Some interesting quotes:

So first off, the brutal truth: yes, his gameplay is dramatically different from current Aatrox, and yes, that's very intentional. We've said it a lot in the past - Aatrox's basic-attack centric drain tank play pattern does not offer enough tactical variance or counterplay. He's one of the most stat-checky fighters in the game, and when he's strong he doesn't offer a whole lot of options for opponents to fight against him. It’s very illustrative that in just a patch with no direct buffs, he moved from literally not being picked in a pro game for years to becoming arguably the highest priority top laner in the game. Aatrox is the epitome of a binary champion, and seeing him in competitive play has only reinforced the need to update his gameplay.

I guess he's never tried playing around Aatrox's passive or using proper wave management to keep Aatrox off the minion wave to stop him from healing or stacking passive. He also forgot that BoRK being 200 gold cheaper is a huge buff to Aatrox.

Of course if you're reading this, you're probably one of the few players who put in the time to understand Aatrox's playstyle and master something few others wanted to. The problem is we don't believe marginal shifts in Aatrox's kit would be enough to make him a healthy character who more players are excited to play.

Just gonna let that one speak for itself.

They said this repeatedly through the years, and theyre right. They cant keep his sustain on him as he is. Yi is one thing as you need an easy champion for newer players to get into the game, but aatrox is pretty much just "yi + self heals". Riot is fine with keeping yi unviable in higher end play, but aatrox has a better thematic design and higher pricepoint, so its expected theyd want him to be a real champ and not just an introduction champ. Especially when his kit is worse for the game comparitively.

Wow, I'm so happy to hear this. Aatrox is currently on sale and I was considering buying him, but the thing that was putting me off was the new model's overly basic appearance. Now that Riot are going to spruce him up, I think I might just go ahead and buy him after all. In addition to the changes Reav3 spoke of, I'd like to see:

  • Aatrox's face being made clearer and more distinctive. At the moment it's generally vague and featureless, and his eyes are invisible unless he looks upwards.
  • Aatrox's voice being made lower and more bassy.

Why, exactly?

"...and seeing him in competitive play has only reinforced the need to update his gameplay."

Why does it feel like sometimes, that any changes that Riot do, is just because of anything that happens in LCS, that makes Riot decided to change something?

Because when he gets randomly picked in a yoloQ game, that means nothing. Theoretically any champion can work there.

When a champion starts being picked in higher tiers, especially LCS, that means it's gone from being a random pick or low-tier stomper to being actually legitimately viable.

I would like to emphasize that Riot already planned on reworking him before Runes Reforged even landed. And that this just upped the pressure, because a champion stomping in uncoordinated play is one thing, but one that's stomping in coordinated and uncoordinated is even more problematic.

I guess he's never tried playing around Aatrox's passive

Playing around his passive is extremely boring gameplay, and incredibly easy. He just has to press Q or E, and not be out of combat too long. Also, he can instantly get it in a fight. Not much playing around done there.

Also, you can't play around his W at all.

or using proper wave management to keep Aatrox off the minion wave to stop him from healing or stacking passive.

Proper wave management is nice and all, but what do you do when Aatrox also knows how to properly manage the wave? Also, he stacks passive on spellcast as well...

he also forgot that BoRK being 200 gold cheaper is a huge buff to Aatrox.

It's also not a direct buff, as:

It’s very illustrative that in just a patch with no direct buffs,

In case you missed it:

#no direct buffs,

Reducing the cost of BorK was a buff. It was not a direct one. It was not a change done to affect him, nor was it a change to him directly. Ergo, it was not a direct buff.

Also, the only buff being 200g on a single item isn't enough to jump you from an okay, but overall suboptimal pick to mandatory. Not if you're a healthy champion, at least.

his opponents can dodge his E, and if he uses Q, he's engaging.

You can play around his W, its called pushing him off the wave or harassing him because he MUST auto attack to keep healing.

Proper wave management is nice and all, but what do you do when Aatrox also knows how to properly manage the wave? Also, he stacks passive on spellcast as well...

Aatrox MUST stay in combat to retain his passive, which means he MUST attack the wave to stay in combat, which means he's always pushing.

Reducing the cost of BorK was a buff. It was not a direct one. It was not a change done to affect him, nor was it a change to him directly. Ergo, it was not a direct buff.

he's acting like Aatrox has zero changes that affected him and he's suddenly meta

Yasuo with 1 item is better than a full build Aatrox. But tell me more about stat sticks Riot.
