Jungle Karthus: When did it become a thing?

I recently saw some high ranked jungles play Karthus Jungle. TheOddOne to be specific. I thought Jungle Karthus was only for trolls or Bronze where anything is viable. I just tried it and did fairly well. Made some stupid moves but it actually worked. When did it go from troll to viable and... why?

Karthus and Cassipeia jungle were always "decent". They can farm the jungle incredibly fast, and can become a threat that way. Their rise is linked to the feral flare, nowdays it is somewhat acceptable to play non-ganking afk jungle. Karthus is strong because of his ult, kinda hard to all-in when you know you have about 250 less HP because a random karthus ult.

Also, with the new exhaust, assassins are weaker than they were before, so you can play mages.

It's kind of like top vain. It's good for those who can actually pull it off, but from what I've seen, most can't.
