A discussion: Broken vs Overpowered

Hi guys! As we all know, a lot of people like to call this and that champion overpowered, sometimes rightly so (cough cough skarner). However, I feel like there is a misunderstanding within the community about the difference, and i hope i can clear it up.

What does overpowered mean?

Overpowered is when a champion, by virtue of numbers or kit, is quite simply too powerful. For example, lee sin before the nerfs was overpowered. His damage was pretty high and he had super amounts of mobility.

What does broken mean?

Broken is when a champion has a lack of counterplay, but is NOT necessarily overpowered and can even be underpowered. An example of an underpowered, balanced and overpowered champion are the following:

Underpowered: Kassadin - before his semi-rework he was super OP simply due to the nature of his kit, now his numbers are shit so he is underpowered but his ult is still broken.

Poppy: Her laning phase as well as absurd mana costs gate her heavily, but when she ults your support there is literally nothing you can do but let her romp over your team.

Balanced:

Fizz - post nerf, his numbers arent QUITE good enough for him to be overpowered, but he is one of the most broken, if not THE most broken champion in the game with an easy to land 100 to 0 combo with an untargetability skill to boot.

Vi - The nature of her q and ultimate means that if she ever gets far ahead, she is impossible to peel off of your adc and can get in to the back lines 100% of the time with her immunity to CC

Riven: Look, I know this is going to be controversial, but I do NOT think riven is overpowered or needs nerfs. Similar to a lot of broken champions, riven is very feast or famine, but if she gets ahead her high amount of cc and her shield makes her tanky without any tank items and able to duel and chase almost everyone

Overpowered:

Kalista: For champions with no hard gapcloser such as olaf, darius, garen, mordekaiser, Kalista is hell. Her e makes her still do sizable damage, and a good kalista is virtually uncatchable. She has had a 72% ban rate in the Summer NA LCS split.

So, as much as certain champions may annoy you as they might be BROKEN, don't always assume they need nerfs - just changes to add counterplay

Overall a decent post: But this point I have a few issues with.

Poppy's CC immunity is a lot more valuable during her ult than the invulnerability.

I've run into a few Poppys that have ulted me as the support, and it's just been like, uh, ok. Have fun not moving for the duration of that and being useless.

Only reason you'd want to ult a support is if you can delete them before they can react. Otherwise taking ~1/4th of the team's damage is a lot more preferable to taking ~2/4 of their CC.

Really depends on the support, poke supports (karma/sona being the ones that have this big weakness) generally lack the CC needed to actually peel a poppy long enough for poppy to not murder An carry or two with two swings.

I think a good example of balanced but broken is definately Annie. Stun + combo that 100 to 0 even semi-tanky champs at range is more than fairly strong. Her ratio's aren't anything special, and neither is her kit in any way (in fact her sheer lack of any mobility is probably what balances her out if she isn't waiting for you to get close to a bush). Annie's kit is a perfect example of one that is balanced but severely lacks counterplay when she's even an inch fed with any gold.
