I remember a time when the general consensus was; "If you don't know how to play every role, you're not ready to play ranked"

Now it's "ZMOG I HAVE TO PLAY SUPPORT? WTF IS THIS BULLSHIT, I DON'T KNOW HOW TO PLAY ANYTHING EXCEPT [X] CHAMP, FUK U NOW I TROLL U ALL"

And people support the latter attitude..... what a bunch of entitled , whiny children the community has become, at least it used to be whining about stuff that mattered like balance (By the way, nerf Yasuo and Lee Sin) and disregarding internal ethical protocol at Riot HQ (Remember that Rioter that rage-banned some dude and got fired beacuse of it? that was epic).

Point is; GET OFF MY LAWN.

Edit: I'd like to point out that the people that DID play multiple roles effectively, more easily climbed the ladder than the "I ONLY PLAY RIVEN" types.

As a support main and generally mediocre, jack-of-all trades player who doesn't mind playing whatever role, I laugh at all the whining going on. You aren't going to die if you have to play support for one goddamn game. Well said, Dominick Destine, put the brats in their place.

SpecterVonBaren2 votes

I used to be just like you but then we had the full season with role pick and without autofill where I just ended up as support 95% of the time so now I'm horribly rusty at any other role. [zombie-brand-clap]

Not really whining. Calling people brats for complaining too. Get off the high horse

I don't mind getting autofilled as well it's just how it happens. You go into CS and get mid (my prime) someone leaves in the last second, Q pops out instantly and you get support.... why god... why. Need one game for your promo? Here play support. Oh one game before you get demoted? Here promo xD Though it's not only support, i've been autofilled into top, jungle and adc pretty frequently as well. I guess the higher the elo the more support mains are available.

Autofill is just Support mains finally being given something to laugh about.

Agreed 100% XD

Lol i lovew watching the complaining. Bot is my backup and i KNow im not good but ive never once had to complain about my role. I etiehr get support or bot because i dont know what its like playing with autofill enabled

No, it doesn't.

We used to play all roles. You're just spoiled by Riot's constant 'improvements'.

ModCaptainMårvelous48 votes

Granted, being able to pick roles -is- an improvement.

But you're absolutely right in the old vanguard vs. the new blood. Remember when Riot had to publicly address pick order vs. call order? Good times. (^:

Remember when Riot had to publicly address

Yes, I remember when Riot communicated with us as one human to another human rather than one massive corporate entity where no one takes responsibility for anything over the course of almost a full year before their incompetence/malice is finally brought to light.

Yes. I am talking about "The Lying-to-the-community-about-solo-queue-in-S6" incident.

Anyway, yes, Old Riot style > New Riot style

ModCaptainMårvelous29 votes

I think you're kind of exploding one situation.

You're also comparing when League had...what, a tiny fraction of it's player base and a single NA office vs. a global company running a game across the world. While you may not like what they say (and I sure don't sometimes), they are still one of the companies that communicate the most comparative to other industries. Do you think it's a coincidence that Overwatch has a dev-update almost every time there's a major patch?

Or a dev corner where Riot communicates with players?

Or any number of random posts from guys like Meddler? Or Ghostcrawler doing a monthly QA about league?

Sure, they can't talk to us one-on-one as much as they used to but if we had Riot's old style for everyone you'd see a LOT more situations like Tryn saying Regi needs to invest more in league or the "i hate when people call us greedy" situation. It's not that they're intentionally malicious (at least not all the time) but having someone with a comms degree reading over your personal letter can mean a LOT when it comes to not pissing people off.....

....well, not pissing EVERYONE off.

MrHaZeYo2 votes

I mean, Champ roles came out last year? Auto fill this year? Riot was a big company still in Season 5 before we had role preferences.

I'm fine with auto fill cause like the opening point, I played in a day where I had to learn all 5 roles. Granted my Top/AD isn't as strong as my Mid/JG, I can still effectively do them for my skill level.

ModCaptainMårvelous7 votes

Eh? What?

Champion roles have been a thing since Season 1.

For those who weren't around at that time, the game was a wild west in picks. Everyone scrambled to either insta-lock their pick and force people to play with them oooooor copy-paste "Mid" as fast as they could into the chat box. It got even worse in draft-style modes where people would call first but those ahead of them in the pick order would still draft the role and play it.

Again, the divide between pick order/call order got so bad Riot had to actually SAY something about it like they did with how "ADCs feel weak" or "Solo queue when?"

Aptest7 votes

well, maybe riot communicated to YOU GUYS AT NA.

we at EUW had "COMMUNITY COORDINATOR" with no knowledge or involvement in any thing relevant to talk to, because of "cultural differences" i.e. the good reds busing themselves talking only on NA.

i.e. RIOT YEGG, although i appreciate your rok and efforts, in as much as communicating with the community you were as useful as a rotten banana.

No, it doesn't.

We used to play all roles. You're just spoiled by Riot's constant 'improvements'.

Those of us who "Can" play all roles, don't necessarily "Want" to. It's not fun for a top/jg main to get stuck playing a no impact support champion. (By no impact, I mean high impact, but adcs bitch their ever loving asses off if you so much as accidentally take a cs mid fight or god forbid take a kill/build one non support/defensive item.)

Anidan11 votes

Maybe, but if you're playing in a competitive environment then sometimes things like 'fun' and 'want' will be sacrificed for the greater good, whether we want to admit it or not. I came from that same time period of "If you can't play all 5 roles, you shouldn't be playing ranked yet" and that mentality still remains for me, and will probably follow me into any other game I play with a ranked matchmaking mode that's taken at least sort of seriously. The conveniences are nice, but you should be able to function without those conveniences or other niceties should the need arise.

NineTailedMystic10 votes

You act like "X or feed" wasn't a thing

I do the same thing I did in S5. Dodge as much as I can if I don't get mid. Only play another role when out of dodges or chill for a while. Just because it was like that in the beginning, doesn't mean it's a good system.

To be honest, I liked the old system better. I liked not knowing what role I was going to play, and then having to mold my playstyle for the game. It made it a lot more diverse and fun. And I felt more proficient at the game. Sure I got to gold in season 6 by spamming Anivia in mid, but I feel like I liked it when one game I could go top, another ADC, another support and be progressing in all the roles. And you can't do that with fill, because you get support all the time, and while I don't mind support I don't want to play it 24/7.

So yeah, I'm with you on chuckling at all these autofill posts, because before Season 6 the entire system was "autofill"

Raoko Kari7 votes

I've been around since S4 but that doesn't make me hate auto fill any less. I main ADC and Support and I'm just so sick of getting lane partners who have no idea what their doing. I'm tired of having to explain the simplest things to my partner and having them still not have the competency to do them. Nothing is more depressing than having to 1v2 the enemy lane because your lane partner is essentially afk farming or standing afk behind you.

That is not new or restricted to auto-fill.

That has been happening since day 1.

the entire point of the new champ select was to eliminate the need to play all roles competently and let you specialize in what you're most comfortable with

it's kind of annoying that they gave up on that angle entirely but it makes sense, since otherwise nobody would want to play their shitty support champs lul

Actually no, the point of the new champ select was to streamline matches.

You were still supposed to be at least somewhat competent in every role.... or at least that was the original consensus in ranked... I guess it bled over and become "YOU ONLY NEED TO LEARN ONE ROLE", which is a horrible message to send to the playerbase.

Big Lincoln5 votes

it let you get comfy with 2 roles which certainly seemed like the biggest appeal to it, especially for one-tricks. if you weren't FORCED to play other roles, why bother playing them?

While you do have a point, I feel like saying that is comparable to people "back in my day, we didn't have medicine, we dealt with our sickness and we were happy, you fuckin pansies".

That's not even remotely close to what is happening. It's more like "I don't feel like climbing stairs because I've always escalators, I refuse to climb even a single stairway, fuck that"

And people who used to comfortably climb the stairs are like "Calm down, we didn't even have an escalator a few years ago"

And then people you are like "WTF LOL U ARE LIKE STALIN, U HATE TEH WORKING PPL"

Ok slight exaggeration but my point stands.

The problem I have with autofill isn't that I can't play all roles, I can to an extent although I'm not great at support. I have a problem with getting teammates who've never played a game of support in their life being put on support and surprisingly often trolling.

You can tell who is an old school player and who isn't by how much they think damage is too high right now.

Champions have never been as tanky as they are now. Look at your hp bar at level 6 when you are an ADC and only have a Doran's Blade. If you played in Season 1-2, you know you're tanky as hell.

Remember playing Tryndamere on old Twisted Treeline ? Poor level 1 Annie walks in the botlane bush, you hit her 3 times, 2 of your hits are critical strikes, you get 400 gold.

Where did she go ?

That's what she gets for having such a ridiculous HP bar.

Back in my days, having 600-700 hp at level 1 meant you used all your runes in flat HP, had bought a 475 PO Ruby Crystal and were playing Garen or Dr. Mundo. You didn't see an Ezreal do the same with a Dolan's Blade.

How long does it take to pick up the basics of a position and 1 or 2 champions? I'm not talking mastery, just competency.
