Leona vs. Braum ; A "problematic" statistic

Dominick Destine··1 votes·1,680 views

Leona and Braum are effectively polar opposites of each other both in theme and gameplay style. Where Braum is male and Leona is female, they are also representing somewhat opposite elements with Braum as Cold and Leona as Hot.

More importantly; Braum is a defensive support intended to "Peel" for his ADC. Leona is an offensive support intended to "Dive" and "Lockdown" the enemy ADC.

Theoretically, both of these styles should be equally viable, but in practice, Female Lion has a small but significantly higher win rate than Braum... last week it was a difference of about 4% win rate, today it is decreased to about 1.5% http://champion.gg/champion/Leona http://champion.gg/champion/Braum

Typically, Leona will lord over Braum in win rate regardless of the patch, giving the offensive support a greater viability than the defensive support. Now let me clarify; I like Female Lion a lot more than Braum ... but I "feel" as if I should be more drawn to Braum.

Except I have had much better luck with Female Lion, leading me to believe that Braum is inferior to Leona. Is this the case? the statistics seem to back this conclusion up.

Thoughts on? Female Lion overpowered? Neuter her? Buff Braum?

Leona wins more than Braum. They have similar pick rates. They are opposite play styles and concepts. Does this mean Leona is better than Braum? stats indicate this to be so.

If they have opposite play styles and concepts then their strengths and weaknesses become more or less relevant depending on the circumstances surrounding a match (i.e. braum is better with a champ with a weak early game who just wants to sit and farm, leona is better with an aggressive and mobile champ who wants to start getting kills right out of the gate) thus comparing their strength through winrate is a mostly fruitless task since it doesn't matter how strong leona is when kog'maw still just wants to sit and cs safely with a braum rather than try to charge in with a leona.

Your argument is flimsy. What matters are the statistics.

Ultimately you want to win and if Braum leads to loss more often, then Female Lion is a superior pick. Leona is better.

You actually believe team synergy and counterpicking don't matter in this game?

Leona is better right now because games are shorter and more aggressive, favoring her playstyle. When the wind shifts, so will the stats. Stick with Leo for now, but as games lengthen, look to Braum.

Statistics are only useful if you understand what created them.

I think it's the same as in the case of Sona and Lee.

Lee is an easy champion to play, many people play him, yet his winrate is insanely low. Because people don't understand how to play him.

Sona is a difficult champion to play, not many people play her due to her terrible early and even worse late. So the people that play her tend to be experienced in her kit.

Just replace Lee with Leona, and Sona with Braum. Might have to change out a few arguments here and there. But you get the general idea.

Oh please, you can't honestly tell me you have trouble juking with Lee. He's basically starter fodder. Anyone who starts the game and wants to learn how to fire of skill shots, Lee's you're best starter bet.

Lee isn't hard to play.. Get the right items, right masteries, and right runes and you'll dominate. Sorry to burst your bubble, but no, you're not a pro for playing Lee.

That's correct.

Lee is arguably the most forgiving champion with lowest skill cap. If you royally screw up, you have multiple escape mechanisms on a low cooldown... and you are manaless, with better scaling than 90% of the cast of characters and extremely high base stats.

Lee is a very easy character to play because of how absurdly forgiving his gameplay is.
