"Runeglaive was added to create diversity for ap junglers"

Curling Veigar··61 votes·4,312 views

All it did was make every game have mid ezreal with smite in it.

Quite diverse, huh?

Also, for clarification, I'm not saying it's OP, (annoying as FUCK) but the "diversity" factor is squished when 4/5 games in 5.12 have mid Ezreal with smite.

That Fnatic VS Giants game show just how much broken Runeglaive Ezreal is. That damage is just retarded. Was not the only factor, but still it nearly cost Fnatic their first game.

and next patch runeglaive will get a buff

"Enchantment: Runeglaive Ability Power increased to 50 from 40. Unique Passive Spellblade - damage increased to [100% base attack damage +30% AP] from [75% base attack damage + 30% AP]"

kDrakari4 votes

They buffed it because it wasn't very impressive on Junglers, but they're removing the part where it procs Luden's on today's PBE patch which was at least 50% of the reason Ezreal used it.

Hilltop Sunset1 votes

Except that Ezreal Q WILL still proc Luden's. What they are changing is so that RUNEGLAIVE doesn't proc the Luden's. Doesn't change the fact Ezreal Q still can. They even said ANY ability--AD or AP, physical or magical--is designed to proc Luden's. So it's honestly not going to nerf Ez building both Runeglaive and Luden's.

Gardre2 votes

Ezreal's Q is an "on-hit" ability, meaning it doesn't proc spell effects. It does proc stuff like life steal, BotRK (if you build it), Wit's End bonus damage, etc.

You can read more about on-hits here.

ricklessabandon: "To clarify, it was definitely a bug we missed in development. Luden's Echo will trigger on 'spell damage' which are damage sources that apply effects like the slow from Rylai's Crystal Scepter or the spell vamp from Hextech Gunblade. 'Proc damage' doesn't interact with those effects though, which is why Sunfire Cape doesn't perma-slow when you also buy Rylai's Crystal Scepter. Additionally, Luden's doesn't care about what type of damage is being applied, so Talon's Rake and Olaf's Reckless Swing would trigger the item's effect if they ever had the item (please don't try it with those champions in a real game though)…"

Luden's procs with any and all spells. Ezreal's Q is a spell. His Q will proc Luden's if you use it, but if you were to use W, and then auto-attack someone with the runeglaive passive and Luden's up, Luden's will not proc.

Gangplank's Q is also applies on-hit effects, and that procs Luden's, too!

Edit After doing some more research, I see now that things like GP, Ez, and Yasuo Q technically don't count as spells? So I guess I was wrong! But that seems very odd to me, considering GP q and Yasuo Q can both crit, but Ez Q can't, so I never considered it counting as an auto attack the way I can see Yasuo and GP Q doing so.

Bouffon dAnglais1 votes

it's a buff for junglers who use it, and theres an additional nerf so that the procs from Runeglaive dont proc Luden's/Ryali's/Liandry's which are all on-spell-hit-effects which will weaken this build for ezreal

I am glad more people play him. He is my favourite champ to play. Fun as hell.

SatedCancer5 votes

yea....... i was using ezreal mid as ap before rune glaive and before the challengers did it, i abused it to plat almost diamond on 3 accounts. sad that he will prob get nerfed cause of this.

Jinxish4 votes

People have been playing AP ez mid for a while now anyway??? The problem is that people are now taking Smite, AP Ezreal mid. And it's because of Runeglaive that this is happening. Hopefully, Ez won't get nerfed and only the item will be :P

No, this is good. We can pray that they will get rid of Ezreal's useless Essence Flux and give us a new ability that is useful for both AP Ez and AD Ez.

Zalenor1 votes

It works on ARAM because his E is a great AOE shred (though I usually go AP/Tank more than pure AP), but I don't see it working on SR. Just not worth it.

Zair Umbras2 votes

It works on SR because you can use a Runeglaive to turn his 1k Q into magic damage.

Try Runeglave Dianna in the jungle.

Darcade3332 votes

Runeglave evelynn much better jungler

Legalisskull4 votes

Honestly I'm in the same boat. The changes to the jungle over the last many patches to create diversity have just opened up annoying smite/jungle item lane picks. Reminds me of the Elder Lizard blue ezreal that kicked it off. Changes to the jungle and more specifically it's items need to be looked at more in depth and honestly changed to only allow actual junglers to benefit so these champions are not able to abuse the items in lane. That is unless the goal is to make smite/jungle item the new boots+pot start of previous seasons.

CrazedPorcupine4 votes

the big problem is, runeglaive does nothing to encourage AP mages to jungle. Most of them don't want a lichbane, and want a deathcap... had they done a mini deathcap item, that would've been more appealing to most AP mages in the jungle.

Duke Anax3 votes

Ok, what did I miss about Runeglaive? is the waveclear really that important? Otherwise wouldn't Lichbane Ezreal do more damage?

it makes his q do 100% magic damage

Ancestor0071 votes

I heard they will remove that physical into magic damage. Is that true?

CrazedPorcupine3 votes

no, they're making it so that runeglaive doesn't proc spell effects anymore

(no more lichbane procs from ez Q anymroe)

Ancestor0071 votes

Not cool :(

Bouffon dAnglais3 votes

They change it so Runeglaive procs do not activate spell hit effects, i.e. Ryalis, Luden's. Ezreal's Q isn't changed.

Zair Umbras1 votes

His base Q does 115 plus 110% of his total AD, then you tack on the 100% from the Runeglaive (After the buff) plus the 30% from Runeglaive and another 40% ratio because his Q is a 40%. IT wasn't strong before because it did Physical Damage. You get 100 armor and the base damage was nearly useless because it did pure physical. With Runeglaive making it MAGIC damage, it now scales with his Magic Pen, including a Void Staff.

Solidair33 votes

I have seen 0 games with ezreal mid since the patch began up until now.

Curling Veigar2 votes

ive played 3 games on my smurf and all 3 had ez mid with smite

Drunk Rummate15 votes

That's because people saw it on a challenjour stream and they're sheep.

Give it some time, it really is a good item especially once the buff goes through.

How did you do it when runeglaive wasn't in the game? lol

We call it 'using the PBE'.

They just used Magus, because they were cool.

Cruel Indeed.

Phife1 votes

well, it did add mid ezreal with runeglaive to the game... Before it was just troll. Now its reasonable.

Runeglaive is still weak comparatively to the other jungle items thats why they're buffing it.

Curling Veigar2 votes

you're also forgetting that the item buff will also indirectly buff ezreal.

Rinky Dinky2 votes

Implying ez mid is a concern.

I played a game where the sona took smite and got way more kills than her ADC and did more damage. We won, probably because she went full AP and didn't buy a sightstone (seriously what kind of support doesn't buy sightstone) but she did a lot of damage for a sona.

Slaaneshine7 votes

Sona was obviously the carry in bot lane.

Maybe she wasn't a support?

ChaosThief2 votes

She was, as I like to call them, "Supports"

In other words, the full AP mages that go bot lane for kills.

Champion Skin1 votes

Well you don't actually need Sightstone If you get to level 9 and uppgrade your warding trinket it alone is enough to let you have 3 wards out all the time (and you don't have to go back to base to refill the wards) And of course it only cost 250 gold and doesn't take an item slot

DrathTurtle3141 votes

It also doesn't let you kill wards... In bronze there aren't many wards to kill, but still, it's useful to get a sightstone + oracle's lens.

chipndip12 votes

That's probably the dumbest thing I've heard.

Vision control is incredibly important. The only reason why you wouldn't be bit back for not getting a Sweeper or two on your team is because you're stomping so hard they can't bite you. People say supports get a sight stone because they also need to get sweepers.

Ap Gangplank mid with runeglaive is pretty jokes

Hard4Hamsters1 votes

I think a big factor into why so many people are picking it up is the novelty factor. I'm not saying that Runeglaive Ezreal isn't strong as it does help him in many of the areas he is lacking in, waveclear, Luden's not procing off of Q, mana issues etc, but I don't think his strength is the only reason we are seeing it. (As an aside I think he is REALLY strong right now) A lot of people just like the idea that they are doing something new and exciting, maybe even thinking they are breaking the meta with smite in the mid lane, even though it is kinda the meta right now to take Ezreal mid with smite and they are actually just following a trend.

It is also an exploit. People in League love exploits of design flaws. We've seen this before with the Red Smite Warwicks earlier this season/preseason where his Ult would basically one shot people when he smote them. Right now, Ezreal with Runeglaive is the big exploit. It will probably die off a little after the change to the ability to proc Luden's off of the spellblade on Runeglaive. It would still be pretty strong, but not exceedingly more powerful than AP Ezreal was before this trend. (The buff to Runeglaive may counter this, but if it remains too powerful, Ezreal's AP scalings may need to be hit, sadly)

As far as Runeglaive is concerned. I actually think it's a pretty good item, contrary to what a lot of people think. I do think that they should have kept Magus with Runeglaive as another AP option for those who do not use AAs in their rotation; RIP Fiddles. Runeglaive is just under the mark right now in my opinion and the buffs on the PBE should give it a little more oomph to junglers who might want to buy the item. (I would think giving it 60 AP would have been enough, so we'll see what 50 and a buffed spellblade will do).

Nidalee is almost guaranteed to come back into the meta, both in soloqueue and in competitive, and we might see more AP Eve's rather than the AD version we see right now, mostly in soloqueue. Diana is going to be wrecking solo queue as well and I wouldn't be surprised if she receives nerfs sometime in the future. Elise is troublesome right now as she won't be getting looked at again until 5.14 and she's in a bad spot. It's very debatable whether Runeglaive or Cinderhulk is better on her. My money is on Cinderhulk, but I have seen some Korean/European players make Runeglaive work very effectively (though they are Elise mains, and other Elise mains prefer Cinderhulk over it).

Anyway, that's my opinion on the matter. The item caters more to most of the stronger AP junglers out there (again RIP Fiddle), but it naturally might be strong on champions that thrive on Spellblade effects. We will see what happens in the future. Peace.
