Sona in 6.9

So was hoping to get other people's thoughts on Sona in the current patch. How do the item changes effect her? Is item 3028 now a go to item? How good is item 3174 ? How does this item function if you shield 3 allies at the same time? Anyone else really missing the extra 25% mana regen on the tier 2 and 3 item 3303 line?

I haven't had the "luck" to play against any of the mage reworked champions as supports, the always fun Zyra or Brand support. So not sure how much better or worse that fight is now.

I'll give it to you straight: Sona is still just as unplayable as the day patch 4.13 went Live. She's still the weakest support in the game, even more so now that Taric and Zyra have both gotten buffed. No indirect change will ever make Sona a playable character, picking Sona is worse than playing a caster minion: she's about as useless as one, but sadly feeds the enemy team considerably more gold for the exact same effort it takes to farm a minion. Even if Rito finally pulled their heads out of their asses and reverted 4.13 like they should have done years ago, there still remains the problem that Nami and Bard are still better copies of her, but at least you wouldn't be intentionally feeding just by locking her in.

support is hard

true.

The new item 3174 is pretty awesome if you want to heal a lot and don't mind losing some damage to do so. Thus far the reduction in mana regen on item 3098 hasn't really seemed to matter all that much, especially since item 3028 is good enough to buy right after Sightstone.

item 3174 : I build it every game. WHEN I build it depends on the enemy comp and what I think I need first, or if I can just build it right away. It heals only one target, and that healing normally goes to the person receiving the other heal from Sona's W (since it heals two) but sometimes I catch the shield healing someone else, so it's like healing 3 people with W instead of 2. The thing can go as far as matching your original heal/shield value, so it literally doubles the effectiveness of the heal from W. Goes best with a bit more ap so you can fill most of it in one Q.

Brand : His passive doesn't hurt as much early, so it's actually a bit easier to fight him if you're dodging shots.

Zyra : Avoid this match-up at all costs. I'm gonna just use Nami now whenever I see Zyra.

unnecessary. so many better items, and if you build right she wont ever run out of mana anyway and if you do just pop a blue.

Why do you think people build Lich and Luden's on Sona, but not D. Cap? Because playing into her scalings is stupid. They're all miserably low (None higher than 50%), but Luden's and Lich have their own bases and scalings that add free damage for her, and all she has to do is land Q, unlike others who can get more damage out, but can't do it as easily.

So in Athene's case, it's the ease of application of using a Q to get like 200 bonus healing, then quickly slamming out W to get 400 health and a shield onto someone rather than 200. You're literally increasing the single-target value of Sona's W by 50% with this one item each time you use Q, then use W (for anyone but you, anyway).

Besides, it's not like I'm building Ardent Censor on her.

Eh, that's a thing, true.

But the bonus healing from Athene's can be applied way more and most adcs build Schimitar anyway.

You don't build mikael for heal alone. The QSS effect combined with the heal is pretty damn amazing. Even if they nerf the heal i'd still buy mikael for the QSS effect alone. It's so clutch in so many teamfights.

I buy the item too...

...just not on Sona. I don't go full NLR item builds or something crazy like that, but I like to have AP on each item, topped with a Lich.

She seems like a perfect candidate for Athene's to me. She loves the cdr, she does a lot of damage and can use the heal procs. It just looks like no one is actually building it on her yet.

So many people playing Sona so defensively. Guess i'm just overly use to playing her hyper aggressively.

item 3174 works so well on her. She is still not the best support, but she is useable now.

People said the exact same thing about Thunderlords and Windspeakers and that proved to be false. Why? Because its an item/mastery/non-direct change. That anyone can buy/take. Like let's say for example Sona 2.0: Nami ; or Sona 3.0: Bard

Indirect changes will never make Sona playable. Because the fact is there are MULTIPLE champions that can utilize the exact same indirect change, but while simultaneously actually having a kit as well.

I would rather have an extra caster minion spawning in bot lane than a Sona on my team. It would contribute exponentially more to the team, whilst feeding the enemy less gold & the game would still be 4v5 either way. Bot lane would still be 1v2 either way.
