I don't see why it wouldnt. As long as u can successfully defend ur carry then it should be fine. Meaning, don't fuck up ur E and don't miss ur Q when the enemy jungler is running at u guys. If u can do those 2 things, u should be fine.

I play him in support occassionally. Idk how he was back then but i like Gragas support.
