The new Fiora splash looks like the old one done by a less talented artist.

Okay, I actually really like what they did with her gameplay wise, but this splash art is a travesty.

If these two pictures were shown to me without context, I would assume the second one is the outdated, several years old splash from the time when Riot couldn't afford decent artists, and the first one is the all new shiny upgrade. It's not even that the new splash brings anything different to the table than the old one - it's pretty much the exact same pose in front of a similar background, just drawn with a worse art style. There have been quite a few downgrades in terms of splash arts recently (rip Kata), but this one has to take the cake.

And please Riot, don't try to fix this by editing the new, ugly splash. If anything, edit her new clothes to her existing splashart. The new splash really isn't salvagable at all - it's simply a worse version of the old one.

The old one looks like a "badass chick" ready to get into a fight.

The new one looks like the witch from sleeping beauty woke up angry, cropped onto Fiora, with a hair change.

She is balding heavily. But seriously the old one has a much better face and expression. I love the smirk.

Craft Zeppelin7/21/2015, 8:29:47 PM39 votes

The textures of her hair waving in the air is sheer skill of artwork on the previous splash.

While I don't think it's lower "quality", I prefer the old one. The quality of the new splash itself is nice, it's a sharper, cleaner image with a better resolution.

The art itself, however... Fiora's face and hair are bad. Her facial features are way too pronounced, Riot's signature pointy chin, along with huge cheekbones and a red nose. Her old hairstyle was much better too

The first one was more more realistic, vivid, and showed more depth to her character. This new one is pretty much some disney character.

Vistha Kai7/21/2015, 8:38:28 PM21 votes

I agree there are some quirks, but you are just insulting the dude.

Pros:

  1. It's sharper.
  2. It's nearly the same pose.
  3. It's more details.

Cons:

  1. Pink stripe, ugh.
  2. Lacks armor.

Wait... did you just write "it's lower quality"? I bet you always change videos on YouTube to 144p, because 720p is of "too low quality".

Fiora aged so old than his red streaks goes pink

I don't think it's worse at all. It's a just an entirely different art style as well as a different design for Fiora. Although I'm not a fan of the strange hair part and accentuated cheekbones/chin and I did prefer her old splash, I think the artist(s) did an amazing job with the new one and It's a bit unfair that you are judging the artist(s) based on the design of the drawn character and not the quality of the art itself. If you judging Fiora's new design, thats different entirely. I give huge props to every artist at Riot.

Bring in the artist of Captain Fortune. Fiora needs more help than the Pirates. Fiora

Trading Aces7/21/2015, 10:04:57 PM13 votes

Stylized doesn't mean "less talented". It means stylized. Though yes, the style isn't all that appealing.

Popstar Ahri7/21/2015, 11:49:37 PM10 votes

First they just had to remove my beloved 2011-2015 Ahri splash art to the one we have now...

second they have to replace the old kat splash art to the one we have now

and now Fiora too?...

wtf? why can't we keep all the old splash art that we used to have last year?

"If these two pictures were shown to me without context, I would assume the second one is the outdated, several years old splash from the time when Riot couldn't afford decent artists, and the first one is the all new shiny upgrade."

This is so true it hurts.

The new one looks like she's made out of rubber or plastic.

NemeBro7/21/2015, 10:26:32 PM7 votes

Yeah, the splash art is pretty bad. Not only does it look bad on its own, but it completely changed what Fiora looked like. I don't give a fuck about whether or not you prefer her new look to her old look, a lot of people liked her old look. Why did it need to be changed?

Older visual updates did just that, they updated the character's design.

This has replaced it.

Staraptor7/22/2015, 4:03:06 PM7 votes

I think calling the artist "less talented" is a little unfair. The second pic is better technique-wise, more action in the pose and things are very clear compared to the old, kind of fuzzy Fiora. Now, it's not the best ever. Her facial features need to be toned down a tad to make her look less evil-queen and more sophisticated, but that's most likely on whoever designed new Fiora, not solely the splash artist.

I like the background colors of the old splash, though, and am a little confused as to why they didn't put any stained glass in the new one, considering that's basically what her ult puts down. Other than that and the face I think the splash is on par with or even better than the old.

Hupsis7/21/2015, 9:24:10 PM6 votes

The new one looks like it's trying to fit with the recent art style Riot has been using on their splash art. Nothing wrong with that.

The old one is more artistic imo. For League I'd say the new one is better. In general the old one is more interesting.

Dragonis Gardia7/22/2015, 5:49:42 AM6 votes

The new artwork is awful....

ilt7/22/2015, 1:40:01 AM6 votes

why is riot changing their art into a cartoony DOTA Disney style?

Glorious Lesbian7/21/2015, 11:26:10 PM5 votes

Please just change her hair back. Red streaks and parted at the side, not the middle. THis isn't Fiora at all.

Aproxima7/21/2015, 9:54:30 PM5 votes

Aside of the obligatory question of where all her organs would fit in, I have to agree the new splash is bad. It's not so much about the art quality as more about art direction, which if you look back you can very clearly see shifting. At first it was really just improving the splashes while focusing on representing the champions. Then someone came up with the briliant idea of placing them in weird places and position, overall distracting it from the champion themself ((at least personally I think that's not what a splash art should be about. Don't get me wrong most of them are really solid art pieces, just not appropriate for splash arts.)) Now it seems they figured out what makes a splash art a splash art.

And now they're in the period of preferring very modern, but a lot of times not fitting overly accentuated shapes. It doesn't matter all that much on the body, but it really makes the faces look wierd. The recent arts look overly stylized (especially faces), making it look like some cell shaded flat polygon whatever. After all people look more like in the older arts than the newer. Not many people have features like they were made with a chisel and finished by a razor blade for good measure.

My two cents. (( PS: Sorry for the bad english, I couldn't really see what I was typing. )) PS2: I wonder if RIOT will ever dare to make an anatomically accurate portrayal of a human body.

PlushBores7/21/2015, 9:47:25 PM5 votes

the old splash look sexy but the new one is soo ugly

MVDuneCats7/22/2015, 2:53:29 PM5 votes

Fiora's new face looks gaunt and malnourished, or like she had (bad) plastic surgery.

MasqureMan7/22/2015, 3:48:59 PM5 votes

These complaints are so outrageous. To me, the first one's face looks too vague and the second looks updated and defined.

Ristos7/23/2015, 12:34:31 AM5 votes

Riot some how managed to turn one of the most visually appealing champions into a bad disney villain and with her in game model she turns into a plastic toy Fiora had a massive downgrade and I severely hope that they don't go through with it

Atuko7/22/2015, 3:51:49 PM4 votes

This entire thread is such a huge exaggeration. It's obvious that the new art is of better quality overall, you may not like how like currently /looks/, but the new art is certainly better quality, better lines, clearer, sharper.

Sukishoo7/22/2015, 3:52:29 PM4 votes

How at all is this a "worse" version of the original? The current one is old, very grainy, little detail... and so much less then this new one

Castanean7/22/2015, 12:53:29 AM4 votes

I don't really think it's as much about the splash as it immediately seems. It could be an issue with the VASTLY different feel of the design compared to the old one. They fancied Fiora's design up and made it a bit more modern, which in turn detracted a bit of the "Elegance" or "Grace" her old design had... This makes me worry a little that redesigned Taric wont look as fabulous as present day Taric.

Though on the good side; The new splash is really well drawn and the colors are much clearer than the old splash. The background is also drop-dead gorgeous and makes me despair in my shitty artistic abilities, causing me to curse my unsteady hands and wish I could draw pretty things.

But seriously. If they're gonna keep this splash I feel they could at least fix up Fiora's chin and left leg a bit(legs don't bend like that.) Perhaps tone down the "Shine" on her skin a bit too.

I am a digital artist myself, and I prefer the old splash art, ten times before the new one. I hate the new look and attitude of the character. She looks like Megan Fox (a bloody Barbie), like in the older one she looked like a true strong female character, ready to slice you into pieces. I don't like many of the new art Riot is using, and I prefer the old ones in cases like Fiora's art.

BakedLotion7/21/2015, 9:59:10 PM3 votes

You know the second one is newer because of the color contrast, but overall its bad. If the first one was a little brighter it would be a bit better. (its already better but still)
