Tiny QoL buff for Gnar? (Hulk Inspired)

ValyrianBlade··51 votes·2,744 views

This is a Hulk-inspired QoL buff that I think would be cool and appropriate on Gnar.

He's not in dire need of a buff, but at under a 49% win rate I don't see how this could cause any problems on him:

If Bruce Banner would have died, the Hulk comes out and survives, right?

So if Mini Gnar has FULL rage and takes what would have been lethal damage, Mega Gnar should automatically proc and save him (still takes the full amount of the damage, so if Mega Gnar would have died too he's dead).

The player can do this anyways - just tap your never-on-cooldown W and you turn Mega Gnar. Gnar already has to manage a lot more than most champions though, so I don't think making this automatic would be a problem. It also leaves his W off of cooldown when he needs it most (almost dead as Mega Gnar).

It would only apply when Mini Gnar has full rage. Not 90, not 99, only at full rage. So only when using an ability would have turned him Mega anyways. (e.g. you're waiting a second to get your e cooldown to bounce to an enemy before using W and take lethal damage, now you would turn Mega [so you can't bounce anymore too] but you survive the damage at low health).

That is not QOL.

Though it is reasonable.

What exactly makes something a QoL buff?

I figured it was something you can do anyways, but would not require the player to blow a cooldown and actively do it.

Either way, as you said it's reasonable. Also just seems to be something that fits his character and would make the player feel better in the interaction.

A QOL buff is a buff that makes no changes to the mechanics or numbers of a champion, but still improves it.

For example, when they add range indicators to a spell (IE Anivia, Twitch) , that is QOL.

Got it, thanks :)

I agree, mostly because it makes sense, it's not saying 'if Gnar would take lethal damage in mini-Gnar form and the damage would have given him 100 rage, he transforms' because that would be a notable buff. Instead, it's now saying 'after reaching 100 rage, Gnar turns into Mega-Gnar after: using an ability, waiting five seconds, or taking otherwise lethal damage.

The only question is this: does the damage Gnar receives at that point take into account Mini-Gnar's stats or Mega-Gnar stats?

Slamurai Jack11 votes

Fuck no. CC locking and killing a Gnar without letting him transform is a huge part of his counterplay. Implement this change and next thing you know, Tahm's E will auto activate when he's about to die too.

Dealth7 votes

This isn't QOL, it's a direct buff. Players should be rewarded for killing gnar while he is small.

ValyrianBlade4 votes

They're not "killing him while he's small" if he has full rage though. He's supposed to go Mega at full rage. He just hasn't because he doesn't have an ability up. E.g. He's mashing his on-cooldown e because he wants to use the jump. He's not looking to use Wallop, but could use it to turn mega during that instant.

A player shouldn't have to use a skill he doesn't want to use in order to get the transformation he wants/needs.

SaltyKracka2 votes

Why shouldn't he?

ValyrianBlade3 votes

Because Gnar's meant to require control over when you get to full rage to turn mega at the right time (as said in his champion release). They never said anything about having the right cooldown available at that moment.

If they don't want to make it automatic, they should at least make it something that you can click "go mega now", but that would require an extra button and for some reason that doesn't appear to be possible.

SaltyKracka3 votes

...Why shouldn't a Gnar who wants to survive have to use his (as you so clearly state) permanently-off-cooldown W?

ValyrianBlade5 votes

Because the purpose of his W is not to transform him in to Mega.

The purpose of his W is to give him CC when in Mega form. Gnar needs to stop in order to charge up his W. That stationary action more often than not will result in him dying anyways. Damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't sort of thing. If Q and E are on CD, a full rage Gnar has no way to transform that doesn't result in him standing still for a period of time. Something that's very dangerous at low health.

I'm not asking for him to transform prematurely. He's built 100 rage, he's earned that transform. The game is only waiting to give the player a notice that he's ready to transform and the option to confirm he wants it by doing it immediately with a skill. Thing is, if your alternative is death you trivially want to transform, so it shouldn't need the confirmation in this case and should just do it.

Not to mention the whole "fits thematically" and "Gnar has under a 49% win rate so it won't break him" things.

InsanitysTheName1 votes

Honestly I don't think he needs more complexity to his kit. Using his w to transform is something all good gnar players know. If they were to buff him they should just increase his q dmg.

Alamand3 votes

But op isn't asking for any damage buffs. They just want to alter how his passive can work

InsanitysTheName1 votes

Yeah I was kinda trying to imply that this is a buff to his kit and while it's not a bad idea, Riot would rather just change some numbers if he needed help.

My Waifu Vanilla2 votes

W also has a cast time so in this situation the Gnar would have probably still died if he used W to transform.

SaltyKracka1 votes

I'm still not sure why this is supposed to be a bad thing.

BroLane6 votes

Gnar doesn't need buffs.

ValyrianBlade1 votes

Pretty sure the first line of my second paragraph states this... but as I also stated this would be really small and it's not like he's at a 52%+ win rate and needs nerfs. Win rates aren't everything, but overall Gnar compared to most champions is slightly on the weaker side.

It would have minimal impacts in most cases, but would make playing him feel better.

I agree that he doesn't NEED buffs (like Rumble probably does), but it's not like this would hurt any other champion in the game. It would not change the gameplay in any of his matchups...

Bladerunner77773 votes

No, why does he need to be made easier?

There's nothing more satisfying than getting a clutch ult to save your life in a duel. This just takes away more thought than necessary

Matezoide3 votes

How is this a tiny QoL buff?

WarlordTim2 votes

Interesting Idea. that would definitely be neat to see.

Robbit Mang2 votes

Haha I'd love this, I've died countless times with full rage while mashing a spell that was on cooldown.

Doubt they'd do it though tbh

Actually xPeke1 votes

You mean the 0 second cooldown W?

Robbit Mang1 votes

oh yeah i forgot you could do that.

im a pretty bad gnar player

Bladerunner77773 votes

wat

W will always be off cooldown and R is almost always off cooldown when transforming. You must be mashing the wrong keys

MrSlowDie2 votes

well, you know, I don't see janna automatically shield herself or zilean automatically ult himself. So, no

Reflect Stratos3 votes

Those can have a massive affect, such as healing the entire team or reviving a vital carry. Mega gnar only effects Gnar himself. If the gnar has reached full rage, why shouldn't he be able to transform? He earned it. W has a cast time as mega, so if the only option is dying doing nothing or dying trying to cast w, I think this would be a great change. And hey, if you stun locked him properly as mini and did enough lethal damage, he'll die anyway.

FantasySniper2 votes

This actually makes sense, and I fully support it.

But watch Riot respond with "it takes away a play-making oppurtunity that seperates the good Gnars from the great Gnars."

ModAcademy Kayn1 votes

I feel that Gnar should be punished for wasting his abilities, so i'd disagree with him turning Mega in the case of him reaching 0 HP, when his rage is full.

ValyrianBlade1 votes

The point is the player doesn't want to waste an ability to use a part of his kit. I don't follow your reasoning.

ModAcademy Kayn1 votes

You don't have to waste an ability to access a part of his kit. You can wait the few seconds it takes to go Mega or you can not use your W seconds before you go in, wanting to become Mega Gnar.

The entire reason Mini Gnar is there, is to have a time to take advantage of him not having his big cc. So, if he wastes his abilities, I should be able to kill before he turns Mega. I don't want to have Gnar's weakspot given less time to be taken advantage of because he just barely survived long enough to reach 100 Rage, but didn't have an ability to activate it because I forced him to use those abilities to stay alive in Mini Form.

IN SHORT, if Mini Form is forced to use his W to stay alive in Mini Form, then he shouldn't be given a free pass for just getting to 100 Rage, and failed to have W up. Gnar is forced to play around his Mini Form, not the other way around.

A Loyal Support1 votes

eh, this could be a buff or a nerf, depending on your situation. imagive you're about to escape from vayne and she hits you, leaving you with almost no HP. you turn into mega gnar and start walking slow as hell. It's gg for you. Or if you're in a ranged duel, and you need 1 more hit to kill your opponent, but they manage to almost kill you, and you turn mega gnar. you lost your final AA or Q that you couldve used to win, and you die.

ValyrianBlade1 votes

It's a flat buff, because it only happens if you would have died.

Even in the case where you can't escape, the change is merely from "die now" to "die shortly thereafter".

BakedLotion1 votes

but that'll make him have an instant +300 hp everytime he's boutta die.

ValyrianBlade3 votes

No, ONLY when he's at 100 rage. I.e. ONLY when he could say, press W and turn Mega anyways. Only difference is he'd not have to stand still and blow a cooldown he might not want to use to go mega when he obviously wants to.

I really like the idea

I think I can get behind this because of the 100% Rage restriction. Any less (even 99%) and it'd probably be OP.

ValyrianBlade1 votes

Exactly my thought. At 100 rage he's earned the transform. Any less and all the complaints that I'm getting anyways are actually valid. With the current idea, they're frankly not - it's just players hating.

Midder Scray1 votes

I think Gnar's fine where he's at. Killing Gnar before he transforms is a major part of counterplaying him, so that would kinda defeat the purpose

There's been so many times where I was just about to go ham on the entire enemy team and right when I hit full rage and start mashing W, I'm dead. But that's fair

ValyrianBlade1 votes

Killing him BEFORE he gets to 100 rage is the same counterplay, just only marginally harder.

It doesn't change the playstyle, only lets Gnar players get what they've earned if they're about to die at 100 rage.

GrReaper961 votes

How about instead we can control gnars transformation at rank 3

ValyrianBlade2 votes

I feel like that would be OP...

Going Mega whenever you want, and reverting when you want, would likely make Gnar one of the strongest scaling champions in the game... The real counterplay to Gnar is to get close to him when he's little and to stay away when he's big. If he has control over the transformation then whichever spot you're in is wrong...

GrReaper961 votes

No no i mean more like a Shyvana kinda thing where at full rage when u press R only then the 10 sec countdown begins. Not like Nidalee that can change at will

NICE TRY BALANCE TEAM

ValyrianBlade2 votes

ONLY when he's at 100 rage, or in other words could get that health anyways by using w or r.

It's not free health, it's health he's earned by virtue of getting to 100 rage for the transform and could access otherwise.

The buff is that he doesn't have to blow a w cooldown and stand still while he charges for wallop when he doesn't want to wallop but just wants to transform because otherwise he's dead.

It's nothing about making gnar feel worse for enemy champs. It's about removing an incredibly clunky part of him and replacing it with something thematically appropriate. That on a champion who's clearly not an OP champ right now.

FluxBound1 votes

I fell like it wouldnt be a tiny buff. When you say it leaves his W off cooldown, that is already a huge buff. It would also be a shield if he's stunned and it still goes off. And then coming from a Gnar main, I will throw my computer out the window if I try to E bounce into the enemy team but I just transformed so I just went halfway.

ValyrianBlade1 votes

Your first argument makes sense (it could be a bigger buff than I see it, say if he's stunned) but at the same time I still don't think it's anywhere near being too big to not fit for him.

The second doesn't because it would ONLY happen if you would have died. So why would you be mad over wasting a jump in big form when your alternative was death?
