Why will older players (started season 1-3) won't play league anymore

So I was trying to convince some of my friends to give league another try. We were at my place and chilling having a few beers and I was shocked about what they thought about league. There were 3 big reasons as to why they all quit and wont come back. All of my friends were all diamond+ players and the last time they played seriously was season 6 & 7.

  1. Damage - "back in the day" you needed 2+ people to kill someone as fast as you do today. They showed me a clip of scarra on a massively fed zed not being able to 1 shot a vayne while hitting everything. Here is the clip: https://youtu.be/JvzqJsusdQI?t=1682 Then they pulled up a random game of league from the LCS summer split and showed how fast people died.

  2. Early vs Late game balance - Now this is something that I don't really see now but what they said the early game champs were really good early then they fell off hard. Where late game champions were really bad early and then came on like a rocket. They said like lvl 10-13 used to be the crossover point. What they feel happens now is every champ is pretty decent at all stages of the game so no matter who you pick you will be fine.

  3. Roles for players - They do not like the vast skill gaps in the few games that they have played of people in different roles. I did not understand what they meant and then they asked me whats your rank and who do you main? 'gold 1 caitlyn main'. If cait is banned and you had to play another adc do you feel confident you could win the game? I said 'yes' Then they asked whats my worst role? 'Jungle' If you had to rate yourself on your elo for jungle role, what would you say? 'silver 2ish'. Now imagine you are put in jungle and you are going up against a plat 4 jungler main, what do you feel your chances of winning are? 'when I'm autofilled I just count those games as a loss and to get them over with as quick as possible' Then he said exactly you can't play off roles near your main role level. Back in earlier seasons before positional ranked came out you had to be decent at every role in order to climb since you didn't know what you would get. You got the role you wanted like 30-40% of the time. Everybody was at max a few divisions (your gold 1 but can play every role at least at a gold 3-4 level) off your main rank. He's like the overall general knowledge of players went down but the individual roles of players have went way up.

Thoughts?

low sample size

a very high % of the player base came to the game by the end of season 3 so the majority are playing for well over 5 years

people that quit after 1 year of playing usually don't come back as the game is not for them or stopped playing games all together it has nothing to do with how the game has evolved it has everything to do with personal preference of how one decides to spend their free time

Also towards your damage argument

He didn't hit everything he missed 1 Q and 1 e and didn't hit his passive and then proceeded to auto attack an irelia to death

stop cherry picking examples to suit your arguments stop looking through your rose tinted glasses to base your argument upon and you will have much better time enjoying the game

Wife Kids Work New Games

I would be one of them but I always considered LoL a ugly trash game with stupid map where you do the same thing over and over... So I started playing around season 5-6 (Maybe thats why they actually left). I hated WoW as well and started plying it later too (End of Pandaria and Beginning of WoD) 🤣

I hope that one day I will not start playing Overwatch, Fortnite and Minecraft because those are at my current 'trash' list 😂

I doubt its gameplay related 'problem' that people dont want to go back. Amount of new champions is kinda scary tho

I play League since season 1 and none of those are a reason for me to quit.

  1. I much prefer current damage over the scenario in the video. A carry without any defensive items shouldn't be able to get hit by everything and still survive getting ganked by a fed assassin.
  2. Being useless in early or in late game just isn't that fun. Even with the recent Kayle rework, her strength has been flattened after complaints that she's too bad early and too good late.
  3. Can't really comment on this one since I usually play fill and only normal games.

I started to play somewhere between season 3 and 4, so i cant rly comment on the 1st point. On 2nd point I agree. And also champs had a clear powerspike, whether it would be in lvls or items. Best example I can think of is old Akali. Before lvl6 she was weak, but after that you had to respect her if you didnt put her behind enough.

And I can mostly relate to the 3rd point. This, among other reasons, is why the quality in players skill dropped massively imo. Back in season 7 when i was serious about climbing, went throught the whole silver elo. Despite them not being good players, you could work with them. They knew how to carry their own weight and they knew at least the basics of the game. But now, even in gold, a lot of players are the total opposite.

To add to this, I also blame the new runes and the new leveling system. Back then, even after you hit lvl 30 you had to play a lot of games before you were able to afford champs, runes and optimally, rune pages. Playing more games gave you more gameplay experience, and time to learn different champs and different roles.

But thats not the case anymore. You dont have to buy rune pages nor runes, and you get so much free BE and champs on LEVEL 15. So you dont have to invest any time in norms past lvl 30, you can hop straight into ranked. And since the starting MMR of new players is somewhere in mid/high silver-low gold, they get their asses whooped by more experienced players.

When i was still on EUNE, I created a new account to see what its like to play on EUW. That account is lvl 18 now and I have over 17k BE and 7 champs, all of which i got through level up rewards. (will post pics of that account later if you want, dont have time rn)

I'm an older player. Only thing that drove me away once were the reworks, so...

Season 1 here and as much as i would like to play in the old days, the new changes isnt enough for me to stop playing the game.

Thant's an easy one.

For one thing... LoL it's almost a different game altogether now.

2nd reason... some gamers (if not most) - loose their excitement while playing the same game over and over, year after year. So they move to something else. Games like Quake 2, Star-craft, Age of Empires 2, Red Alert 2, Heroes 3, Diablo 2, Unreal Tournament, Half Life, Counterstrike 1.6, Need for Speed 2, Lineage 2 and so on... used to a big thing back in the old days. Tho, for the majority - now they're just a thing of the past.

Last but no least... LoL was released almost 10 years ago, and... we humans are affected by this thing called aging and growing up. That being said... most people who played LoL since the beginning - probably moved on to bigger and better things (a job - a career, marriage - family and children or some other activity that takes a big chunk of their time). And LoL is just a thing of the past for them.

As someone that started in late season 2, I can definitely resonate with a lot of these, especially regarding auto-fill and positional queuing. I do feel it has handicapped the game. People used to have to play everything to some extent, but now we are able to specialize a lot more which means autofill feels a lot worse even though it's just a more controlled version of what the game used to be like.

If I would have one complaint not listed, it would be vision changes. It still bothers me the limit that has been put on warding, especially early game. I get 1 ward every few minutes and it lasts a minute or so (all depending on level and stuff). And come late game, I only get three wards plus a control ward when I'm trying to ward up baron, elder drake, enemy buffs, jungle paths, prep for picks,....you get the idea. It was suppose to force people into warding no matter what the role, but we all know that never happened. I get you're supposed to be strategic and not spam the map with wards, but unless you get a teammate or two to help you (rare), you're stuck trying to provide vision with very limited tools.

I've been playing since Hecarim came out, quit for about a year and came back with my friends. Who knows?
