Ahri's Original Vision

Wînter Fox··32 votes·14,801 views

{quoted} Ahri was never intended to be an Assassin. She was always intended to be a kite Mage.

Behind all the changes that's being made to Ahri right now, this quote seems to be the driving force behind them. It's all over G&B in the 100+ Ahri threads. It's officially restated by Riot in the 5.2 patch notes. It's even being reinforced with today's PBE changes with lower damage combined with lower cooldowns and higher mana costs. But is this really the case? Was she always intended to have playstyle of a safe, mobile, poke style Mage - that is, until the pros discovered DFG and Riot's revision forced an Assassin style on her? Or was she really an Assassin and it just took a while to find her most optimal build - that is, until DFG's recent removal and Riot's revision forced a Mage style on her? To answer this question once and for all let's take a look back in time to when we got the first insight on her gameplay and see what the real story is behind her 'Original Vision'- I think at the least we'll find out Ahri's role was always, dare I say...hard to pin down.

December 6th, 2011 Morello's Mechanics Preview - Ahri, the Nine-Tailed Fox

  • Greeting Summoners!

  • Back in the end of september, we announced The Nine Tails Fox much to the excitment of our community. Well the time has finally come and after much anticipation, we wanted to reveal the gameplay style for Ahri, the Nine-Tailed Fox.

  • Ahri’s gameplay style revolves around mobility and managing position to aim her spells. When played properly, Ahri darts around teamfights, picking off wounded stragglers and harrying soft enemies.

  • This is largely accomplished through her ultimate, which allows her to dash multiple times before going on cooldown. Ahri can either use all three quickly to chase, burst, or escape, or she can spread out their uses to keep enemies guessing and juke around the battlefield. Combining this with her high magic damage and her Seduction ability to lock enemies down, she can strike from unexpected angles or bait enemies into overcommitting to disadvantageous situations.

  • Ahri’s major gameplay decisions are based on her assessment of risk/reward. Her burst is high, but must be in short range to maximize it. This creates a dynamic that requires her to endanger herself to reach full potential. Play it safe and have more light damage, or commit and go for the kill? Use your dash for damage, or save it for escape? The choices are constant with these opposed strengths and weaknesses.

  • Her kit is really designed to appeal towards opportunistic players who prefer characters with a lot of action, and especially players that like to lull enemies into overconfidence, only to capitalize and punish them. Ahri’s dangerous, seductive nature is something we’re happy to deliver for players who like to toy with their enemies before destroying them.

These second and second to last paragraphs from three years ago really highlight how Morello saw Ahri's gameplay - she can and does stay back, play safe, escape, and poke with her skillshots- but to reach full damage potential she needs to risk going in for the kill. The risk/reward factor sounds like he may be leaning towards an Assassin-ish playstyle, however Morello's next quote...

{quoted} Quote: Originally Posted by Bluey111 oh look, akali with 9 tails

may prove otherwise. Morello's sarcasm aside, we can see here he makes a clear distinction between Ahri and Akali - Ahri is more squishy and actually has CC compared to a "stealth-juking vamp assassin". But does this mean Ahri is not an Assassin at all without stealth-juking? Or is she a squishier, CC version of an Assassin? Maybe we should look to when she was actually released for more insight.

December 14th, 2011 Phreak: Ahri's Champion Spotlight

  • 0.14: Ahri is a mobile Mage Assassin, utilizing skill-shots, dashes, and clever positioning, Ahri excels at taking out single targets and disrupting the enemy team

  • 3.04: Our opponents catch us near Baron. I open up on Skarner because I can't assassinate anyone with so many crowd-control effects on the enemy team. We're able to kill him rather quickly, as I use Spirit Rush not to dive on to enemy champions, but to damage the surrounding enemies: Skarner and Singed. Once Skarner falls I look to take out squisher targets like Annie, landing Charm and Fox fire to pick up the kill.

  • 4.19: It's important to note that landing skillshots is extremely vital when playing Ahri.

  • Phreak's final build: item 3116item 3020item 3089item 3152item 3135 item 3100

Here is where we got the first real look at the gameplay Riot intended for Ahri, recommended build and all. From everything in the spotlight it's very clear Phreak plays her just how he stated 14 seconds into the video - as equally a Mage and an Assassin. He focuses on high AP all around, Lichbane for all ins, and RoA/Rylai's for survivability/kiting. Of course this is Phreak 'tons of damage' circa 2011 we're talking about - I'm sure not too many would be convinced that a Spotlight would have the proper playstyle. Plus, after this there's a slew of changes to her ratios, her Charm, her items, DFG, etc. and the vision gets a bit murky. So let's take it one step further - to one person who would really know what the true 'Original Vision' of Ahri really is - the creator himself: Colt 'Ezreal' Hallam.

August 15th, 2014 Twitter - @RiotEzreal

Probably the single most impressive Ahri video I have ever seen! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqXWjBCmNqM … It makes a designer proud...

If the creator of the champion himself points out a video that makes him proud, it must contain none other than his 'Original Vision'. And if you watch the video what does it contain? Well...everything. Mobility, kiting, assassinations, poking, all-ins, escapes - this video very literally represents Ahri's full potential and weaves in and out of combat fast and flawlessly. If this video and Ezreal's comment shows me anything it's that Ahri was never meant to just be a Mage or just be an Assassin - it was to use her superior mobility to weave in and out of both styles.

So what do you think, G&B and Riot? Has this 3 year trip down memory lane reminded you of what Ahri was always intended to be?

Nice post. Some additional context below on our thoughts on Ahri, both now and in the past.

  • The original intent with Ahri was to create a mage with strong (windowed) mobility and single target pick potential. That does result in a mage with assassin like elements, goal was to put her in a spot that was mage first, assassin second (in contrast with Le Blanc who's more assassin overall).
  • The idea was that Ahri would have longer combat/kill times than assassins. Less bursting you down in a second from full if she caught you out of position, more having to make a multiple passes or poke you a bit first (hence the multiple dash ultimate and Q with decent poke potential).
  • While understanding original intent behind something's extremely valuable we don't feel initial vision's something that's sacred and shouldn't be challenged. If a different approach seems more beneficial overall it's worth looking at. That mentality lead us to make some changes to Ahri a year or two ago that pushed her into more of an assassin role (the charm damage amp primarily).
  • Our conclusion, after seeing those assassin changes play out, is that we were wrong there and that going back to a more extended combat pattern's best for Ahri (particularly in terms of the playstyle her ult's multi cast best matches).

Wait...

Then shouldn't her R be a multi-use Kassadin/Akali-like dash rather than constrained to a set of 3 dashes then?

SmokingPuffin6 votes

I seem to remember that a Rioter said they were originally testing an ult with charges that built up over time. They found the 3 charges in 10 seconds version to be both healthier for the game and more fun to play with than the chargey one.

Main problem with the 3 charges ult -- it's not a targeted spell like Akali's, so Ahri would be able to always and forever keep a charge for safety. With the live design, there's a window of vulnerability for Ahri after she uses ult.

Auryiel1 votes

It was actually 2 charges and even then it was considerably stronger than the current version because of the safety she gained from it

Personally, I love how Ahri's ulti currently works (well except for the fact that it goes on CD once all charges are spent, instead of when cast)

He said the mobility was intended to be windowed. Meaning it wouldn't make sense for it to be available all the time.

Yes, I totally agree. I was a strong proponent of the original vision and started the thread with math when the charm damage amp changes rolled out.

I had also tested the initial changes on the PBE, and while I did say I liked them, I also noted that Ahri may be too strong with CDR. She is too spam happy, and her windows of mobility are too close in between.

In the live version, if you build Morellonomicon first, her ultimate is always up when its needed.

I agree with the nerfs that are currently being shipped out onto the PBE, but I think the deeper rooted issue is the strength of Morellonomicon on the current Ahri. Mana costs are effective for reducing spam, but don't address the deeper of issue of Ahri having to spam to be strong.

I currently think that there needs to be more punishment for building CDR and more benefits for building flat AP.

Completely disagree. Frankly this is the kind of sentiment that has destroyed mage style champions for far to long and allows resourcesless champions to be as strong as they are. Your early and mid game will always be dwarfed in comparison to resourceless champions until you can get you hands on items like Morellonomicon.

Some mages like to spam, and others should have the ability to use skills in moderation while hitting hard. Anivia and Brand are mages that fall into the latter, while Orianna and Syndra fall into the former. What you're proposing is that all mages should simply spam when the idea of a mage is someone that puts out damage in cooldowns.

If we want to address resourceless champions, we should make an effort to attach more flat mana and mana regeneration to flat AP and special abilities instead of CDR.

And yet they Mages have the largest itemization pool out of any other style of champion. Which too is a huge problem. And I think ahri does fit in the the latter of the mages, such as ori and syndra

In the past, CDR granted her the ability to use her ultimate on a shorter cooldown as its primary mobility option. With the Q change, CDR makes her too safe by granting Q on a shorter cooldown. This interaction with CDR is what makes Ahri quite obnoxious at the moment.

I do not see why not attach it to her Fox fire. Rather her Q. By doing this, it places it on a longer CDR item, and its on the UNSAFE spell.

It seems to me like such a hero would be utterly out of place in the current metagame. There's just no time in the average game when you have one person chasing you around, or even a team chasing you around, where you can turn it to your advantage. Ducking in and out of a fight doing some damage just isn't good enough.

Pika3103 votes

That's nice and all, but Riot also promised that she would be compensated for DFG's removal. Which you did not do. Broken promise = lying to the players.

That aside, these standalone changes that are completely non-sequitur to DFG's removal reduced her damage output to the lowest it has ever been in the entirety of her existence. Despite this, you want to lower her damage even further in 5.3? Why?

Is this going to become a pattern of nerfing her every other patch, much the same way Riot does to Sona? Who also is getting more nerfs in 5.3 as well.

LeriN1 votes

I`m sorry for bad english, but I will try to explain my point of view. Last nerf changes Ahri whole build composition, because she will have huge problems with mana for example now you build item 3165, item 3020, item 3089, item 3157, item 3135 and item 3116 and you have all you need for Assassin new build should be something like this item 3027 or item 3003, item 3158, item 3089 item 3157 item 3135 and item 3116 this items .... which is stuped because you loose colldown and magic penetration, you have more tanky champion and Ahri is definetly not a tank W changes are awful to nurf range is makes even more hard to had whole combo dmg

SmokingPuffin8 votes

Ahri is supposed to be a primary: mage, secondary: assassin. That is, a mage that has some assassin elements. Compare Irelia, who is a primary: fighter, secondary: assassin.

From a design perspective, the idea is that Ahri is good at being opportunistic. She kites opponents, putting easy but relatively light damage on, until she sees an opportunity to go for a burst finisher on a key target.

Done257 votes

Assassins are high mobility characters that use their speed to stike at otherwise safe but valuable targets.

Guess what miss triple dash Mage has lots of?

(Hint: It's mobility!)

Ahri has always been, and still is, a Mage Assassin like LeBlanc.

Knight SoIaire 4 votes

lb is a brute burst mage not an assasin she is still considered one because riots definition of assasin has evolved before assasins were guys who just oneshotted carries and that was leblanc

but now assasin are guys who wait for a proper spot to fully commit to a kill and thats ahri (lb is still just a brute burst, but she isnt as mobile as she used to be when she needs to use her w to burst)

Done252 votes

She has up to two bi-directional long range dashes and you say she's not an Assassin?

If you want "brute burst" go look at Veigar or Brand.

5G8Nri0B544 votes

No, LB is a full-on Assassin, with mage as a minor secondary role. Ahri is the reverse, primarily a Mage, with a small hint of an Assassin.

"Brute Burst" are champions like Veigar, Annie, and Malzahar.

and lb, you cant deny that all she does is get in yo face and 100 to 0 you

i didnt call our lb an assasin because the way that our current game stays forces her to use her w for dmg quite often which reduces her mobility to popping back where she started and waiting for cooldowns

One thing a lot of people forget. Her lore screams assassin. Riot has been trying to force a mage role on her since her release even though her lore says otherwise. I'm sorry but what kind of temptress sits that and takes her sweet time to lure you in. Her entire lore is assassin. Her kit leans towards assassin heavily even without the damage amp. Why? Because of charm. Charm forces you to take damage making her an assassin. Meanwhile she spams Q and W and that somehow makes her a mage.

Riot's goal unfortunately does not fit the champion they made. Until they realize this and push her a bit further back towards assassin only, she will continue to dominate due to an overloaded mobility kit that was pretty mobile before they gave her even more. She's even less fun to play against now as she has 5 ways to get away in her kit. Her 3 ult charges, charm, and Q. In fact she is given incentive for using it to run. She gets a longer version of the speed boost because its in the air longer.

Her kit may have been toxic before but I mean Riot could have at least let the DFG dust settle before they went after her assassin style. Because adding more utility to her kit was the wrong way to go for taking away damage amp.

If they truly wanted a mobile mage, they would of left her the way she was but lower the cds of her spells save charm. Why? She lost an extra 20% damage amp as well as damage from dfg. Reducing her CDs slightly and going after her mana costs would of made her a mage. Instead they gave her mobility on her poke tool so she is now a monster to even touch. She's near uncatchable unless you can burst her after a single CC move.

I mean S3 Ahri was strong and average triples in well picked fights but now its rare to see Ahri go higher than a double unless she is fed.

Her entire lore would scream assassin if she hadnt stopped killing humans for their souls out of guilty.

Seriously, it is like people never read the rest of her lore -_-

Anyway, she has always been a Mage-Assassin. She can burst and she can escape. Everyone knows that.

Ahri is stupidly broken atm, btw.

Yay for another wall of text for Ahri.

You should probably L2thirdgradereadingcomprehension before you try to tell anyone to make an inference. Not only does Ahri not need to eat life essence to live (she was feeding on people to become a true human) but her lore also implies she stopped killing out of guilt so strongly that it all but straight up says it.

... as she took more lives, a strange sense of regret began to well within her. She had reservations about actions which never troubled her as a fox. She realized that she could not overcome the pangs of her evolving morality. In search of a solution, Ahri found the Institute of War, home of the most gifted mages on Runeterra. They offered her a chance to attain her humanity without further harm through service in the League of Legends.

SEKAI2 votes

She was originally made as a kite/mobile mage, so her E didn't originally had damage amplification until V3.13.

It doesn't take more than 10 seconds to do a little fact check.

The post is too long for my taste though, sorry I only skimmed parts of it.

SouL1ess4 votes

Why does a damage amplification automatically say that said champion is an assassin?

Damage amplifications usually just means you deal shit damage without it. Riot nerfs every champion that has a damage amplificaiton until they must have that damage amplification to be equal footing with other champions. It's not something to be proud of on your kit, and it certainly didn't say that you are an assassin (and imply that you burst faster and better than other champions).

Ahri having a damage amplification mechanic just means her mage playstyle is nerfed in addition to her assassination playstyle being nerfed. She always had both assassin and mage traits; as a mage, she is designed for combat disruption (a.k.a. outplaying) and then picking off targets that are not in condition to deal with her anymore. Her assassin trait is a secondary trait shared with all mages when fed (being able to kill something fast).

Krys Star2 votes

Watch out. Morello's going to get high and mighty and speak to you condescendingly, and ridicule you. He doesn't like to be proven wrong.

In all seriousness, Riot's become a power-hungry company now. Pretty much around the time season 3 ended/season 4 started was when it became about power and money. They don't care what their champion's identity are anymore. Look at Cassiopeia, Olaf, Kassadin, Evelynn, Skarner, Tristana ( her new voice over no longer reprents who she is. Now it just sounds like a pleasant voice with the wrong personality/tone recording random lines from Jinx and other champs' persona ). Don't get me wrong, Tristana's voice is nice on the ears and the voice actress is funny and adorable! But she doesn't bring out the explosion-obsessed crazed-yordle-maniac that she once was. Now she just sounds like a refined lady of war. =\

5G8Nri0B542 votes

I'm not sure why you highlighted Phreak's use of assassinate as a verb and his his mention that you must land her skillshots to be effective. For the former, I've even seen it use like that for supports during the LCS and such. For the latter...that's the point of skillshots.

Also, the current Ahri does need to get in pretty close to do maximum damage, since her R and W comprises a decent chunk of her damage, and it's something you need to get into pretty close range to get off.

But in the end, yeah she's supposed to be a Mage with soft hints of an assassin, much like Orianna is a mage with hints of a Support.** And this is what she's been reverted back to.** DFGassassin Ahri was a full-on Assassin.

Put this in contrast to say...Leblanc and Katarina . Those two are PRIMARILY Assassins, and hints of a mage.

Wînter Fox1 votes

You're saying she's a Mage with hints of an Assassin because that's your personal preference. Some will say she's an Assassin with hint of a Mage because that's their personal preference.

Either way I'm giving you proof that she was created to be both equally from the beginning. If you want to prove me wrong then do it using facts and statements from her creators.

And W and R is 50% of her kit, which means 50% of her job is about getting in close range. This is more similar to Akali Leblanc Katarina than it is to Lux BrandXerath

junglerboy161 votes

Based on what evidence you have put forward and a lot of what Riot has been saying recently, I think where they want her to go is more of a mobile skirmishing mage who takes advantage of opportunities to assassinate low health targets after poking them down. She is supposed to be roughly a halfway between the Akali's and the Xeraths of the game, like you said, almost in the same way as gnar now is a combination of kiting and poke that shifts to hard all in lockdown engage.

To simplify, an assassin typically picks one target, kills the target immediately by blowing all his skills, then runs to the back of the team.

Mages usually can do more sustained damage in areas of effect and can generally stay waaaaay farther away from a teamfight. Assassins are more risky because they have to throw themselves in the middle of everyone.

As someone who played her after release. I say that she was not an assassin.

Her originally playstyle was poke someone to the level where she could jump you with her ulti and kill you. So if you take this part of her playstyle as an assassin thing, then yes, she was somewhere between amge and assassin.

Though I would not call her assassin then. Because these where times where assassin were not so popular or numerous, so for players then she was just a mage.

Sad there isn't an option for "both poke mage and assassin" here.

That's what he said "Play it safe and have more light damage (As poke mage), or commit and go for the kill (Assassin)? "

She was meant to be played as both, but the release of DFG completly made her onesided. I remember, when DFG was released, she was insanly broken. So then nerfed her based damage and tankyness, but added some base ratios.

Her intended role is a mage, but as a mobility-focused mage that played like a hybrid of a mage/assassin.

However, when people started using DFG on her, which made her assassin role OP, Riot had to balance her around her having DFG, and had to emphasize her assassin traits over her mage traits, because if they tried to emphasize her mage traits more, then she would have needed to have her damage nerfed beyond even what live Ahri currently has.
