Mastery 8, I even designed it for you!

Hello everyone. This concept is nothing new. In fact, it has been asked about for nearly a thousand years. When can we get League of Legends Mastery 8?

Well, to hopefully get some wheels going, I took a shot at designing an interesting concept that would allow a fresh look at League of Legends mastery, as well as provide a fun, interactive way of acquiring the highest level of mastery on your favorite champs!

I would like to state that the color scheme, design, and idea are all completely up in the air. I am not a graphic designer, I am a computer science major with scuffed photoshop (Gimp). Please don't judge the design off the prototype image, but the concept itself.

https://i.imgur.com/P3ziQzA.png

My mastery 8 concept begins with having mastery 7 mastery fully unlocked for the desired champion. I know this is obvious, but still worth mentioning.

Upon receiving an S (perhaps S+?) on that M7 champion, you would receive a shard for Mastery 8. The Mastery 8 Shard can be activated in your Hextech Crafting menu.

Once Activated, the shard dives into a pool of random missions of varying difficulty, related to the role of the champ you're trying to unlock mastery with.

The mission will be game-sensitive, meaning "Do X in 5 games playing as "Champion""

This provides a bit of a challenge, that the current Mastery System is lacking severely.

Upon completing the mission, you receive a fragment, and your M8 shard is returned to you, allowing you to activate it again for another mission. However, if you FAIL A MISSION, your M8 Shard is destroyed, and you have to acquire another one. (You still keep your fragments from completing missions.)

Upon successfully completing 5 missions, and acquiring 5 fragments of Master 8, you are given mastery 8 for that champion, unlocking the icon and banner.

Lets do a quick example:

Say you want Mastery 8 on Nocturne , You play a game with him at Master 7, and get an S (S+) to receive a M8 Shard.

You activate the shard, and it dives into a hidden mission table for "assassin/fighter champs." The mission it pulls up is "Do 100,000 damage in 3 games as Nocturne "

You do some quick maths and see that you need to get 33k damage in the next three games.

You accomplish the task and recieve a fragment. (1/5)

Your shard is returned to you, and you activate it again. It dives into the hidden mission pool and brings back. "Acquire a Quadra kill or higher in the next 5 games asNocturne "

You try your best, but in the next 5 games, you fail to get a quadra kill.

You keep your fragment (1/5), but your M8 Shard is destroyed in the process.

You continue to playNocturne until you get an S (S+?) and your shard is returned to you.

After activating and completing three more missions, you are awarded mastery 8 Icon.

TLDR

  • Be Master 7, get an S (S+?) to get "Mastery 8 Shard"
  • Activate M8 Shard to get random mission for that champions class/role
  • Succeed in mission, get Mastery 8 Fragment, and your Mastery 8 Shard is returned to you.
  • Fail Mission, No fragment awarded, Mastery 8 shard is destroyed.
  • Acquire another M8 Shard by getting another S (S+?) in games.
  • Successfully complete 5 missions, collecting 5 fragments of Mastery 8 to be awarded mastery 8 with that champion.
  • Design is just my poor photoshop skills attempting to make something pleasing to the eye. Subject to change.

Didn't you design that bigger emote wheel too?

They should hire you lmao.

I don't like the colors too much, I think green/gold looks a little tacky. I still love the idea though. It kind of gives a purpose to the mission system outside of events/league tourneys.

I would like to see a list of missions you have in mind for each role. I can't think of what support would really... have to do in this case?

I like it! If I was Nami I would be moist, not cause I am a fish. But just because of Mastery 8!

why not make mastery mean something first? as it stands you can go 98 games 0-10-0, 2 games 10-0-0 and get mastery rank 7 so it doesn't mean anything

Honestly the design is really cool but imo green seems like a downgrade from the m7 blue.

I would like more a gold/white theme but that's just my view.

its not needed and all this would do is make people complain about not having mastery 9 and so on, the mission concept is a terrible idea because it would either ruin games by making people tunnel vision on 1 thing for it or they would be so unnoticeable that it wouldn't even feel like you accomplished anything

like lets take the 5 kills with ult on draven, all thats gonna do is make draven players save there ult for when it kills instead of getting good damage in fights which could lose the game for his team, and the other ones wheres its just deal x amount of damage over x games is just useless background on some champs and will encourage others to be more aggressive and only fighting to increase their damage numbers

[sg-ahri-3] no keen on the color green. It looks rather noobish considering that level 30 accounts get a icon border that's the same shade of green. Not to mention the Clash 'participant' banner is the same color as well. Doesn't come off as 'elite'.

I really like this, mostly because 7 is such an ugly number to end on ;P

Looks alright, but the gem in the middle should be an octagon (or maybe a nonagon, but at that point it's hard to tell sides apart with a shape that small)

Long story short, Mastery 5 is a triangle, Mastery 6 is a square, and Mastery 7 is a hexagon, so 8 should be an octagon.

Just my opinion

Ill make a Mastery 9/10 to add to this, I always had this image in my head for Mastery 9 and 10, ill try making it now. Ill make a post on it and add it to this one. And this mastery 8 one is almost exactly what i pictured for mastery 8, so good job on that.

Mastery 10: https://imgur.com/rsd4wrq

I dont know why the backgrounds are red, but theyd look something along the lines of that. With of course Riot adding some features to it to make it more unique

While I think the green is cool, the shapes and look definitely should be changed. Since 8 will be the final, it should either be a octagon shaped jewel or a circle pearl like jewel. I am a fan however of just keeping it simple with the banner and emblem thing. Also keeping it 'Get 5 s+ ranks' is also what it should stay.

The problem with the mission idea has showed itself in many other objective based games. People will play to the mission instead of the objective or what is best for the team in that moment.

The mission design would have to be somehow perfect to not create this issue and I’m not even sure it could be.

Take battlefield 1’s missions for example. To get the avenger or whatever, you have to kill someone who killed your teammate. If you’re on that mission you actually become encouraged to not save your teammate and let them die so you can get the avenger kill.

Even something as simple as “deal x damage” could promote mastery 8 seekers to constantly play aggressive even if it’s not smart to do so, especially in your example where they have to worry about the chance being destroyed if they don’t accomplish the task.

TLDR: people will play to effectively complete their missions not effectively win the game.

related to the role of the champ you're trying to unlock mastery with.

how the fuck does the role decide wether i can play the champ? if anything these missions should be based on the champs kit and not the role.

Steelflame10/13/2018, 2:18:07 AM1 votes

Something I'd be very wary about with missions for mastery 8 is that it promotes NOT winning the game right away in most cases. While the best play is always to seek to end the game ASAP, you will not get 33k damage in a 15 minute game where you stomped so hard as to force the enemy to just give up.

Lets have this happen in Ranked, where 4 people are trying to win, but the 5th is trying to farm his illusive mastery 8 token and keeps stalling the game to get it.

@OP: Your mastery mission concept sounds interesting and viable. I also suggested mastery level 8 and a design for it a while ago but... https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/general-discussion/zQwm7ced-riot-we-deserve-mastery-level-8-and-it-should-look-like-this [sg-lulu] people weren't really feeling my fancy crown xD But I give you an S+ on your idea :) I hope Riot looks into it

I am absolutely IN LOVE with this!!! It would actually get me to play League more, and practice to get better at the champion that I'm playing! PLEASE IMPLEMENT, RIOT

Freewalker10/16/2018, 1:33:10 PM1 votes

Mastery 8+ shouldn't be another grind, it should be a challenge.

  • Mastery 8 Challenge: Win 3 consecutive games (you can play other games in between) as X with an S or S+.

This way, you're not going out of your way to place a bunch of wards, when the goal is to prove how good you are with the champion/role.

I like your design! I have wanted Riot to add more levels for years now. You should take a look at https://pre00.deviantart.net/05d4/th/pre/i/2018/005/4/5/mastery_level_8__league_of_legends_by_laxyon-dbz1kxs.png

I like the idea of doing mini quests since it gives you something to play for. Remember with the old client how there was an "achievement" tab, yet they never did anything with it? Something like what the OP is proposing would be pretty neat.

I'd like to see mastery tokens above level 5 in ARAM too.
