this and you'll be Gold in no time.

AMYS GRAVE1 votes

The advice i need to climb is just to play more. I went on a streak of trolls on my team for like 10 games in a row and didn't play ranked for nearly 2 weeks. If i'd have played even half of my normal games as ranked i'd be around s1 by now. You are probably right that i don't play them all above average, but its hard to say i do or don't with some because i don't play them all in the standard meta way.

EDIT: also back on topic i'd like to have competent rune pages for normal games as i test the limits of champions

IcyPepper3 votes

because you have to spend even more money on runes for them to be useful.

You mean IP. You can't buy runes with money :V

PaladinNO6 votes

You can't play the game with runes - you need champions to do that.

"Take this rune and stick it... somewhere safe." "Only a fool plays the rune he's dealt."

"I feel like I forgot to rune something..." "Put away your worried rune!"

With regard to the recent Pokemon thread, it's like Ashe Ketchup (phuns intended) saying "pokeball, I choose you!".

MVDuneCats12 votes

So, you're saying Riot should increase the RP cost of Rune pages to 975?

da glorious10 votes

There really isn't a hard ratio for rp vs ip because you can't convert them. The ip and rp prices of champions aren't proportional at all. 1350ip is way under half of 6300ip, but 590rp is over half of 975rp. It mathematically doesn't work; unless, I'm just an idiot, and I'm missing something. Are runes too expensive? Definitely, but you can't really compare them with champion prices because they are completely different, and they aren't proportional either.

Seriously. It's 9000 minimum to fill a page, 11500 if you want any of the quints that cost 2000. Then they have the nerve to charge money or 6300 IP for a blank page to put them on.

swordishforce3 votes

The nerve? Sound pretty entitled to me. This game is free and they can choose to charge whatever they want, if you don't like it well quit.

The Ecdysiast2 votes

They claim the game is not pay-to-win and they pride themselves on that fact. Ergo, if that were true then nothing that directly effects gameplay would be available for purchase with real-world currency. That's why advantageous skins get changes. You want to go play a pay to win game, then go right ahead and play something else instead of pretending, "this game is free" and "they charge" can truthfully be in the same sentence in regards to something that changes game stats.

I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of pay to win.

You log into this game for free You can spend money on two types of things a Cosmetics that don't effect game play and are only available for purchase b Gameplay that are also available for currency earned through gameplay Everything gained through money that effects the game can be easily gotten by playing.

You don't HAVE to get more pages. You have two runes pages to start with. You can go into the normal queue with two roles picked. Change your two rune pages to suit the two roles you are about to play. A rune page costs the same as a newer champion, you can extend your roster or you can extend your page versatility.

Spicy Rice2 votes

There is a severe difference between pay to win, and pay to accelerate.

Pay to win is when they make runes available through rp only or offer skins that increases skill hit boxes.

The current system is pay to accelerate, where one can earn non cosmetic advantages, but can also pay to get them faster. While this would still be considered to be pay to win if this were a mmo , this game is not an mmo

This is a game that is highly dependent on skill and therefore that pay to accelerate becomes acceptable in the context of the game

It's not pay-to-win. Pay-to-win means you pay money to be at an advantage over others. While untrue, the assumption is that all champions are balanced and have an equal chance of winning. Therefore, using money to buy champions do not give you any real advantage and would then not fall under a pay-to-win system.

Additional rune pages are unnecessary until you become more experienced and want to make custom rune pages. Even then, those custom pages are only every so slightly different from the "generic" pages. The advantage of a custom page is so small that it is effective pushed out of any pay-to-win system. It's so small that professional/high elo players will often neglect them and go with generic pages as it is more convenient.

Runes have a significant impact on gameplay, which is why they are IP only. Rune pages do not. By the time you start needing a 3rd rune page (there are 4 roles, 3 significantly different roles), you most likely have enough to buy a rune page (2 with the occasional 2-for-1 sales). If you spent it on some random champion, that's your fault for making piss poor decisoins.

Only a total dumbass would ever believe League of Legends is "pay-to-win." Using money only helps a player open up more options for the game. However, it doesn't increase his chances of winning at all.

Additionally, just because the IP doesn't match the usual RP proportions, doesn't mean RIOT is cheating people or that prices should be changed. The rune pages are neither too cheap nor too expense - they are free. The game is free. You should be grateful that RIOT is giving you a short-cut so you can save yourself from a painful grinding experience, which is what free-to-play games are built on.

Abercrombie sells you a shirt $72. Old Navy sells a shirt $23.

Both of which were $1 when they exited the factory in Bangladesh.

They charge whatever they want as long as it still sells, make sense to you or no.

AMYS GRAVE4 votes

Different companies charging different prices for the same product Vs. The same company charging different prices for the same product

This isn't even comparable.

Llanite1 votes

You managed to miss the obvious point.

They charge the maximum amount people are willing to pay, doesn't matter if it cost them 1 cent, $1 or 1 million of fake money.

Here's a t-shirt, it costs 1USD or 10,000EUR. That's not consistent with ethical pricing practices.

There's no such thing as "ethical" pricing for unnecessary products. If it's a product that is required for living (food, utilities, rent, etc.), then you can talk to me about "ethical" pricing.

This is a FREE VIDEO GAME. "Ethical" pricing does not exist here. The only pricing that exists in a free video game is your basic supply-and-demand pricing. If it's too expensive, don't buy it and the price will come down. Otherwise, keep buying it and the price will remain constant or rise. The price is not coming down because Riot's finance team has determined that the current price is at the optimal level.

If a t-shirt is ever priced at 10,000 EUR; it is either because people are willing to buy it at that price or it's not meant for sale. There is nothing unethical about it.

charging different prices for the same product based on customers race, gender, etc... are not only unethical they are illegal regardless of the necessity of the product.

which price is at the optimal level?

3Bear4 votes

If people are willing to buy a shirt for 10,000 EUR then they should be willing to pay 11390 USD for that. Why should it be cheaper in one currency compared to another?

dunkeroni6 votes

Bro, you get a discount if you pay Riot money for the rune page. Stop complaining. They set their prices based on what people are willing to pay for things. People are willing to pay 975 RP for a champion that would otherwise cost 6300 IP, but since people are less excited about paying money for another rune page (which doesn't come with a skill kit, fancy graphics, or cool abilities) it costs less money. That said, it should still take a large amount of time invested in playing if you want to unlock it with IP (note that they don't have to offer an IP version, unlocks such as rune pages in most games can only be purchased through cash transactions).

As a side note: Having something as relatively intangible as a Rune Page prompts players who would otherwise not purchase RP to spend real money on the game (a gateway transaction in some sense). They would likely not be willing to do this if the rune page was 975 RP; they would instead just grind for the IP.

Bitch I go nuts when I can buy another rune page. I keep buying champions because I think "This guy's cool", then regret it because I need a different rune page for them.

I need more rune pages. ╰༼ •̀۝•́ ༽╯

Spicy Rice1 votes

You need more general runepages. Don't make them based on a champ, but on your particular play style. It'll allow you to use 1 page for almost every ad champ or 1 page for almost every ap champ

1011001110002 votes

The thing is, after you go through all the general pages, certain champions have better rune set-ups specifically tailored for a specific group of champion that the general pages don't adequately support.

PaladinNO5 votes

Well, to put the other way around: champions go on sale regularly, bundles included: 487 RP for a 6300 IP champion. And with the exception of the twice-a-year 2-for-1 runepage sale, runepages never go on sale.

And with the 7-page runepage bundle for 2600 RP, it's only ~371,4 RP per runepage.

Banuvan5 votes

If I could buy you a rune page or two I would but instead my IP is sitting here wasting away.

This is how you hide the fact that your free to play game enables you to buy power. Runes and rune pages might have made sense as an IP sink six years ago when there were only a handful of champs at all and only a couple of them required more than a day or two's worth of IP, but now they're held on to not out of necessity but because Riot is terrified of making any meaningful decisions that might "anger" the playerbase who has already slogged through this completely unnecessary grind.

Riot wants your money; all companies do. Thing is, Riot has pretty plainly forgotten what makes people want to give them money in the first place. Hitting that orange button used to feel good. (It doesn't anymore.) So they cling to what worked in the past, because that's safe. Safety is a big thing at Riot these days! But it means that the big decisions that need to be made, aren't. And that's gonna start being a problem.
