The new player experience is still completely shit...

BeatinWarDrumz··128 votes·5,888 views

You get a shitty tutorial with thornmail Ashe that explains nothing about scaling (which is still not in the ability icons...),, etc. You then drop them into bot games which could be beaten while sleeping, and then at level 5... BOOM the race is on. You get slaughtered and harrassed by smurfs and trolls, and words like "adc" or "meta" or "op" fly over your head.

Im surprised this game has so many players, and I guarantee you Riot that there would have MAY more if not so many people quit at the beginning.

Just going to quote another quote from reddit originally stated by Riot Boourns

Try intro bots, that's the newest experience and the one that we nudge new players into. The things you suggested are actually more suited to an intermediate learning experience. Truly new players know a lot less that you would expect.

I can provide some background on this, having worked on the team that was doing new player features. We did a lot of research and technical investigation into modernizing the tutorial. We discovered that the tutorial, for all its weirdness, actually does a pretty good job of successfully getting you through a first look at the game. Instead we actually spent a lot of time working on intro bots, because it was lower cost due to a more modern bot/scripting system and it was also something you could play for 5-10+ games and get some valuable learning from it. Intro bots is also the default choice that you see when you enter the game as a new player and it's designed to teach you even if you haven't played the tutorial or battle training. If the team was still together, we might have considered re-doing the tutorial and battle training (possibly into a single experience), however it would have been a complete restart on the experience IMHO. The tutorial is really old and difficult to work in, all the incremental changes we investigate were too expensive for the benefits it would provide to new players. We talked about turning off tutorial and battle training, but in the end they still teach you some valuable things that intro bots doesn't cover.

I would encourage folks to check it out and give some feedback. However, I would point out that a more experienced player probably won't see much of the contextual guidance that we built because you'll already be doing the right things (like using abilities... or remembering to level them up). However even the changes to recommended items should give you an idea of the approach we took.

Regarding locked camera. When we started the team, I was strongly in favor of quickly moving people into unlocked camera. As an experienced player, it's pretty clear that it's kind of a noob trap. However, our 20+ observational studies with actual new players convinced me that having the camera locked by default at the start was almost essential to playing. Anyone who didn't have an RTS background had a really hard time playing the game with free camera. The improvements that we made to the locked camera are one step towards giving people a better alternative to a hard locked camera. I still think we can provide a better path to unlocking your camera, but the evidence we saw showed that the tutorial or even intro bots was too early for most genuinely new players.

For last hitting, we did talk about this and I've worked on thunderdome projects that explored it. If you ever watch a new player, you'll quickly understand that they have much more fundamental things to learn. Like right click moves/AAs, left click casts spells. Or that you should remember to use abilities. Or remember to level them up. Or know how to buy items. We spent a lot more time on those problems in the end because you needed to learn that before last hitting is valuable (no use having gold if you don't spend it on items, right?).

Having the tutorial on ARAM is deliberate (and actually it's ARAM that is on the tutorial map). When you're learning the bare bones basics of the game, it's better to not have the distractions of other lanes or dragons/barons/jungle. You're not going to benefit from trying to learn any of that stuff when you're just trying to move and attack or cast abilities.

So I'd say try intro bots and please give us some feedback. That's our most recent best effort at tackling this problem with a small team of people. I'm pretty proud of what we did with the resources available, and we saw some encouraging effects on new player retention. When you look at it, try to keep in mind that new players know a lot less than you think. It's hard to remember what it feels like to be a new player when you're 100's or 1000's of games in. But how did you ever know not to buy two boots (to make a pair obviously...), that right click moves, 'b' brings you back to base, 'enter' brings up chat, all that stuff that we all take for granted now.

Lastly: thornmail on Ashe. I hope Brackhar feels some amount of shame for doing this. It's a total hack. It's basically so that you can't die to minions and it will autopush you to victory from the passive. I don't even know if that's true anymore after the changes to thornmail over the years. Although every time I bring it up he tells me he's proud of finding a creative solution to the problem."

He continued:

"I hear what you're saying, and habits are hard to change. I'm not saying that the tutorial doesn't show you some wrong things, however I am saying that our research suggested that those wrong things didn't ultimately have a lot of retention and we spent a lot of effort with intro bots showing you simplified (but correct) ways to do things. We had to pick one or the other essentially, and we believed that intro bots would compensate for any wrong things the tutorial might still teach you because games 2 - 10+ would have a greater long term impact than a 15 min tutorial experience.

The difference here is that if all you get is one guitar lesson and I teach you the wrong thing, you'll probably turn that into a habit and have a hard time changing in the future. If I let you use your 3 finger instead of 4 the first lesson just so you can play and not leave frustrated, and then in your second/third/fourth lesson let you get more comfortable and train you out of using your 3 finger... well there I think you have much less chance of forming a bad habit."

TLDR: The tutorial works, the new player experience right now has nothing to do with the tutorial.

If you're going to talk about the new player experience you should mention how toxic the community is to actual new players. They don't know what cs is, what any of the champions do, and what the objectives are / do. Yet, continually they get matched with experienced people on second accounts who rage at the slightest failure.

Oh and another horrible experience is first hitting level 30 only to realize all the ip you gained should've went straight into horribly expensive runes + rune pages in order to be competitive. Seriously runes need to be either extremely cheap or outright free. They're just a horrible grind on new accounts.

Oh, and all roles should be doable off the bat. Gating summoner spells behind leveling is pointless and can actually make inexperienced players develop bad habits. Actually Duo top & Bot is the meta on new accounts and will give new people the idea that its standard. Duo top being meta is only because the jungle is extremely hard to clear without runes + masteries unless you are certain champions

clickhead3 votes

For runes, I have to say that tier 1 runes are essentially free and that tier 2 runes are very, very cheap. Of course tier 3 is better but there isn't an enormous difference in stats between tier 2 and tier 3 runes. The main thing is that I think all rune slots should be unlocked at level 10 at most, so people can start learning the jungle.

Maybe it's a bit much to expect a level 1 brand new player to get a rune page setup but at level 10 it would be a good time to introduce the system. Making rune slots and higher tier runes unlockable only at higher levels gives higher level accounts better innate stats, and this game is a MOBA not an MMORPG so you shouldn't be stronger than someone just because your account is higher level.

Definitely Bait3 votes

Account level definitely should not matter in a moba. Everything a level 30 account has available and gives advantages should be available to a level 1 account. There is no reason a new player should be put at a major disadvantage versus a fully leveled account. Gating summoner spells and masteries just makes new players extremely weak for no reason.

As for runes the tier system is pointless. Tier 1 & 2 runes are literally a waste of minor amounts of gold. There is no reason to have a lower level version of all the tier 3 runes. Tier 3 runes should be available from level 1 and not cost more than 10 champions for all the necessary runes to play any champion. Literally to be able to play any champion on the roster and still be competitive at a minimum you will need to spend 50,000 to 100,000 ip. That's around 500 - 1000 matches.

My estimate to be able to play any champion efficiently rune wise would be something like this

9 of each for these Marks: Arpen, Mpen, Hpen, Ar, Ad, As, Crit Seals: Hp, Hp/lvl, Ar, Ar/lvl Glyphs: Ap, Ap/lvl , As, Mr, Mr/lvl, Cdr, Cdr/lvl, Mregen

Then quints which are 3 of each Quints: Ap, Ad, Ar, Cdr, Hp, Hp/lvl, Crit, Hpen, MS

Actually that pretty much lists every rune I've used often or on multiple pages playing every champion in at least one or two games (Only 690 wins in the normal queue tab).

Actually, Long Term, you shouldn't buy ANY Runes until you are ready to hit Ranked and will actually need them (as THEN W/L matters for advancement).

Otherwise you are simply wasting your resources buying Runes that you will quickly outgrow... and not have the resources to buy those Tier 3 once you can unlock them.

And this is coming from a guy that bought Runes every chance he got... I made a TON of mistakes early and wasting my League Points on Tier 1 and Tier 2 Runes was a major one.

KillerKell1 votes

If you are on a 2nd Account and playing Normal or Low Elo Ranked... then it should be incumbent on you to UNDERSTAND you'll be matched with tons of Inexperienced Players.

Thus, the fault would be on the Experienced Player for being to stupid to realize that.

I by no means want to defend the toxic a-holes, because there is no defending that, but I think Riot is just as much to blame for that as well. When you toss someone full force into the deep end of the pool, it gets hard for them to swim with people who are already doing laps around the pool.

They have to come in learning what champs go in what role, what roles go in what lanes, you don't even start being able to use all the summoner spells yet people expect you to know what jungling is (despite new players not even knowing what smite is as if it would matter since you can't use it anyways), having to learn to cs, know that Ashe goes bot not mid (and not thornmail <_<), what a support is and why that matters, why warding is important, why a mage uses ability power when ad champs have abilities too....the list gets ridiculous when you realize how much there is to learn for someone who has never played a moba or LoL. The only way you learn about the game is by caring enough as a new person to watch the LCS and hope you pick something up, or have people yell at you because most people aren't patient enough to teach a stranger.

Rune prices are a joke, the game makes no effort to explain them to you, and geez the list is a mile long. Riot has dropped the ball with teaching anything, given how much there is to actually learn, and there is no excuse for that.

Let me tell you how one of my first pvp matches went: Kalista Hey loner you're support Me: I don't even know how to do that yet. Rengar just be support Kalista needs one. Me: but I'm going to do horrible Kalista JUST FUCKING SUPPORT Me: um... uh... MissFortune Kalista ARE YOU FUCKING STUPID MissFortune Are you even listening to what I a said? I don't even know what a role is supposed mean. Kalista OMFG JUST DONT FUCKING STEAL MY KILLS I then proceeded to panic every time a fight broke out and killed the enemies every time. Judging by how they reacted, I was reported. There should really be more detailed instructions and Tutorials to actually teach brand new players about CS, roles, objectives, jungling, tactics, etc. I shouldn't have had to have one of my Gold I friends explain to me all those things or even hold my hand through jungling while they explained what each monster did and a good sequence to go about it etc. Granted, I enjoyed being taught by them but a lot of basic things I had learned by getting rekt and flamed. If it wasn't for having friends playing already, I'd have quit before I hit level 15. And I'm on hiatus from this game still due to all the unfun this game offers right now.

The purpose of Thornmail on Ashe is to allow the new player to win against the enemy Trundle regardless of how well they can grasp the controls. A defensive approach is much better when going over the basics of the game, rather than the advanced glass cannon approach.

The problem, as already mentioned, is there aren't multiple tutorials to go over the different aspects of the game. This is a big deal for a game that has such a steep learning curve. The player is essentially forced to either go through a ton of trial and error without any in-game assistance in co-op aside from very basic tips, or spend a gratuitous amount of time looking up beginner guides and videos that aren't even made by Riot.

clickhead3 votes

Yeah they should have advanced Riot-made tutorials that go over all the other features and aspects of the game. From personal experience there are a lot of people who don't play league because they feel lost at the beginning.

No the purpose of Thornmail on Ashe is because you aren't supposed to die with that item on that specific map. That is also why you couldn't buy Thornmail on the old Proving Grounds map. It was coded on that map to not allow you to die (I can't say if it is the same now, but I know that is 100% why it was that way before).

It was nothing as simple or well thought out as giving you a defensive item to help, it was actually coded (Thornmail) on that map to not all you to go below 1 hp.

Treats you like less of a scrub and more like the game is self important and goes "meh, you wanna play good luck. Go figure it out". Unfortunately that heavily mirrors Riot's attitude a lot of the time, because they think very highly of themselves, and what do they care about a few people that are new when they have such a huge player base. I don't agree with that sentiment, but if they cared, we wouldn't have the same lack of a tutorial for new players that we did when I started playing almost 6 years ago.

I'll tell you why LoL has bigger playerbase.

Because Valve was too slow on relasing Dota 2 earlier.

LoL had about 4 years to gain huge advantage in players. Now with this huge playerbase the can really take it easier. So what if we lose 5% of new players because of shitty new player expereince. No big lose.

Also league of legends doesn't ask much pc requirements so players that doesn't have a good pc can still play LoL, besides LoL still have a good looking enviroment and more vivid colors than Dota. and LoL style of characters/enviroment/etc is more attractive than Dota 2 IMO.

Saianna1 votes

Really? Never knew DOTA 2 has higher requirements.. It always looked so square'ish to me, like olds old-gen kinda..

And yeah, LoL being more "cartoonish" is better for the eye :)

Still, 4 years as being the only 1 company in MOBA genre is huge advantage.

WhiteTieNeko1 votes

Yup Dota 2 has higher requirements, look at the dota 2 steam page, maybe seens like and old - gen 'cause the devs where trying to imitate Warcraft 3 Style where they originally realesed the custom map Defense of the Ancients (DOTA).

I've played in WC3 "original" dota :P

They weren't the only one, they were just the only good one. HoN actually came before Dota 2 officially launched as well, and they were in second (because there was no one else around in the same light, but there were other similar games like Demigod), but League was miles ahead of HoN, and Dota 2 was a bit too...."hardcore" in comparison, which basically shot them in the foot before they started running trying to directly compete with LoL.

It was free to play I'm fairly certain, it just wasn't good. I can't speak on it too much to be fair though, as I never had the urge to play it since I grabbed LoL first, and even back then it was the better choice by far.

Agreed about Demigod. It was a fun little game, but it was awkwardly better single than multiplayer.

Exactly why I don't play dota 2. I've got this crappy little PC/tablet hybrid which can run League and most other games mostly lag free (by some miracle or another) but it simply craps out whenever i try to run dota 2.

WhiteTieNeko2 votes

That's why LoL has more player base, lets take in consideration the other regions, other countries where a really good pc its really REALLY expensive, they got LoL to play and its like the same (if not better) deal as Dota ... and IMO it is better.

1.Players should be able to get information on items, champions, game terms, roles, mechanics and a lot of other things from the client instead of having to go to third party sites.

  1. New players should have all summoner spells available from the start and by level 20 they should have completely unlocked rune pages and have all 30 mastery points to get a good feel for the game from level 20 to 30 and before reaching ranked.

  2. Lower exp required to get to 30 or at least reward players with an extra rune page or a free 3150 IP champion. Really just something useful as a reward for making the grind.

  3. Remove Tier 1 and Tier 2 runes (they are noob traps) and make Tier 3 runes available from the start.

MakersF4 votes

SOLUTION: lvl 30 accounts can queue for beginner bot game opting in to be a tutor. One low level player get matched with him, and all the other players in the lobby are notified that there is a teacher and a student (so they leave a lane for them). The lvl 30 player should teach whatever he feels like to the new user. No checks are enforced here

After the end of the game, the new user is asked some question ("was he nice?", "was he helpful?", "did he reply to your questions"?) If the new user reply with a good score, the lvl 30 player gets a better IP/minute pay from the game (let's say 20% more), otherwise just 5% more. When you queue as a mentor, you are not guaranteed to actually be a mentor in the game.

Ideally every new player will get a mentor every game (or almost, since there are way more active players than new players)

New players get a lot of different mentor (there will be trolls, but trolls will say random stuff, always different. The normal players will be consistent with the suggestions, so the new player can just follow the majority of suggestions)

The lvl 30 will get an incentive to grind the IP, and put to good use the 20 min of match against bot for the first win of the day. You can even add a " teacher" score to every account, so people can brag about how high is their teaching elo.

Win win situation, with the only cost for riot to develop a new champ select that supports mentorship.

They should be expert about that now, since they just did it.

Iittala1 votes

Please... I wish there was a way I could help introduce a friend to league or even a stranger... and not deal with the match making changes.

Swearing is as childish and negative as anyone who ruins the noob experience.

Having said that, if Riot decrease the learning curve by teaching new players the basics of the game, everyone would benefit.

For example, people at 30 that don't understand why the meta exists is not a good thing. I don't have a problem with with a Fizz jungle, but let's create a floor of knowledge, the floor being standard lanes and general map knowledge.

Most people don't figure out how to turn on all-chat until level 10, so they get a bit of a buffer.

You're assuming that new players will be winning enough to be ranked with smurfs. This is not the case for players who are truly new to moba games, and if they are experienced in another similar game then they already know those terms and how to deal with toxicity.

I think you forgot that a new player will mostly always be matched with other new players while a smurf will be matched mainly with other smurfs.

A smurf play better than a new player so his mmr is very quickly (maybe 3-4 games) higher than the average new player. Consequently a smurf is matched with other smurfs who are for a huge part previously banned players who make a new account so yes the flame is real.

For a new player, the flame should not be higher than what a player face at lvl 30.

Alsek1 votes

I feel like the biggest thing they could change would be to make the game play the same at level 1 as level 30.

Masteries and runes are an important part of the game. Getting chunked in lane by Sona's q because you can't get magic resist runes is not ideal.

Champions aren't balanced around a lack of runes.

Do away with tier 1 and 2 runes. Just give people access to tier 3s from the start. People might spend slightly less IP on runes while leveling but if it means they actually stick around and buy champions it might be worth it.

Worst Kench NA1 votes

I can attest to this. I started playing last year and I still have no idea when to engage or not, what runes I should buy, what CDR, proc, MR etc. mean, how to build AD or AP etc.

It's ridiculous that I have to use out of game sources to learn, at the very least, the terminology and how to build certain ways. I can understand stuff like tactics, but stuff like runes should really be explained earlier on. Riot should have built in features that explain this sort of stuff so people don't get lost before it's too late.

Yeah I lost that match. Yeah I felt like crap.

Xonra1 votes

I can name 11 personal friends of mine that have tried, and subsequently quit this game before even reaching level 30 (only 1 made it to 15 before getting frustrated and stopping).

The new player experience is honestly a joke, and Riot seems to not care, just leaving the "Teaching" to friends and strangers, instead of fixing a problem that has turned away I imagine thousands of players easily. That sounds like an exaggeration, but one person that invites a friend, they leave, that is one person lost. I can bet for every friend that sticks with the game, there are two that don't.

Riot should be embarassed they haven't even tried to address this issue, as the same crappy "tutorial" with ashe has been there since I started playing almost 6 years ago, and the ONLY thing that has changed is the map the tutorial is on changed into the howling abyss from Proving Grounds (what it used to be called).

I agree with this. I tried getting my friend into League but the tutorial was so bad and non appealing to my friend. He quit after his first bot game because he wasn't told that tower diving was a bad idea.
