know why i can't stand being a jungler?

ScarnMichaelScar··96 votes·8,240 views

it has nothing to do with jungle being not fun. i loved jungle. even when the difficulty got amped to insane levels. because it felt GOOD to do good in such a hard jungle.

no. i hate jungle because no matter how many times i explain to my laners that jungle mobs are worth substantially less to them than they are to me thanks to machete/jungle item, they still say "i need it more"

what laners need to understand about the new jungle is this ill put it in bold for those of you that do this so you can understand better

jungle is not at all like it was last season, 2 seasons ago, or 3 seasons ago. when you take jungle mobs, unlike seasons 2-4, the gold does not just get distributed to a different person. gold is LOST. junglers get 15-30 bonus gold per large jungle monster they kill thanks to machete/upgraded machete. Not to mention riot even nerfed the amount of gold laners get from taking jungle mobs to combat this problem of laners thinking they're entitled to everything. you are no longer distributing gold to a different part of the team by taking jungle mobs. you are LOSING 15-30 overall gold for your team per jungle camp you take.

You may not think it is very much because you're a laner who can readily farm about 80 gold per minion wave that spawns every minute, but when a jungler has to compete with the enemy team AND his team for his own jungle camps, it really hurts. junglers already make substantially less gold than laners barring supports. and when you take jungle camps like wolves, krugs, gromp, raptors, or even red or blue buff without ASKING YOUR JUNGLER FIRST you're basically throwing a big middle finger up to him/her. and then you have the nerve to get mad when he goes to your lane to try and farm some minions to make up for gold lost. it is also MUCH riskier for a jungle to walk into a lane and cs. because junglers have less gold, and are lower level, they are at much higher risk of dying due to having less items, less damage, and less health/mana than enemy laners.

please laners. if you are going to take jungle camps, ASK YOUR JUNGLER FIRST. and if he says no, it's probably not because he's an asshole. its because he NEEDS the gold a hell of a lot more than you do, and that does NOT mean take it anyway. that's a sure-fire way to get on your jungler's bad side, and you have no one but yourself to blame when he decides he won't help your lane but instead go help out others.

TL;DR Laners, stop taking your jungle's farm without permission. It's obnoxious, and only stands to hurt your team in the long run anyway.

Don't forget the smite buffs.

If I'm a tanky jungler, don't take the frog. Krugs are alright. If I'm aa reliant or squishy, take the frog but leave the krugs.

If you want a gank, you better leave those chickens alone, 'cause I'm going to need them if you can't even remember which side of the river your enemy laner warded. And if we're being invaded often, or you want my buffs, or you aren't buy wards, then you better leave wolves alone so I can smite them for a free ward. I'm going to need that second red buff if I'm not Fiddlesticks, and I almost always need the second blue buff for my clears. Otherwise, take them unless you're losing your lane.

Just be considerate, laners. I strategize my smites in the jungle, and if you take the wrong camp it's going to screw up my jungling and half the map's security. Ask, and depending on what I plan on doing for the next 3-5 minutes, I'll let you know which camps are for the taking.

And if you whine about minion tax, you keep your ass out of my jungle.

Top laner takes gromp and mid laner takes raptors. Adc steals whatever he walks by.

My allies counterjungle me more than my enemies now.

Only time I ask for jungle farm is when I need like 100 more gold for an item especially when it is closer to me then the lane.

Malix Farwin8 votes

This pretty much^

Junglers get far more gold from jungle creeps then anyone else in the game, unless i am very close to buying a huge item i generally dont take jungle camps. Enemies jungle is a whole other story.

If you need the extra gold go steal them from the enemy jg

Why doesn't this have more upvotes?

Adrian Umbra2 votes

Because there are situations where that's not a safe or viable option, whether due to positioning, smart warding by the enemy team, or how far behind you are. There are absolutely times when giving the laners your jungle camps is a good option. Having your camps constantly taken from you and robbing you of gold is a no-no, though.

In addition to jungle camps the enemy jungle also contains a champion with limited xp and farm, that you can also last hit for gold and XP

The only time that I take things like that are when I know it would be highly inefficient for the jungler to come to the camp in question before it would respawn. Situations like taking botlane blue krugs if my jungler is in the process of ganking top while wolves and wraiths are both still up, and for him to conceivably come to these krugs before they respawn would require walking past his other mobs, effectively wasting income rate, only then do I poach the jungle. Being that jungle is one of my primary roles, I always try to be courteous of their territory when I'm in other lanes.

Syn Zykan5 votes

This is entirely acceptable, it is annoying though when I just ganked top and mid grabs wolves on blue side when gromp is already down. of course it is always possible I will go ward enemy jungle or steal their krugs but at least give me the option (unless you are karthus because seriously take all the farm you can get on him)

Jamnon1 votes

Just curious, but why is Karthus an exception, in your mind?

Syn Zykan2 votes

Karthus is that champ that needs to hit item spikes before people get any defenses for him. His ult is extremely game changing if used right and if he gets ahead at all it is just beautiful @_@ (well at least in solo que where it is far less likely for people to coordinate to shut him down for fights then disengage properly)

If he wants my wolves by all means he can have them and I'll just set up vision or do other things (I might want raptor smite buff so those are a little more iffy), I would rather him have more farm options than myself simply because him being farmed early increases my win % chance by more than if I have a slightly earlier frozen heart.

I would like to keep in mind I play champs like Amumu, where even if I am slightly behind I can still do things. Only if the %win increase is drastic with you poaching is it acceptable and Karthus doing it can actually swing every single lane in our favor with a well used Ulti.

Adrian Umbra2 votes

Karth wants tons of items and wants them yesterday, with some taking a while to stack up (RoA, tear) and some just giving him the damage that he needs in order to be relevant.

What if my jungler never comes to my lane and instead ignores me despite getting ganked 4 times by the enemy jungler? 9 minute span btw. Am I entitled to your camps now that, due to your lack of attendance, I fell behind in lane (1 death in 4 ganks, lost 20-30 cs during laning iirc)? Not saying I did it before, no my jungler never showed this game (happens more than you'd think, thankfully I'm usually support so I end up being jungler 2.0 after bot is gone) that I was mid. I was polite, asked for gank, waited. Gave up, hugged tower, froze in the dark as Sejunai came spinning her mace thing at me while Lux shot laser cannons. Terrifying. I love GOOD junglers, I hate the ones that ignore my crises. I am more than happy (especially since I enjoy/main mid/supp) to help you gank other lanes when mine is safe- but if you toss me to the wind and want me to respect your camp/gold, gonna have to be honest: I will spite steal your camps. Sorry for the rant, but my love of junglers died that day. Still trying to rekindle.

lights fire, points at Lee you don't want to deal with this...go away....

Passionlip3 votes

What about if Top and Mid needed help too? If all 3 lanes are losing, the jungler has to try to help all of them, and that can be pretty hard on him - he can come as fast as he can, but the point is that he's only one person. Sometimes you've just to grit your teeth and try your hardest - everytime i get a game like that i have the people of one lane who complain 'ehi, you never ganked in my lane.' 'Yes, because i was helping Mid and Top' 'And Botlane?' 'I'm only one person, you know?'

If he was just sleeping is another thing, but look what's actually happening in the game as a whole and don't be selfcentric.

EvilRabbitt1 votes

I was mid. I told my jungler if he got me out of mid I could help him roam. He didn't respond, communicate, make any indication to assist mine or top lane, and proceeded to take my farm while in lane. I understand if you help people, I congratulate and understand the trade-off. What I'm saying is beyond minimal ganks to the point of negligence. If you neglect my lane (and the rest of your team for long periods of time where we get ganked in a 3 to 1 ratio (3 them 1 you)) and take my farm while doing it, am I not entitled to your jungle camps seeing as you aren't putting them to good use?

MohawkBird1 votes

Did you get the kill? He might have just been taxing a few minions, which is okay to do is the laner gets the kill I feel.

EvilRabbitt1 votes

No. Sorry for being confusing.

My jungler NEVER ganked mid. Ganked top once. Ganked bot twice. 3 ganks in 9 minutes (sounds good on paper). Meanwhile, enemy jungler ganked me 4 times, hit top 2, hit bot 5 in the same time span. Said jungler was the initiator for teamfights, and had been unable to keep up because he had not ganked (kills are 300, assists are 100 to 150 during laning). So when we fought, I had to initiate with my utility, which resulted in one of the squishiest back liners being obliterated instantly. I had a huge utility kit that decided team fights IF I WASN'T focused, but the jungler hadn't gotten fed enough to do initiations and was unable to be anywhere in the front line.

LOL Spammer1 votes

What champion was he?

EvilRabbitt1 votes

I want to say, but since its an accusation I'm not sure if I can. ToA is confusing. Can I xD or will it be like "BANNED AGAIN SUCKER!"?

Adrian Umbra1 votes

You can say which champion they were without calling them out specifically. That's completely fine. Even with that, you're not trying to get them reported or shaming them, so there's no reason to report you for shame faming. I'm actually quite curious on both which champion your jungler was and which champion you were playing from the scenario.

EvilRabbitt1 votes

Jungle Amumu, Karma Mid (attempted to Karma support, but someone instalocked Bard if memory serves....hype op?). That's probably why it bothered me, used to my Ahri mid.

Adrian Umbra1 votes

As strange as it may sound to you, Amumu is one of those tanks who needs a lot more farm than others. You'll notice that, as opposed to some tanks who have multiple CC abilities, Amumu has only his Q and ult, both abilities that are on long cooldowns and relying more on the AoE damage from his W and E in addition to his CC (therefore needing durability, AP, and CDR on a jungler's income). Amumu also cannot disengage, once he's in a fight, he's in it until he dies or until he can waddle away, likely with the whole team on his tail. It sounded like you had either an unfortunate case of a timid Amumu or one who was waiting too much for a time to engage.

Amumu should have been ganking more than he did (or farming more efficiently, the jungle for a jungler is almost worth a laner's income when farmed correctly) and it's saddening to hear that you got stuck with a champion you didn't want to take mid, but Amumu's situation is starting to sound a lot more understandable. Against a more gank spam type jungler like Sejuani or Zac, Amumu's ganking power (especially sustained ganking when he doesn't have blue due to mana issues) is generally weaker, which his farming power and scaling are a lot stronger. If his lanes were behind enough, trying to farm up and scale into a monster tank while keeping control of crabs, warding, and counterganking when he can.

Again, not saying he played the situation the right way (because I didn't get to watch the game and see for myself), but it's entirely possible that he chose the right strategy and didn't pull it off well, his laners didn't play defensively enough, or the enemy jungler was just really, really good. Too many variables.

And from Match History it looks like it was an enemy Sejuani jungle and that your Amumu teammate had plenty of gold to his name (more than Sejuani), but wasted it by itemizing pure armor with his only health items being Cinderhulk and Banshee's, which wasted his Cinderhulk's potential. Given how far behind you were, you were probably alright with taking the wolf camp at least.

EvilRabbitt1 votes

Really? I thought with Amumu's gapclose/root he was made for post-6 ganking... good to know. At the engage bit, I kept telling them I'd happily waste my mantra on the shield if they went deep. Thanks for your time. =) Sorry if I was belligerent mate, rough match streak and this bothered me.

What you don't understand about this game, is that it is NOT the junglers responsibility to make sure you don't lose your lane. That is Your responsibility, and yours alone. It IS the Junglers responsibility to provide pressure and assistance when available and beneficial for the game.

But It REALLY sucks as the jungler, when All 3 lanes are losing, and all 3 are talking to the jungler like it's his fault that you got over extended and got ganked by the enemy Jungler. I as a Jungler don't control your lane, nor can I be in all 3 lanes at once.

Rito Uydr 1 votes

Who ever said you need to be in all 3 lanes at once?

Adrian Umbra3 votes

Every laner losing their lanes that's asking for help constantly. Which is sometimes all 3. I've BEEN the jungler when all my lanes are losing. It's painful as hell and I feel like I'm running around the map trying to put out fires while juggling my jungle camps, my buff control, dragon, and keeping track of the enemy jungler.

If any of my lanes starts complaining about how I never gank in that situation (especially when I HAVE ganked or have explained the situation), they're likely going to be the one I declare triage on and leave to their fate because they're likely to contribute the least to the team simply due to getting frustrated and on tilt.

Rito Uydr 2 votes

I am sure, no one ever told you to be in all 3 lanes at once. Maybe it's painful now, and you are in a hurry now because you made mistakes earlier?

If you are doing mistakes you will fall behind! Just like a laner that doesn't take any farm can't win the lane anymore at one point. Sorry to break it through you, but the popular forum opinion, which is heavily defended by every silver jungler ever, that a jungler has no responsibilities and can't do mistakes and therefore it is always the laners fault, is simply not true. "It was not me who died", sounds like a good and easy excuse used by many (especially junglers in threads like this), but it really is just wrong. Someone else can die, and it might be more your fault than his.

How many junglers qq here in the forums that laners dont buy wards and die because of it? And how many buy wards themself? Did you know, that when playing from red, you can very easy protect top from ganks when warding the upper mid lane jungle entrance? And that it is way easier for a jungler to keep a ward up there than for a top laner who is already warding the river (imho)? No more ganks from behind on your top lane!

Same for blue side, ward the lower mid jungle entrance and your bot can't get ganked from behind anymore!

How many times did you 'happen' to die in those games? What if the time the enemy jungler killed top level 2, you just went there too and blocked his way? Or farmed up fast and then invaded him with your 1 level advantage? How many times did you see your mid is losing and decided to steal enemy second blue and give yours to your own mid laner? Could easily turn a lane around. (tho this are just possible examples).

1-2 ganks prevented, suddenly a lane is winning and you just never come into the situation where you must be running around to put out fires.

Adrian Umbra2 votes

In the last couple games where this happened, I was dominating and ended up carrying one to victory, extending the other much further. On top of that, these were games with friends, one or two of whom are not even level 30 and who I don't really expect to go even against higher level opponents (usually Silver-Gold). I understand why they're losing, they know that I don't expect them to own their lane, and nobody's going to be complaining and pointing fingers at each other since we're all talking and communicating and are comfortable. It's still stressful when ever lane gives up a kill before you can get your back in though (with zero enemy jungle presence) and it's really hard to have to pick who to save and who to leave because you simply CANNOT be everywhere at once.

I've also had ranked games where this happens and now I'm not with friends in a call. I buy mobility boots. I run around the map with upgraded yellow trinket and drop wards to protect my laners. I buy and drop strategic pinks. I gank two lanes and try to get them snowballing or, if I'm lucky and getting fed, gank all three. And sometimes it's still not enough. As with all team games, you're not going to be able to carry 1v5 every time and those sorts of games are very frustrating as a jungler, especially when team members are expecting you to save them from THEIR own mistakes.

Let me come up with another imaginary scenario to counter yours: top lane gives up a level 2 first blood to the enemy laner, no junglers involved. Mid dives too aggressively a few seconds later, dies to the enemy laner. Bottom trades ADC for support. Since top's facing a Hecarim, someone difficult for me to gank, I focus on mid and bottom, scoring a flash mid and a kill for my ADC bot. The enemy jungler ganks top, gives a kill over to the enemy top laner. I donate my blue to mid, leave a pink in the area, gank bot again and get a kill for myself and one for my ADC at the cost of my ADC's life. Top dies again, mid gets ganked by the jungler (who went around the other side of my pink) and dies to their lane opponent. I go up top to put down a ward just as my top laner gets back to lane, Hecarim goes in on him, I gank because I'm there, my top laner dies and I'm unable to catch Hecarim to kill him. Bot lane both die to the enemy ADC. Mid lane wants to surrender at 20, top lane begs for "an actual gank," the ADC is ragging on the top lane, support, and me for having let him die. All of them want me to gank for them since I'm one of the only ones on the team with gold. In a situation like this, I did everything I could to enable my lanes, but it's a pretty good bet that this is lost (yes, it's early and will depend on the team comp but a lot of folks will simply give up here). So what was my mistake? Where should I take responsibility?

I'll take it as a favor if you don't assume that I'm a newbie jungler who's never bought a green ward, dies constantly, and doesn't know how to enable their team. I mained support in S1 and S2. I've played jungle in every season. I know when something is my fault, I know what my responsibilities are, and I know when a laner has dug themselves into a hole and it had nothing to do with me. I'm not omnipresent, I can't save everyone. Don't assume just because I hate it when all my lanes are failing that it's all my fault or that I could have done something more than I already did about it.

EvilRabbitt1 votes

Maybe I was unclear. I feel like I was because no one read the text wall. I didn't lose lane. I lost lane from enemy jungler- I beat the bajeezus out of the enemy mid laner, but the Sejunai camped my lane and bot while our jungler (politely nameless) farmed his chickens when I got ganked. Every time I got ganked, he was less than 10 seconds away (wolves, blue, or chickens- every time) and he never came to help. If I can wreck the enemy mid laner AND fend off the enemy jungler solo, then my jungler coming in from his camps immediately gives us an easy double kill.

tl:dr- I didn't lose lane 1v1. I lost lane from getting ganked 4 times. Top was aggrivated as well. Only bot was happy- even though he showed up very few times. The enemy Sej jungle was ripping bot to shreds and camping me with the occassional top lane dip. Our jungler was farming camps on a tank.

LOL Spammer1 votes

Getting ganked 4 times is not getting camped dude. Getting ganked like 10 times is being camped. E.g. My last 4 games in lane. Plus if you think you are getting camped then play really far back near your turret, let the lane push to you. As long as you are a ranged champ you shouldn't have a problem.

Thanks for the correction. It was a comparison of my junglers to enemy jungler. In correction exchange (I mean this politely, I have grammar correction addiction) e.g. is ergo and i.e. is in example. So ergo is when you want to say "this thing happened, and so this happened also". I.e. is what you did. =) Thanks for the correction, hate misusing terms. If I may ask, seeing as I'm heavily in the wrong it seems and I've learned that I will never be right in the jungler world (ignore my Rek'Sai game) can you explain what I seem to be missing?

The things that happened: Our jungler: Stayed in jungle (tank, cc heavy, no need to farm?) and just ate camps all day with the occassional assist to bot. Never showed mid or top. Joined 2 teamfights out of I believe 6 or 7. Both fights, he stayed behind me (the squishy, utility mid mage) and didn't engage at all. I got blown up both times because I thought he'd go in. Enemy jungler: Hit my lane and bot lane repeatedly (tank, cc heavy, no need to farm? too) and managed to snowball bot lane really heavily. I died once in the 4 hits. I: Decided to take chickens and wolves (blue when it spawned because I was a mage) since I saw myself putting it to better use as I was assisting my team and he was not.

Why am I wrong? Super confused.

Beanwater1 votes

Just by the way,

E.g. stands for exempli Gratia (Latin benevolently translated to mean "for example.") It is used to set off examples for something, not to sequence events.

I.e. stands for id est (literally: "it is", though Latin does not traditionally use prepositions without need, the "id" exists for emphasis. It's better translated as "that is." I think of this in a similar fashion to "this is to say...") This phrase is used for clarification/further explanation.

Ergo is just another word meaning therefore if my memory of high school serves me well.

Let's look at it the other way.

If Riot introduced a patch where laners LOST 30 gold each time they enter the jungle, would they enter the fucking jungle? Probably not, so why take the camps and commit exactly the same financial crime?

It's a disgrace.

Adrian Umbra2 votes

Because they're not the ones losing the gold, the jungler is. It's perfectly fine to gimp your teammates since you're the diamond smurf who's going to carry this game, right?

The reason I can't jungle any more is because every game I get into it seems like the ADC thinks he/she has a right to take out every jungle camp on their way back to their lane for "free gold", and then whines when I tax his/her lane. Most top laners I've played with are tame enough to ask before taking anything. Mid laners usually stay out of the jungle if river is warded for them to lane jump. Least that's how my jungle games usually go.

Maybe people should realize this. Taking jungle creeps from your jungle sets your team back overall, with a small boost to you.

Taking the ENEMY jungle mobs however, sets THEIR team back overall, with a small boost to you.

Sometimes playing jungle makes me sad. I hate it when every lane is feeding, the enemy jungler is stealing my camps, and then you end up getting blamed for it. God forbid if lanes actually go even for once.

Syn Zykan2 votes

I agree with this post up to a point. I play a lot of bruiser or tank jungles and so there comes a point where that 30 gold difference actually is still worth the carry, that is worth something (if you are 0/9/0 on twitch you aren't getting shit), getting it instead of me on Amumu. Usually that point is either when I am on 3 completed items (not counting boots) or when you are just shy of a huge powerspike (such as when corki would be finishing trinity force). If I am no where near that camp and it will be back up before I reach it, go ahead and take it. It lets it respawn at a higher level meaning I am less likely to have the xp penalty on the camp afterwards and I kinda appreciate that (if you don't fully clear the camp I will be very butthurt as you screw me over even more)

Also if you see an opportunity, try to take the enemy teams jungle first. Do not do this without vision or unless you are fed as hell and can 1 vs 2 minimum. Just mindlessly grabbing more farm can hurt your chances of winning, assess the farm you'd be taking. I know the solo que mentality is "I must carry to win" but carrying means more than just you being super strong, you have to make good decisions for the team overall as well.

At what stage in the game? Early game you usually have your top laner that starts wolves / wraiths and tp's top with a million potions, and occasionally your bot lane will start krugs / gromp, which is fine because it doesn't hurt your initial clear.

Mid game laners are usually too weak to take a camp without losing a lot of health. Even if they can, at that point your focus is more on warding / lane control.

Late game it's all about the carries, so let them have your camps and get more gold to scale up. You don't need it as much as them, ESPECIALLY when you're playing a tanky jungler.

I think most people on this board have this idea that jungling is just "take the jungle all game, never gank" when it's really the opposite of that. Clear your camps to keep the XP flowing, but near mid game your goal is primarily applying pressure, counter jungling, objective control, scuttler control, with camps as just something to fall back on with nothing to do.

no. i take the jungle most of the game, and still gank. but im still on a massive gold defecit as compared to laners. and when laners sit there and take my jungle farm because they pushed their lane too hard and don't want to risk dying, its obnoxious. its uncourteous, and it shows a general lack of respect for the guy who does THE MOST work on the team.

But junglers are screaming the shit out of themselves on the forums about a single camp being taken. lol.

Onegarion4 votes

Its one camp by the mid, top, and adc. Then they tend to give up buffs too which is essentially like the same thing since they lose about a full wave of gold to give you that buff and it only scales from there. Its never just one even if it starts that way. Especially because laners want to scream about the jungler taxing a creep or 2 after a successful gank, but act innocent when its then taking from someone else.

Kaokentake2 votes

as a diamond jungle main, let me share with you my secret jungle tactic.

When i jungle, i actually develop a system / path where i NONSTOP farm the jungle . And i dont gank . And i LITERALLY kill EVERY SINGLE jungle camp on respawn, as it spawns. And because i do this, my allies are UNABLE to take ANY jungle camps because they are always dead (and right when they respawn, im there to kill it)

i have noticed that by me designing a jungle strategy that ACTIVELY PREVENTS my laners from being able to take my jungle camps, i have noticed this MASSIVELY increases the chance that my laners will win lane. For some reason, almost all laners are too stupid to realize losing 50% of their health to kill 1 jungle camp is a bad idea. So by me KILLING ALL JUNGLE CAMPS ON RESPAWN, my teammates dont even have the chance to lose 50% of their health taking gromp, meaning they will always be forced to go in lane for farm, and because they didnt lose half their health taking a gromp on their way to lane, they usually always end up winning the lane because they arrive to lane at full health

i literally ONLY farm the jungle for 20 minutes, no ganks, with the goal of ACTIVELY STOPPING MY TEAMMATES FROM BEING ABLE to take a SINGLE jungle camp after 4 minutes. My only goal in the game is to MAKE SURE my allies can NEVER kill a jungle camp, because i kill them all on respawn. The result? all of my laners usually win lane, and i get tons of farm. By 20 minutes i am a god, then i walk out of the jungle and smoke the whole enemy team. easy game
