A weird mammal fact that may blow your mind

Placental mammals, like us, are missing an enzyme mediated DNA repair mechanism for dealing with UV damage. That's all well and good, but you know who isn't missing it? Prototherians (monotremes-- Echidnas, platypus) and Metatherians (Marsupials).

That's right. The humble, trash-eating opossum has a more advanced DNA repair mechanism than you, the pinnacle of life as we know it.

I mean, You gotta remember

Oppossums gotta be immune to like every fucking disease in the world just to live.

That's because humans have sunscreen that stops us from getting UV damage in the first place. An ounce of prevention beats a pound of cure.
