"We will add Solo Queue after Dynamic Queue" (few months later) - "We will never add Solo Queue"

To be clear, ranked queues for the 2016 season are: Dynamic Ranked A few weeks after season start: Solo Ranked

Well thanks a lot Riot.

My faith in you was already getting rather flimsy, your complete betrayal has all but destroyed it entirely.

Overwatch released bois

Yeah I knew nothing of Overwatch but having seen the massive swath of people recommending it to me, I was forced to watch some videos and it looks like a new MOBA-esque TF2.

Shroom Junkie1 votes

It kind of is. Its a lot more team oriented than TF2(which is odd because its literally called "team fortress"), and a hellalot smoother. Plus it already has more characters(/classes) on release than TF2 has ever had and more to come, and the addition of all the lore and amazing Dreamworks-esque cinematics they have don't hurt either.

ARequestOfDeath1 votes

ranked mode for tf2 is coming out. so it is still in the competition.

Shroom Junkie1 votes

TF2 is so solo-oriented, I don't see why it would. I mean, I can understand a team-ranked where you actually cooperate with your friends or team but even then there isn't much use to work as a team. Maybe small squads, but not a full team.

ARequestOfDeath1 votes

that would be a pub you are talking about. The ranked games are team based 6 v 6 matches

Shroom Junkie1 votes

All matches are 6v6.

ARequestOfDeath1 votes

no. have you played on pubs? they can get up 16 vs 16.

Leetri4 votes

Guess what? Overwatch also has Dynamic Queue!

Soldier of 4Jhin1 votes

Yeah but at least I can solo carry against premades

ARequestOfDeath1 votes

just pick bastion. you will still win when you lose after you hear the words play of the game

no that is torbjorn

Pretty much everything I've seen about the solo experience in Overwatch pretty much nails it down as really damn terrible in comparison to actually having a team.

And from my personal experience, that's been true.

Soldier of 4Jhin1 votes

Havent gotten to play overwatch yet waiting for my new computer to come in but if its a fps game I can solo carry ez pz just like any other fps

This is probably the first time I'm ever going to agree with Dominick Destine. I've clocked in around 5k hours on League, not counting watching streams, researching, League boards and reddit reading, just sitting in client for queue times, and chatting with friends I've made over the two years I've been playing. I was literally thinking and dreaming about League every day for two years. But in the past month, I found that I was forcing myself to play League, not for enjoyment but as a gateway drug from the real world. Clicking the Play button became more difficult than actually winning a match. Riot's inability to do just about anything right ranging from balance to soloqueue to any other features that they claim they can't make has just turned me away from the game faster than they got me addicted to it.

Here's to Riot for finally curing my addiction of League and letting me focus on dead week and finals, and the ever so new and prospective Overwatch.

Dominick Destine6 votes

{quoted}

and the ever so new and prospective Overwatch.

I might look into that, I keep seeing it come up literally everywhere this is being discussed.

Troiann5 votes

Yeah the hype is real. Mostly because it's new, but also because it really is indeed a fun game for a lot of people. It's my first FPS and while it took me a while to get used to the controls I'm really having a blast.

Not the dream game and Blizzard has some shitty memes attached to it but I would definitely recommend if you want a fresh and polished game. You don't have to worry about afks too, and since games are short and there is no snowballing mechanic feeders aren't that much of a problem too. Overall a lot smoother feeling than League.

Dominick Destine7 votes

Overall a lot smoother feeling than League.

That's not much of a praise, but the rest of what you said sounds interesting... it sounds like a less bullshit version of Team Fortress 2.

I don't enjoy League anymore, S6 in general really drained my desire to play League... being personally mistreated by Riot really shook my faith in them... them completely betraying solo queue players has driven me away for good. Overwatch it is.

it sounds like a less bullshit version of Team Fortress 2.

That's a very good comparison to make, and pretty accurate. The characters feel more like MOBA characters than FPS classes, but the gameplay is FPS all the way through.

Another game to look at is Mech Warrior Online. Free to play Mech FPS where the gameplay is slower (read: you don't die instantly unless you're very out of position) and you can customize your load out. Built in voice chat, but everyone is pretty good at keeping things low key and not going off the wall when things head south.

That sounds pretty solid.

Now my only question is; Does it have a ranked system that tracks stats?

I don't think they said they would add it, they just said they will look into the possibility of adding it.

They broke a promise. Yes, it sucks. Yes, it a mark against them. Yes, people have the right to be angry/disappointed in them. But they are hardly the first company to do so, and they will not be the last. There's a difference between malicious, premeditated lies, and having to break a promise that was made too hastily. Neither are good, but they certainly aren't at the same level of bad. Perhaps you aught to come down from your ivory tower and join us in the real world where things don't always go as you initially intended.

It's frustrating because it's one more lie to add to Riot's pile.

They lie a LOT.

Nik Nikerson1 votes

Do they? Because I really don't remember a whole lot other than this.

Baron Von Bangin5 votes

Limited edition skins, the Institute of War, and Dominion are just a few.

Nik Nikerson1 votes

The Institute of War? You mean like the old fluff?

Baron Von Bangin2 votes

Yup. Back when it looked like Riot was phasing the old stuff out, player would ask them about if they were planning on removing the IoW from the lore and Riot replied with, "WHAT?? The League of Legends isn't going anywhere!"

There was also the whole 1000 RP fiasco, when the servers decided to implode for a week back in season 2 and Riot promised 1000 RP to players? But gave out a win boost instead.

They also said they'd start doing SR reskins (like they did in Season 1 and 2) once the map update was done. It's been almost two years since it's been finished and nothing. In fact, in the recent FAQ it looks like they're going back on that one too.

They said not all new champions will release at 6300 IP and Riot will continue to release lower priced ones.

They said you could help design your own champion with 10k referrals.

they said they'd turn on Dominion Ranked after PAX (2011).

Replays. lol

Elikain1 votes

Oh i see. So basically, once they say something, it's set in stone forever? OK, you remember your first time when you played LoL and said this game is awesome and that you never want to stop playing it? Well, according to your argument, you are not allowed to change your opinion.

#Anyway, ignoring your thickheadedness, let's talk about your points:

1. Riot said old lore isn't going anywhere.

I don't know where you got that gem from. They've seen the opportunity to make it better and they did. None of the lore we have now (and long champion bios) would have been possible under the old lore which was basically shit and just made up when League was created. It served the purpose but had no direction or was extremely generic and appropriately replaced. What your'e telling me right now is that you'd be completely fine with Riot attempting to polish a turd where on the other side of things, as soon as something gets released that's of lower quality that the League's average, the community never misses a chance to fire shots (ayyy, Chroma Packs).

Let me tell you a thing about Chromas: The community saw the easiness in recoloring something, except that every recolor has been treated as a separate skin that had to be reconnected to sounds, animations and spells (just like any skin would) because League doesn't have something called Skin Objects. Every skin is a Skin Object that requires the same amount of work. For Chromas, that's 3 recolors (the easy part) and 3 skin objects (the hard part). Riot was doing 3x the amount of work for 590 RP (charging too little) while the community thought that they were charging too much for simple recolors. Riot didn't debate this issue with us, they simply stated that since it's both tough for them to make and not good enough for us, they are for the moment iceboxed. Making 750 RP skins required just a tad bit more work than Chromas and the community liked those so the situation was resolved for the time being.

2. SR reskins

If you already read that FAQ, then you conveniently left out the part where they explained why they won't drop the quality of their work just because of a few SR skins. It's the Chroma Packs problem all over again.

3. Now all new champions will cost 6300IP

Don't really know where you heard this one but sounds reasonable. maybe a few more price ranges? I don't know how they determine a champion's price but on the other side of things, Riot is reducing older champion prices constantly.

4. 1000 RP fiasco

I've received 900 RP from Riot because i was present when that fiasco happened. All of the people affected have gotten it. I remember that because i was 75 RP short of a regular champion skin (and that was the idea back at the day) so i settled with a sale of old poppy skins on some god forsaken account. The next time there was some other problem with the servers, that was when we've received only a 4 win IP boost.

5. Ranked Dominion

They've said that and it clearly wasn't meant to be a ranked experience. Mainly because SR was popping off like crazy at the time and maintaining 2 separate game modes as an e-sport was too much work for a small company (at the time) like Riot. Years passed and forcing a game mode towards being an e-sport is not going to happen. It's something that needs to happen naturally.

6. Replay

After the LCU. Riot will not make any new features for the Legacy Client because it's a fucking pain in the ass to deal with and it always has to come with the reduced quality because having something intricate and complicated working on spaghetti code and old technology risks breaking already working things just by existing. That was also the reason why every feature we've gotten was super late and less than we expected.

Baron Von Bangin1 votes

You can wrap it up with all the fancy apologies and excuses you want. But where I come from when you say you're going to do something, and then don't, it's called lying.

Baron Von Bangin1 votes

Seems that way.

You're okay with lying and I'm not. Riot has reasons for lying. But lying is still lying.

Joek91001 votes

They also said they wouldn't release skins that were 1350 RP and it would only be 975 or lower except for legendaries and now it seems like every other skin is 1350.

Nik Nikerson1 votes

All the beast hunter skins are 750. Death Blossom Kha'zix is 975. Black Scourge Singed, Iron Inquisitor Kayle, Cursed Revenant Nocturne all 750. Two of the three new Lucha skins are 750. Ryze Whitebeard, and all the other skins in that cycle are 750. Are they still releasing 1350 skins? Yeah. They're also releasing quite a few cheaper skins as well.

How the hell do you know what their intentions were?

Did you see the number of well-articulated posts over the last 6 months making the case for us never actually getting solo queue back, that this is the plan, and that they are handling the player base?

What's more likely?

  1. Solo queue temporarily removed to start DQ, despite the two ladders being perfectly capable of existing side by side, and the DQ ranking immediately replacing solo queue as the standard ranking, with the full intention of returning SQ back to us basically the same as it was before.

or

  1. Riot wanting to replace SQ with DQ for their own reasons, and understanding this would be a difficult pill to swallow for a lot of players, especially the more dedicated and public ones, instead of immediately taking away SQ, implement a system of "managing expectations" over a 6 month period to help diffuse the anger and outrage. People play DQ in the meantime, and become accustomed to it, and gradually accept it as their reality while the promise of SQ is dangled about and slowly fades away.

Do you really think these guys don't understand what they are doing? They've already told you their goals and the future of the game. They aren't going to come and say "like, uh we're totally making the game less competitive, with, like, big booms and flashy game-breaking abilities to, uh, like, help hold the attention of the, like, younger audience that, uh, makes us all our money and , uh, buys all our shit.

Look at who DQ is targeting. Casual players? Hell no. Casual players don't maintain a long list of friends or spend their weekend with r/l friends playing League. Competitive players? Nope. They would want both a true SQ and a ranked 5x so they can practice.

It caters to the social players. The ones who don't come into League to play League, but to hang out with their friends. People more interested in watching streams and buying paraphernalia, and etc. The ones who buy skins to show off to their friends. This is more or less Riot's target audience now.

Nik Nikerson1 votes

You're right. I don't know what their intentions were. The same way people that think this was a giant conspiracy don't. All I can off is what they put forward.

I'll go with option 1: Riot screwed up and thought their new system would be a bigger hit and have less issues than it does. How is telling people you'll do something for 6 months, and then not doing it going to help diffuse anger? That tactic generally has the exact opposite outcome. It just builds frustration over time. Kind of like how it has. If this were an evil conspiracy on Riot's part, they sure did go about it in the absolute worst way possible.

Because they are slowly changing their position rather than immediately going from solo queue to no solo queue.

In a few weeks, then a few months, then we're trying to make it work, we aren't sure it'll work, then it won't work.

It's a more gradual adjustment from A to Z, changing your expectations each time, and giving you small bits of anger/disappointment/whatever rather than one big burst.

This is a fairly common tactic used to manage all sorts of things, from companies and employees, to pr, to children.

And how well has that worked out?

I'd say it worked out very well for them.

Sure, people are still making a fuss over DQ, but that's because it is such a monumental, game changing decision.

Imagine if all the posts and emotion over the last 6 months all came out at one time. There'd be no defending their decision or denying the extraordinary opposition to the change

Nik Nikerson1 votes

Yeah, imagine if all the post had come out at once. We'd have a month of people posting constantly about them killing solo queue, and by now we'd be down to a trickle and people would have moved on. In fact, it probably would have decreased the overall complaining. People would have accepted it more quickly, because there wasn't another option. Instead you had a large number of people sitting around going "I hate this, I can't wait for solo queue to come back". And the longer you drag out the process, the longer those people keep sitting around wanting their solo queue back. It's a terrible idea. Oh, and in the meantime Riot takes a hit to its credibility.

Actually, they jumped the gun. They promised something they couldn't bring to life, because of new facts coming up, and now they're facing the backlash of what happened. It said in the Riot Plz blog post, that they shouldn't have promised it, but at that moment they believed that they could exist at the same time. When they actually did some more research into it, they realized that the possibility wasn't there any more.

This is not a case where Riot went "We'll say we'll release it, and then DON'T". Because that is lying. They did try to bring the idea of SoloQ to life, but couldn't, and at that point, they realized they fucked up. They admitted that they shouldn't have gone silent over the few months, and they'd like to amend that with being more communicative. They made a mistake, promised something they couldn't have done, and now are trying to make amends.

They did not lie. They, at release, truly believed they could have both Solo Que and Dynamic Que, and they did actually try for a long time, to try to get the two ideas to work together. But It didn't work out, and that's that. It's like if you promise to bike the Tour de France, but you accidently broke your leg. Does that make you a liar? No, because something happened to make you unable to bike the Tour de France. To call them a liar is to ignore facts and reasoning, because you wanted to see them bike the Tour de France.

You're nitpicking only the parts to fit your argument. Riot did originally try to get Solo Que to work, but when things didn't work out, they told the community in the form of the "Riot Plz" blog post, that Solo Que was harder to get working than they originally thought, and that they had jumped the gun on promising Solo Que, saying that they shouldn't have promised it in the first place.

IN FACT, you're ignoring even the definition of lying. From google a Lie is "an intentionally false statement", which is not true because when Riot initially promised it, they believed that it was true, and possible. As time went on, it turns out, that was not the case. So, they did not lie.
