"Challenger Ahri" is still a horrible name

...and should be changed back to Dauntless.

Since today is allegedly the day where Riot "resumes business", I thought it might be a good time to bring this issue to attention again.

There has already been a great thread with more than 100 upvotes about the topic on this very board that explains pretty in-depth why many people are dissatisfied with the name change. Theres's also a ton of negative feedback in the skin's PBE Thread. Even some folks over on Reddit have been complaining about it.

The short version:

  • Challenger is bound to cause confusion with the Challenger tier among newer players. There is just no reason to use this term for a skin when it already has a meaning in the LoL community and the two aren't linked whatsoever.

  • Challenger doesn't convey the beginning-of-the-season theme any better than Dauntless did - if you are a newer player without any idea about it, you wil have to look it up or ask someone about it either way - but Dauntless will at least be recognized as something of its own rather than lead to confusion with something else (see point above).

  • Dauntless was just a plain better name - it was really unique/creative and did a great job at invoking the fearlessness and ambition you feel at the start of a new season, which is why many players liked it and immediately felt attached to it. In comparison, Challenger just sounds weak, bland and boring.

  • Dumb "Challenged Ahri" jokes inbound.

So, considering all the relative attention this has gotten, can we at least have an update from a Rioter on the matter? Because so far there has been nothing - not even a statement why it was changed in the first place.

I'm a diehard Ahri main myself, so it would really bother me when this goes live with what I feel is an unfitting and boring name - especially since in that case it's most likely going to be the only skin for her I won't own.

**Edit2:**The splash art is on the PBE now, and it looks pretty awesome actually. Still nothing about the name though. It would be such a shame for this skin to not go live as the best possible version...

I'll buy the skin regardless, but Dauntless is WAY better. It's a more colourful and vibrant word. Challenger gives me a sense of dullness and boredom :P

i posted about this on the PBE feedback forum as soon as the name change was discovered. Haven't gotten any reply on the PBE forums at all from Riot, even though it seems that an overwhelming amount of testers agreed the name shouldn't have changed.

Part of the reason i think they changed it was people were confused at first about the concept, and i think they confused that with people being confused with the name too.

The name "Dauntless" is more fitting than challenger simply because of the meaning of the word. I understand Riot's intention is to have this celebrate the beginning of a new season, but what better word to describe this than a word that embodies the bold pursuit of your new goals regardless of the hurdles you'll face climbing the ladder.

Dauntless:

adjective

not to be daunted or intimidated; fearless; intrepid; bold: example: a dauntless hero.

What title could be better? Please reconsider changing this back, it's such an original and better word than "Challenger", and will simply confuse those without the skin, and annoy those with it from the constant "challenger fail" jokes. Sure we'll still get the annoying YA kiddies who think the word came from that stupid Divergent movie, but it's still so much better a title.

PLEASE CHANGE IT BACK RIOT!

When I hear "Challenger" I hear "Space Shuttle" and it's been quite a while. I agree that Dauntless is a better name, but to each his own.

The name is completely irrelevant and offers no benefit to riot if the name is "challenger ahri". There are a LOT of people that prefer "Dauntless Ahri" because of its creative name. To be honest dauntless fits the skin a lot better than challenger because it makes her sound more threatening and confident, challenger doesn't and makes her sound like she wasn't good in the first place. Yes, we understand that its a new season and there is reason to celebrate but its not worth celebrating the skin if its against what the community has to say. Lots of people really like the skin design and will get it either way but it would be a lot more satisfying if it gets its name changed back. Yes it may have sounded good on paper to change it to challenger ahri but the community says otherwise. Its a great skin and riot did a great job on it in my opinion but "challenger ahri" just doesnt sound right. If riot really wants a challenger skin they should make one for Fiora because she doesn't really have any skins. RITO PLZ, BRING BECK TEH DAUNTLESS Ahri

Wholeheartedly agree with the OP. I commented earlier on this but to summarize my points:

  1. General summation from observing comments from many people since the announcement: "Dauntless Ahri" = INSTA-BUY, "Challenger Ahri" = Not so sure I want it now. Best business decision to make profit off this skin would be to stick with Dauntless

  2. Anyone who signs on can be a "challenger", nothing special about that. But are those players "dauntless" in their determination to rise up the ranks? See. Dauntless has such a better sound to it to coincide with end-of-season "Victorious"

  3. Encourages toxicity Riot is trying to reign in by giving the trolls more ammo to harass someone wearing this skin. Don't enable the trolls Riot!

So yes, I am in full support in changing this back to "Dauntless" and hope someone in Riot sees the community backlash enough to listen on this issue.

Dauntless is so much cooler than challenger. Challenger Ahri makes it seem like it was given to people who got challenger.

Dauntless is definitely the superior name.

  • It's a more vivid word, and it fits both the theme of the skin and Ahri better than Challenger does
  • Challenger just sounds way too similar to the Championship skin series that already exists
  • Challenger is the name of a division, and it's just begging for confusion ("Do I need to be in challenger to get that skin?" "Challenger Ahri, are they in challenger?")

Why not just change the Challenger tier into something else? It never made sense for the best players in the world to be called challengers. They should be called Legendary.

Lame skin in general really. Was a good chance for ameratsu, or naruto type skin. Hell we missed our swim suit Ahri as well this summer. Riot needs better management.

I forget where I heard it (Probably News Of Legends), but I'm sure it was changed due to a copyright, possible about that new movie Divergent (Bleh). (Info on that here: http://divergent.wikia.com/wiki/Dauntless) if not, RITO PLZ. Challenger sounds waaaay to related to the tier.

Totally agree with you on not hearing anything and while "horrible" is a strong word I can see the dislike in the new name. Dauntless is a unique name while challenger is just kind of...meh.....but i will say it is frustrating that we had not heard anything back
