"HOLY SHIT I DIDN'T GET THE ROLE I WANT, FK U RIUOT THIS GAM SUHX"

Jesus christ the entitlement of these kids is unbelievable. I know that sometimes you get a role you really don't know how to play, in those that's unfortunate, but you should at least play to the best of your ability rather than spaz out that you didn't get your way that one time.

EDIT: For example, I am a terrible ADC player, I had like a 20% win rate on Caitlyn last season, but that's not because I was trolling, it was because I legitimately almost never play ADC.

I did my best, it's just that my best was garbage.... I'm a jungler/support/mid , not an ADC. But therein lies the difference, I TRIED my best and failed. This is not the same as just saying "Fuck it, we're going to lose anyway".

It's not really entitlement, you can only realistically master one maybe potentially two roles at most. Sure you can be competent at all of them however that's not good enough when you start facing people who main those roles because they are going to destroy you everytime.

That's the problem auto-fill is bringing to the game right now, players aren't just being auto-filled as Support, I've been auto-filled into probably every role since they added it to all ELO's. That doesn't mean I can't play every role, but when someone gets auto-filled ADC and they are matched against someone who actually mains ADC it's most likely the least fun time you're ever going to have in your life.

No one is asking you to "Master" anything, the argument is that even if you get autofilled, you should play to the best of your abilities (in ranked) because you won't always get the role you want. You won't always get what you want, period.

That's not a reason to spaz out.... again, we used to adjust to whatever role we had to take and did the best we could. I suck at ADC but I can play ADC. I wouldn't troll I was autofilled ADC.

i wish riot would make up their mind about team positions. if they're going to label positions based on lanes then they should stick with that 100% throwing support in there is dumb. if they're going to do it by roles then they need to get rid of the lane names and list 5 roles. im tired of getting yelled at for wanting to be a mage in bottom lane.

...im tired of getting yelled at for wanting to be a mage in bottom lane.

To be fair, the role, itself, doesn't necessarily say that you have to be an AD carry. Hell, it doesn't even state that you have to be a Marksman, either. The role is simply labeled "Bot". In my opinion, that just means you're playing in the role of 'Bot Lane', rather than the role of "Marksman" or "AD Carry".

EDIT: Same goes for the Support role. The role simply says you're playing the role of a "Support". It doesn't outright state that you have to be a 'Support Champion', it just says you're playing as a "Support" for the "Bot Lane" role. So, in my eyes, so long as you're "Supporting" your "Bot Laner", the Champion(s) you pick shouldn't matter.

BLACK REALM GOD4 votes

it would be so easy to agree with you if it wasnt for the fact that support is a double meaning in and of itself - which is where the argument arises.

personally i agree with you, however, and i wish more people would as well.

Tentacle Advisor1 votes

The only problem I see, in regards to this whole "Support" issue, is that my view of the role is a way different than the average League player.

In every game I've ever played (literally every single one) that had a Support "class" and/or "role", I played it. I main'd it. Support has always been my favorite part of any game. I have always enjoyed the idea of being the person who takes care of their teammates, when they needed 'heals' or 'buffs/debuffs'. This is mainly due to the fact that I have never been good/great with carry-centric roles (in any game). Give me a carry role and I fall flat on my face. Give me the role of Support, and the team will be fine, no matter what.

With League, however, the Support role is seen too much as a Champion-specific role, rather than a Mechanical/Mentality-specific role. The Support role should simply be about keeping your allies in good shape, whether that be through heals, shields, buffs, debuffs, etc. Hell, even CC (no matter how effective), from Leona's Zenith Blade, to Lulu's Glitterlance, count towads this, since they keep your team safe (or, at most, somewhat protected). Basically, so long as you keep your allies from dying, it shouldn't matter what champ you play in the Support role.

I never understood, nor will I ever understand, why so many players choose not to see it this way.

BLACK REALM GOD2 votes

support is a lot more fun when you realize the potential for supporting by seeing it as a tactic and not a limited number of champions.

i have a few roles i like to play in video games, but my favorite version of support is misdirection and manipulation. so i end up a lot of the times taking assassin like characters to the support position and the amount of flame i get is ridiculous. usually i play just fine, and i spend most of my time near drake and the enemies red or blue buff than i do in lane, but i do that in order to draw the attention of the jungler and the two people in the bottom lane. when you're not in lane people tend to think you're easy prey and leave lane to kill you. movement speed differences are a lot less common now that alacrity and such have been removed so i usually dont even worry about escaping since it's pretty much guaranteed.

some games call it a sabatuer and some call it a spy. some games call it other things besides that.

there are a few more ways that i like to play support such as heimer's fortress and gold card fate.

If you're only mastering one role, then you're not getting good at the game, you're getting good at that role, and that's a pretty significant difference.

Take a look at the pros. They play one role in actual pro games, but most of them can play at least 3 well enough to win lane at least half the time, and the other two well enough to not be a significant burden on their team. They didn't get to where they are because they're amazing at one role, they got to where they are because they can play any role reasonably well.

3TWarrior2 votes

I thought they got to where they were because they were good enough at a player audition to get sponsored for the very expensive compeitive entry fee?

or if you mean professional normal players, it's all about advertising, not necessarily the truth. A player could be challenger but no one would watch them if they weren't fun to watch

The difference in pick order vs the current system is that "Hey im last pick but im a mid main. Can i have mid?" more often than not people woudl say "sure i dont mind that much." unless they too were a mid main - because everyone has two main roles.

The people who "filled" usually did so willingly with the pick order system. With the current system riot GAVE YOU your role, why the hell should i give up what is mine?

Blackstone015 votes

I recall in the old system last pick was almost always going to get you support, it was also the time of "mid or feed". Pick order was a sloppy mess of people playing chicken to determine roles or just making you their bitch simply for being lower than them.

Mid or feed still exists. Pick order was literally the order you picked in, and was determined generally by MMR so the better players usually got higher pick priority. It wasnt a game of chicken or a sloppy mess... it was a socially constructed system by which the people who played ranked adhered to. What youre thinking of is blind pick, in which you "call" your role. People who were just starting ranked used to think they could "call" like they did in blind pick, and those people started the "mid or feed" meme.

Blackstone015 votes

Mid or feed occurs less often than it did in pick order. Pick order was NOT based on your MMR, and even if it was it wasn't nearly a big enough difference that the person picking one spot before you is a much better player. Whoever came before you had first dibs on roles. If you came afterwards tough shit you were at their mercy. It was an arbitrary system that bred toxicity.

... yes pick order was based on your MMR. Higher MMR usually meant higher pick order. It didnt always occur like that, but it was a rule of thumb. The current system breeds even more toxicity because people dont ACCEPT that theyre "last pick" and forced to fill. With pick order, people ACCEPTED their position and if they didnt then they were usually toxic and reported.

Both systems had their flaws, but at least pick order people could rationalize it and it wasnt some arbitrary value in an RNG system that says "nah you get filled".
I would MUCH prefer being last pick in the pick order than be auto filled.

Meanie406 votes

They changed it in season 4 I believe (MMR no longer being a part of pick order).

Were we playing the same game? Because that's not how it happened, at all. Pick order (as an unwritten rule of SQ) was serious business. Forth and fifth players in the team always had to fill for the roles no one wanted and yes, sometimes people could agree on what to play. But that's not at all any different than what we have right now. Apart from your assigned roles, people can still swap roles, if they agree to it.

Nothing was flexible in the old system, it just wasn't specifically stated and it caused confusion. Now, it is specifically stated and the player agreement still takes precedent over what the system has told them what to play.

One big problem is that this isn't usually unusual behavior, this entitlement. Nowadays, being anything but a petulant troll usually entails being called out as a tryhard or something. People will also be awestruck, on a positive note, but...

Riot didn't nip the problem when it was small. Now, their reputation of 'worst community to play a game with' is almost painfully demonstrable in almost any situation. It sucks ass.

You think it's bad now? I remember when you would win all your placements and still be put in Bronze 5 because you were randomly placed against low MMR people. And whenever you hit your promos you would always, ALWAYS get people with very low MMR and win rate to make it nigh fucking impossible to win.

Had a guy play AP Tryndamere in Season 4 during my promos to get to S5 because he just, and I quote, "didn't feel like winning."

Matchmaking is a fucking miracle compared to the shitstorm it used to be.

It has a lot to do with perspective and what "ready for ranked" really means, and how that may have changed. It's probably hard to picture what coming to the game now is like if you played since like s2 or what have you.

I started playing in season 6, so i only experienced role selection and that was just ranked for me. So "ready for ranked" meant being able to play mid/top consistently enough relative to everyone else just starting out. The whole being able to play any role at the same level seems overwhelming and insane to me. Obviously players want to specialize and stay in a comfort zone instead of trying to do everything.

Now with autofill that changed heavily and there were definitely games which i lost due to being adc or support and arguably single handedly losing the game for the team. So now "ready for ranked" is now my main roles plus i got karma ready to go for when im autofilled.

Ahh the classic nostalgia thread: "things were better x number of years ago when (insert nostalgia here) happened, but today (insert complaint about current situation) and (insert insult toward people that like or appreciate current situation)".

The old system sucked, period. You can't defend it, you can't deny it and most importantly it ISN'T COMING BACK. The notion that you were at the mercy of RNG for your pick order was silly and many of you were the ones that complained about it then, so just stop pretending like things were so muh better.

Many aspects of this game have changed, some for the better, some not... but let's be clear here, not having to fight for your role in champ select is a change that is certainly for the better.

Exactly.

Sadly people are so bent on going through with the game, they'd rather AFK in the fountain and trash-talk for 20+ minutes straight, rather than quit the lobby and save everybody trouble.

The amount of trolling in the champion select needs to go way over the top and even then people may not dodge because "muh ranked".

Serika Zero3 votes

Sry to ruin your expectations, but one trick ponies, usually back in plat+ years ago had it easier. And yes, there were a lot of one trip (riven only, lee only, etc) that couldn't play all roles.

If anything, expecting to play all roles at the highest level is bullshit. Even in LCS they don't do that, and those players are payed to play shit fucking game. And you know why they don't do it? Because to get good at one role, you need to practice. So, in the time it would take to get practice for all 5 roles, someone else will get 5 times better than you on a single role. Example: Echo Fox vs Team Liquid last week. With Piglet (an ADC main for years) got CRUSHED by Froggen (a mid main) in the second game in a match-up that would normally be a 50/50 (enemy doesn't counter him, and he doesn't counter enemy laner).

So, while you will stay bronze, that other player will get into gold. Sure, you will be better than them on all 4 other roles. But if you face him on his main role, you'll get CRUSHED.

That's why you see in challanger, diamond, masters people that are highly focused on a single role. Even if their champion pool is kind of wide, like lets say 5 champions. All 5 play the same thing. The new champion select allowed selection of 2 roles, which not ideal is still a massive improvement over "having to practice all 5".

Not to mention that practicing 2-3 good champions in all 5 roles will take exponentially more time than 2-3 champions in 1-2 roles. And yes, even something as little as Top to Mid are VERY different.

So, no. Old seasons't weren't more spectacular or hard once you got above silver where people started to understand what maining a position meant. In diamond + people started to know each other and let each other have roles they main in. That's why, the number of 1 tricks was higher than right now.

The simple concept that you can play everything is bronze/silver. And last pick support was something I rarely saw after getting above gold. If anything, one of the first picks (first 3) will pick support to let their mid/top get a better match-up in their solo lane. If I look back at season, most of my janna games were first picks. Coz, there's no real counter for janna + my team gets to get good picks compared to the enemy = higher chance to win = huge win rate on my janna

for that you go to champions and pick s5 https://euw.op.gg/summoner/userName=serika+zero and you can see that overall, my kda usually sucks, but i win games. And my Morgana is a mid morgana btw. Not support, so, all morgana games (except maybe 2-3) are mid morg

And I used to be able to play 3 roles: sup (janna only), mid(morgana, malzahar, ahri, diana), top(fiora, akali). malza got reworked, and ahri didn't get practice in a long time, so my mid pool is small again top fiora got reworked, same for akali, so, my top lane now its random picks

So, if I don't get mid/top. I'll go "fuck this shit" and pick my worst champion for that role, unless i got adc mf available, then i might try. Oh, I get auto fill into jungle? lets pick seju and farm all game Got outfill into support? worship the sun all game and dive towers from lv 2 onwards Got autofil top? ap ekko here we go Got autofil bot? i only have the q button ezreal ftw

I was watching some last night and apperently 13 games on a champion is considered an extreme amount of practice for those in the na lcs. So, shouldn't be hard for them to practice considering they literally get paid to play the game.

But otherwise I agree with you.
