I miss having to play all five roles in Ranked...sort of

Back in the old days you needed to have at least 1-2 champions for every lane to play Ranked. Don't get me wrong - I do have favorite champions and lanes. But sometimes I liked having to play a random role because that's what my team needed. I feel like it was a nice skill to have - you're last pick with a jungle role and you're whole team is squishy? Time to whip out Amumu.

I feel like that sort of strategic flex picking is gone with new champ select. Most of us just choose our best/favorite champion regardless of team cohesion, counter picks, etc. Plus the 'Fill' choice is just another label for Support. There's really no way for me to randomly play all five roles unless I purposely choose it in the beginning. And why would I do that over my best role? When I don't normally jungle and certainly don't normally play Amumu?

For me, being "forced" into a not as familiar role and champion was part of the skill and fun - it added that random element in Ranked that tested out your skill as an overall League player - not just in one position with one champion. I can't complain that I'm able to play my best role 100% of the time, but I think it's a double edged sword...sometimes I wish it was just 90% of the time.

I always hated being forced into support. I don't even mind playing support, but the feeling of just being shoved into it rubbed me the wrong way.

I didn't really mind because it usually meant I was last pick and could counter pick the enemy. There's a certain satisfaction seeing the enemy pick Nidalee and Cait and you go with Braum >=)

Picking a jungler that suits your team is just playing jungle normally, the situation you described is no different from queuing up as the jungler.

In fact, that situation is more common in the current system because the jungler may actually end up in last pick whereas last season your last pick would be support most of the time.

Always pick fill! I know it usually means support but you never know!

A friend of mine were in a lobby together where I picked mid/top.

He picked support/fill.

He got mid.

I got salty.
