Can we stop pretending that “Runes Reforged” isn’t great?!

Clint Orris··27 votes·2,065 views

I just see all the hate for this system but it makes everything so much simpler while providing a ton of customization.

The old system required so much. We need different rune pages AND masteries for different roles and lanes. God forbid you get into a game with the wrong set up.

Why does everyone hate it?

It's not great cause half the roster doesn't benefit from it while the other half benefits too much from it. It puts the game in a really offbalanced state and is even more cancer than the old rune system.

Nobody likes change, they want the time when there were ~60 champs and you could do full AP Soraka

speak for yourself. I like change when it's for the better. all this new system did was fuck up LoL by destroying any semblance of balance.

The idea is great, but something is wrong when ADCs can utilize pretty much any of the runes while other classes only have 1-2, and in worst case scenario, none. Honestly, whoever made these runes didn't think it through.

rune reforged is great

fact that bruisers have no keystones isn't

Penns3 votes

Every bruiser has a keystone tho hehe

Ahristocats9 votes

keystones that were not made for them

camille is going into comet, illaoi is going into klepto

meanwhile every single other classe has something dedicated to them

Penns3 votes

Yee but Camille is also like the best top laner now with other bruisers like Kled, Illaoi, Fiora and whatever GP is so Id be scared of an opie bruiser keystone like fervor xd

Ahristocats3 votes

kled fiora best toplaner

kappa was forgotten right there

2% pick rate

Penns2 votes

Still pretty much only "bruisers" at the top since 7.24 so my point still stands hehe If u wanna give bruisers a keystone/whole tree then youre gonna have to nerf most of them, idk if that would be a good idea

Ahristocats6 votes

you would not

currently bruisers that are good are all abusing some parts of the system

giving them a system that fits with them will not make them stronger, it would make them even weaker because if illaoi goes for a good keystone on her it will be weaker than kleptomancy

also i would like you to stop pretending that those stats are meaningfull

2% pick rate or 1% pick rate IN A SINGLE region does not mean anything, do you have any idea of how low sample it is? kled is shit renekton is trash darius is garbage 5% pick rate in a single region is still low sample

AirKingNeo13 votes

Daily reminder ADCs have three fucking keystones while bruisers have 0, despite being twice the size in the number of champions.

The Yetii Rider2 votes

'Bruiser' is not a class that Riot recognizes or cares about.

Juggernauts have Grasp of the Undying.

Wardens have Guardian.

Vanguards have Aftershock.

Divers have Electrocute.

None of these classes are suffering. The only issue seems to be how the runes actually function in top lane, which is more a product of how top lane works (a long lane that both players want to stay in for as long as possible with as little jungle interference as possible).

The appropriate thing to do is not for Riot to introduce a new keystone that benefits this playstyle, but for top laners to adapt and change their own meta, playing aggressive ranged champions or powerful divers with Electrocute and Ignite to kill the enemy laner as quickly as possible. This long game farmfest top lane has no place in the current iteration of League, that's not Riot's problem.

lol sure, %max hp damage into magic damage the only champions using grasp atm are maokai and ornn, Darius has a terrible win rate with it and his win rate is higher on phase rush and aftershock

Nasus uses kleptomancy Illaoi uses kleptomancy Udyr uses aftershock

Who else uses grasp?

Divers have Electrocute.

yea let divers going into a tree that makes them squishy af it's as if hecarim and vi were going into thunderlord in 2017, oh wait they did not

they are not, but they do not have a satisfying keystone also if they're not suffering i wonder why i didn't see a darius or renekton since ages

I've seen it on Braum, Udyr, Trundle and Garen.

Illaoi and Nasus can still USE Grasp. The highest win rate or play rate keystone doesn't matter, what matters is that champions have choices. And honestly, if you want champions to have a choice, then the less obvious option has to be BETTER than the most synergistic one, otherwise the champs will always pick the most synergistic.

yea let divers going into a tree that makes them squishy af it's as if hecarim and vi were going into thunderlord in 2017, oh wait they did not

Plenty of champions were going Thunderlords in 2016.

There's nothing wrong with having divers be squishy based on their keystones. They can go full AD and perform just like assassins if the PLAYER wants to. That is a style choice, and aren't we glad that Riot is promoting off-builds? JarvanIV in particular does very well with Electrocute, so does LeeSin .

they are not, but they do not have a satisfying keystone also if they're not suffering i wonder why i didn't see a darius or renekton since ages

Because you play at a completely different elo than I do. I play where the players are. I play where people actually exist. The bottom 85% of the playerbase, the people that actually give Riot their money and numbers. The part that don't whine and bitch about Plat+ statistics that don't mean anything to over 10 million players of the game nor do they reflect any sort of substantial reality.

your entire reply can be summarized by that

balance is meant FOR ALL ELO, and riot said it multiple time if there is a problem in plat+, or in my elo then there is a problem for riot, just like if there is a problem in your elo

The Yetii Rider2 votes

At no point have you described a balance problem. You are describing people playing in different ways than they used to. Darius having a bad win rate at higher elo isn't unusual, he's always been a pub stomper.

Ahristocats5 votes

i see so bruisers not having a great synergy with a dedicated keystone and being forced to abuse other keystones to stay relevant is not a balance problem

but yeah it's fine, at least lee can use elecrocute

New runes systems aren't even runes but just simplified masteries. It's just a bunch of keystones like before but no runes anymore. No customization depends on enemy like armor/mres/cdr runes or anything else.

That's the whole point. New runes were meant to affect your playstyle in meaningful and interactive ways instead of just stat bonuses.

Deathbypie7 votes

I dislike keystones. I disliked them before, and now they are even more powerful, so I dislike them more. Getting runes and keeping only masteries made sense, but it is still in a state where your keystone is the only thing that REALLY matters, and the rest of your choices barely matter.

Because about 1/5th of the entire roaster has no viable rune page and Live Design refuses to nerf Inspiration, Sorcery, or the keystones of Resolve.

hi ìm groot4 votes

My only problem with the new system is that it made worse what they were doing before with the old masteries. In trying to make the mastery choices more impactful and "fun", they were making abilities good at doing things they were not meant to do. Like MF's E is suppose to be a slow with very light damage, not worth it to be a poke, until you have comet or aery, then it becomes a brain dead long range good poke that it was not balanced around doing. Just an example, that goes with alot of abilities.

Blue Moon Wolf4 votes

People forget that Riot have repeatedly said that the Runes will be subject to change till they get in a spot they are happy with, which includes them reworking bad runes, making new runes to fill a condition as needed and removing ones that just don't work out well. Personally, I think the new runes are amazing, they just need to be adjusted a bit for certain champs who don't really have a solid option to play around with.

GayFluffyUnicorn1 votes

And how often does riot keep what they say? Every once in a blue moon (ehehehe) maybe. Two months and already and so far a few nerfs. Welp.

Blue Moon Wolf1 votes

yea, Two months. Two. Both of which had holidays breaking up work flow. It isn't that easy to figure out what to do about a very important part of the games like runes. In some companies, it can take 6 months to get something as simple as "how this character will open a door" figured out so a designer can get to work on it (No, not an exaggeration). Two months at most is likely enough time to evaluate the runes, figure out how changes of said runes may or may not affect champs and get a plan together that hopefully improves things and that's not counting the other things on their plates.

Getting those changes implemented, testing them out (cause they for some reason need to test them out before putting stuff out on the PBE) and seeing what adjustments need to be made. Now I'm not saying they should have said "they'd get things updated by Pre-Season" cause honestly that's not going to happen and was more likely wishful thinking on their part, but these Runes are in fact a permanent fixture in league now. Riot will have to keep updating them.

They know certain champs lack a good rune path, they know certain champs work too well with other runes and their ultimate goal is to give as many champs as possible unique options to work with, if not at LEAST one optimal path that works well with them. Even if we didn't see any changes within the next 4 months, Riots track record shows they won't just leave Runes alone, especially when it replaced 2 systems that they had before and one of which they would make frequent changes to in the past.

Because it actually provides less options. They are trying to remove the learning curve required to play the game. This makes it more friendly for bads, casuals, and younger kids, it's a marketing scheme.

Pretty much. Seen that coming, the same happened for me in SWTOR when they removed the talent trees and changed how the stats worked because and that is a nearly literal quote "it is unfair for new, unexperienced or casual gamers that they fall so hard behind to people who take time to customize their gear and talent specs". You dont fucking say, people who invest time to learn their shit are better at their shit. From then on it only went downhill. Nerfing every fuckin Operation/Dungeon so that every trashcan can completely ignore mob and boss mechanics to get the mounts and BiS gear.

Yep, and the EXACT same thing happened to WoW. And guess what it was the EXACT same person who implemented all those changes that made the changes to league..

Not at all, they just implement scummy tactics for reasons that alienate my specific demographic(s). Riot has gone downhill and part of my cynicism is because I remember when Riot actually interacted and listened to the community and implemented their input (which riot admits is no longer the case). But my anger and frustration is more directed at the corporate mentality takeover of the gaming culture in general.

These are all things that have been done countless times, and more relevantly are an increasing trend in gaming (riot just hopped on the bandwagon is all). It is just business and I understand that. I do point the finger at specific names but that's just because that is their job to be the figurehead and responsible for the changes that I disagree with, and this is my platform to voice my opinion.

It does irk me because I have seen this exact practice and other things happen to other games and ruin them, that's actually the reason I started playing League in the first place. I do think that the way they mislead people is scummy, but that is just business and corporate culture (been in it for years and I am used to it). All in all league remains one of the better games on the market.

There are a lot of reasons. Like fate fire mentioned, change makes people uneasy (and they aren't equipped a lot of the time to deal with that feeling). It's mainstream to hate on things right now. Makes you seem like you know something. just to name a couple. Personally. I like the convenience more.

Have you been living on the moon or something? People have been explaining exactly why it's terrible for ages now and you're still asking why? How about you just read it?

GeminiRune2 votes

Personally I like the change. I'm one for versatility and uniqueness in playstyle. The old RM system made me feel stuck in either building it like a random lol guide or get scrutinized by players who decide to look at all of their teammates setups. Happened a few times just this season and that's personally why I decided not to pursue a Ranked reward.

Magical Zoe2 votes

I hate it because they didn't even give us more rune pages, or at least lower the price for more rune pages. The presets just take up space and are hindering to use on certain champions.

  6. THERE IS A SHIT TON OF NOOB BAIT RUNES
Xonra2 votes

It isn't...horrible, but pretending it is great is just lying to yourself to simply have a counter response to those that vocally hate it.

It is just tweaking masteries, adding in some new masteries (for better or worse in some cases), tossing in some stats from runes sort of, and knocking the balance all out of whack pretty hard.

If this system wasn't already in the game for how ever many years now, maybe I could get on board another few percentages, but as it stands it isn't new or fresh. It is slapping a new coat of paint on something in typical pre season fashion, and while it solved the problem of IP sink, it is still a mess and still being changed although VERY slow now. The preseason isn't actually that much longer and they are still talking about adding in more keystones.

I don't hate it at all, I really don't, but I wish it wasn't packaged let alone treated like the best thing Riot has ever released.

Taliyah Supp2 votes

I dont have any fun with it. If it just replaced the masteries id be fine with it. But champs like Janna and Soraka are early trash now since i cant get 25% cd at lvl 1 anymore. 12s cd for Janna shield? Eh.

Individual builds are not possible anymore. I used to run a HP, CD, AP rune mix for Taliyah, now ill have to choose a cookie cutter buid #sad #shibbycriminal

I guess the system is great for people who dont care about custmization and just want some quick fun.

Athenes Lulu1 votes

It gave things like tanks and supposedly "weak early champs" free damage and an excuse to no longer be "weak" early game.

That's a reason enough to make people hate new runes, but that's more on a topic of the runes itself is the issue.

And î oop1 votes

the only thing thats a bit of for me is that it still doesnt really do wonder to champs that have unique kits like ivern, skarner, camile..., sol gets mentioned here quite a lot but i think the glacial augment is amazing since it makes your must item ( sry cant remember name but it shoots icicles on active ) fire aditional freeze rays and it can replace rylai so it gives you another item slot to :)

Parmupaevitus1 votes

If you call being chained to 1-2 keystones from the same tree "customization" then its fine. The old system actually let you "customize" your stats in runepages, masteries chained you to a keystone, but runes let you play with stats. The stat game has been removed, now all thats left is going to lolalytics.com/champion/your_champion_name scroll down, see keystone win rates, pick the one thats over 50% and you have fully "customized" your setup. The rune system is dead, I'm back to starcraft.
