Still don't own every champ after over 2200 games played, why riot?

Speeedy··11 votes·5,923 views

I was trying to talk my gf into playing league with me and she was going along with it until we discovered the following point. She then pointed out to me that I play a decent amount and I still don't own every champion so we looked it up and found this:

40+ champions not owned yet. I have been playing since season 5 (didn't really play till season 6) with over 2200 games (2263 to be exact according to op.gg) and I still have a lot to go (champions). With just using Blue essence or IP from back in the day. I average over 1 game per day since season 5.

Her quote was "why as a new player would I want to grind for 3+ years to be even where you will be or further behind you because more champions will be released by then. I rather not play than playing years of catch up"

I can't really disagree with her that its a sad fact that I still cant get every champion after how many games I have played. This system has a major barrier for new players to get over which is wrong. This is one of the major problems for this game. Why is the barrier for new players so hard? I didn't realize this till we looked it up and to own every champion should take 1-2 years max.

having all champs is pretty much useless besides getting a champ for someone in draft you just need like 3 champs per role that you like and you're good

Try earning up that many champs playing a ton over 2.5 years, own over 100 champs, just to have your account permanently banned for calling a feeding (and provoking/insulting) teammate trash/an idiot/braindead (because riot's trash punishment system cares more about you hurting someones feels than that person ruining your game by picking viktor support, not buying a support item, and feeding relentlessly).

Just remember your behavior is never your own fault. They literally reached through the internet and made you be a dick. lol

But they un-ironically did provoke him, so you're saying some troll should still get to play the game, while a loyal fan who has put thousands of hours and dollars into the game gets screwed? This whole toxicity meme has gone way too far, don't be a troll, and you won't get hate.

No, I think you have a warped view of 'provoking behavior'. For instance, if you're in a public space with a child around screaming and running around happily as children do enjoying themselves, that is not a provocation to you even if you find children the most annoying things in the planet. The kid is just being a kid. The person can be more or less playing how he wants. Even if it isn't playing to win, that kid isn't making you call him an asshole to his face or push him in the sand. You're choosing your reaction to them. Anything else is just admitting you have zero agency over yourself, and are not the master of yourself. You're just a puppet of everyone else especially emotionally. Sure the kid may annoy you. You have to accept that it is on YOU not the kid that you find it annoying because that sort of thing is acceptable by our societal standards. Even if it wasn't acceptable societally, your reaction is still your own. If you were to kick them, that'd still be wrongdoing even if you 'feel like you were provoked by the kid.'

I've been considered a troll before by my teammates because I experiment sometimes with new champions when they come out. I was literally called a troll for building 'high resist pyke' the week he came out because I saw imaqtpie do it and it seemed fun. I play to win. I never ever troll my teammates (which is a very active thing to do). I always try to play to advance my team's position. That's the problem with determining what is a troll with the individual's metric. It can literally be any sort of play at that point which boils down to 'Anything I dislike or can blame for why the team lost or I lost my lane. I lost mid! SUPPORT AND JG DIDN'T GANK ENOUGH!'. It's just bad logic and a bad foundation for what is and is not something.

This exactly, its ranked, gragas and i are trying hard to bring the game back meanwhile this guy is flaming us saying its our fault for losing (even though he ended the match w/ 18 deaths and only 11 kill participation) and saying my build is shit/ "a pussy build."

Comparing the dude to "an innocent child just playing the game" is utterly assinine.

But i knew I'd get downvoted b/c the boards are populated by the same trolls that riots system protects (or at least they're the loudest voices).

Perma banned? This means youve been punished before. Dont try to play the "but im a loyal fan" card and try to get some fake pitty. Riot doesnt want people being dicks to others in game. You were being a dick to another person, so they dont want you playing their game.

While i dont like the idea of permanent bans, you arent going to get any pitty from me from something you well and clear desserved.

Alex h87211 votes

I'll admit the first punishment i got was deserved, got tilted and was being abusive to the enemy team in /all and was way over the top.

This one however i held back a lot, and felt like i wasn't flaming super hard just kinda trash talking (and as said, in response to his trash talk) I admit shouldve just muted and kept trying to play but i was frustrated, i just think w/ no hate speech or extreme flaming (again just saying he's braindead/an idiot/should stick to bots) doesnt deserve a perma.

I find it HILARIOUS tho that largely the people saying "LOL U DESERVE NO SYMPATHY GET BANNED LUL" seem to all be low elo kids, probably the same ppl who troll in ranked and tilt their teams and report anyone who is even mildly toxic.

I remember a time when in online gaming a little trash talk/flame was EXPECTED, and if you cried about it you were told to grow some thicker skin, but companies like riot would rather cater to crybaby kids instead, unfortunate.

If this is your response, its pretty clear you deserved it. Youre constantly pushing the blame on everyone else instead of just facing the fact that you violated the summoners code repeatedly, far moreso than over 99.9% of the playerbase in order to receive a perma. You cant blame the person you berated nor others for having "thin skin". The reality is no one wants to deal with you, and riot has shown you the door as a result.

deadlychuck1 votes

Honestly, it really shouldn't matter to riot. The only time that a player should be ban is if they're forcibly disrupting people from playing the game, by means that are not possible in the game. E.g. hackers.

That said, someone being an asshole, not riot's problem there's a mute feature. Someone feeding? Not riot's problem, because they're not stopping players from playing the game. Though that does assume riot still thinks of SR as the game, and not the fucking ranked system itself.

The fact of the matter is that people aren't going to avoid a game because of toxic community or because of a particular toxic player. If they like the game, they'll play the game, if they don't like the game they will not. No real amount of random nobodies on the internet will really stop them. So when riot bans a player, they're actively hurting their own wallet all to appease players who feel like they need to go tell the teacher, with no return.

A better community doesn't make your game more approachable, better and wider scope gameplay does.

Pika Fox1 votes

Fact is the overwhelming majority of the playerbase wants toxic players removed from the game. Removed completely. While im against bans on principle, i have no sympathy for anyone who has been banned for being a dick.

deadlychuck1 votes

Because I'm sure you're physically incapable of being an intentional asshole to someone. No, you absolutely should have sympathy for someone being a dick and having hundreds of their dollars and thousands of hours appropriated, because frankly very very very few people are capable of not turning into that kind of person, under sufficient conditions. The idea that you're somehow immune to that kind of behavior, or even resistant to it more than any other arbitrary person, makes you more susceptible to shifting towards it. By the time you've slowly shifted that far, then you better hope that cooler, more liberal, heads prevail when you inevitably reach that point.

Pika Fox1 votes

No, they desserve zero sympathy. Youre allowed to have off games. The ones who get permad are the ones who have hundreds of "off" games. They lost their right to sympathy after the 2nd chat ban.

deadlychuck1 votes

I'm not talking about off games. Hint's why i didn't reference them.

Pika Fox1 votes

If youre consistently a dick, you get 0 sympathy.

deadlychuck1 votes

Then you deserve everything that's coming to you.

Stray Kat1 votes

Then don't compare it to an innocent child. Compare it to the biggest jackass you've ever met, walking into the store you work at, walking up to the counter where you work, and saying "You're an ugly piece of garbage". Sure, it's rude. Sure, it's uncalled for. But you ignore it, and go on about the transaction. Why? Because it's their prerogative to be a jackass, and you'll get fired by your boss if you just start talking trash to them in response - Even though they instigated it.

More importantly - You're NEVER EVER EVEN ONCE going to have a better chance of winning by spending your time talking shit and tilting your own team. Have a problem with someone? Mute them and play. Focus on your own play, and what YOU do/say. That's the only thing you actually have any control over.

Alex h87211 votes

The analogy is bad, b/c its more like were both customers at the same store, but other than that valid point.

deadlychuck1 votes

I agree. I don't think riot should really be banning anyone from their game when doing so in effect repossesses all of the money and time that you've put into the account. It's a pretty fucking unfriendly practice for the consumers.

Even then, a more effective method of people getting upset and having their feelings hurt, would unironically be to identify the person who's getting the feeling hurt (rather than the multiple people hurting their feelings) and just start defaulting their chat to mute...

It's a pretty fucking unfriendly practice to agree to behave nicely and then behave like shit. Every single person that gets banned for toxicity deserves to lose everything related to league.

deadlychuck1 votes

Not really. Riot is likely doing more harm to their game by banning people who might be deemed "toxic", to protect the few people who can't move past such "toxic" behavior. And you want to know what's way more of an unfriendly practice? Taking hundreds of dollars from people, then stopping them from using the things that they purchased.

If you ban a person who had $200 invested into the game, very well might not want to come back, not wanting to waste more money. Where as if you don't ban that person, the chances that someone else quits the game because of them not getting ban is infinitesimally low, and there's no reason to think that someone who isn't toxic would be more willing to spend money on the game than someone who is... well unless you're heavy handed in your banning practices, and the person knows that they don't want to spend money on the game again knowing it all might just go to waste.

well as much as people want everything to be 100% free its not. RIOT IS A FOR PROFIT COMPANY , they dont want you to get all the champs with IP/BE they want you to spend $$$

Speeedy4 votes

it shouldn't take that much time to grind though if i spent 20 min per game that is ~754 hours of gameplay and I still haven't unlocked everything. Long RPG games take a 150 hours to unlock everything. See the problem here, plus I've spent well over $100 on skins

once again why do you think RIOT wants you to be able to unlock all the champs for free?

they arent a charity. so just curious how much $ have you spent on this game?

deadlychuck1 votes

While riot isn't a charity, their dev team really doesn't make them that much money. Releasing a champion probably earns riot 1/10 as much money as releasing a skin for ANY champion, let alone their more popular ones.

My friend who works at EPIC hates that I poke fun at him as a dev for exactly this, because he can't deny it. The development team creates an audience and the art team makes the money. How much money do you think EPIC made because of that John Wick skin vs how much do you think they made because they nerfed double pumping?

well i dont know. but never the less if they dont make much off of champs then why would they give them for free easier ?

Because you're not going to be interested in buying a skin for a champion you don't own.

but then again i really dont care about the skins to begin with . i really only get them through the hextext crafting or whatever IP i had left over from gifting others

Well you do want to have at least 3 per role just Incase the champs you want to play are either banned or are picked before you.

Makimoke1 votes

I'd even go for 5-6 for roles relying heavily on counterpicks, like mid/top/supp. But at best you'd have to get 21/22 champions tops.

Tell her that she's not going to play or even enjoy ALL champions. Unless she's a collector or something...

I have the same thoughts as her once. I bought several champions and I can't tell you how much I regret buying them. Some champions are off not be bought at all.

yeppp i have been playing since season two, over 6000 games played and i still don't have every champ.

gotopie2 votes

As someone who unlocked all champs and 20 rune pages pre-rune rework, I can tell you it's not important. I had nothing else to spend IP on and I used to buy expensive champs when on sale for RP (regret this ever since I started accumulating excess IP previous seasons lol).

At any given time, I only used a total of 5 rune pages and a handful of champs. It's nice having them all for trading or experimenting, and as a new player it seems more important, but it really isn't. The way the new system is set up you can easily make a new account and have every champion you need with minimal grinding after 30. For new players it might be a little more daunting because you don't know what you want to play, but that's what the free rotation is there for.

I recommend you tell your gf to just play the free week champs, don't unlock or DE anything until after 30, when she has a grasp of what she likes to play, and then start planning what she wants to unlock. The system is more generous now than in the past, but takes a little planning so you're not wasting BE on random shards.

hrooza dota 1 votes

even if you have all champs good chance you wont play 60% of them at all like look at dota for example all heroes are free yet almost every single player stick to a very limited pool of heroes and rarely go out of that pool becuase of how hard other heroes are or how their gameplay is hated by said person

same goes for lol i only own about 32 champs and atm im little lost to what champ i want to get after i create katarina from shards (maybe i will go after the rest of supp roasters or get yas or whatever)

MrFawknSunshine2 votes

i have all champs i have had all champs for a long while now, well for 2 seasons at least. i have 136k in BE and i never have to pay $ for a champ again. i have played since end of season 2/preseason of 3. i did get the start bundles when i started playing to have champs. and i always got the cheapest cost champs 1st. in all that time , with all champs. 4 accounts. i have only spent a total of $350 on this game and majority of that was gifting to friends for bdays/xmas etc.

and having all champs i play like 6-10 of them lul kinda of a one trick.

Automated Riven1 votes

I have had all the champions for 5 years. I have about 15 that have zero mastery on. And about 100 that have mastery 1 or 2. And like 35 that I actually got to mastery 4-5. With 7 mastery 7 and 3 mastery 6. Going back I could have purchased 35 champions and played the rest on free weeks. I don't regret buying them but I sure as hell am not gonna buy them on my smurfs.

deadlychuck1 votes

I've got somewhere around 7000 games played, and I've unlocked every champion, however I've only got around 60k excess BE. That said most of that was in the old IP system as opposed to the new BE system, which is supposedly faster at gaining BE overall, but I'm still not really seeing it.

The Ecdysiast1 votes

I've been playing since late in season 2 and didn't have all the champions until late 2016.

Salron1 votes

The average player cannot play more than a handful of champions well so it's really not that big a deal

Pika Fox1 votes

While i dont think its nearly as bad as the OP is letting on, your comment isnt good. Casual players enjoy playing many different champs, so it is a big deal.

TruelyTrueTrueth1 votes

Ok but it’s not like you need ALL the champions out of all the champs I have I only play a good 10 of them

BobaFlautist1 votes
  1. You don't need anywhere near that many champions to succeed in league. All the most successful players main 1 roll with a few solid picks in off rolls, you absolutely don't need more than like 30 champs at most to be competitive.

  2. You, like me and everyone else that's been playing that long, probably spent an enormous amount of IP on runes. Runes reforged indirectly cut the grind to unlock champions by an insane amount.

Pika Fox1 votes
  1. champions are far easier to get now. You get more BE than you ever would get IP, and 1-30 gives you so many free champs

  2. We had to waste our IP on runes. New players dont need to.

  3. riot is shifting to doing more reworks going forward.

Meep Man1 votes

Im surprised. Ive played about... I donno how many games. Since about beginning Season 4? So maybe 4 years or so? I have every champion I want, and the rest I intentionally haven't bought yet, but could have.
