Playing against Gnar is so exciting.

Can't engage on him because of his stupid spammable slow + jump and can't engage him on melee because well, he will outtrade you. Also he has ALL the tools to run away while ranged, and ALL the tools to chase someone while melee. Really interesting to play against

They do. So does Irelia, and Gangplank if decent. Want to know who REALLY shits on Gnar, though? Yorick. One of the hardest counters in the game. Like GP into Pantheon level.

Anyway. Gnar has the lowest range in the game in mini for early game. Hard engage and you'll kill him easily because his base stats are really terrible. Conversely, Mega-Gnar is one of the slowest champions in the game. Just walk away from him.

Problem solved.

Isn't gnar's range approx. the same as Pantheons stun?

Pantheon's stun is 600 units while Gnar's AA at level 1 is 400.

I don't know about you but I don't want to play a game where, to beat a certain champion, I have to be an exactly different champion. I can't always counter somebody, especially not in blind pick. So if the only answer you have to play against Gnar is "Play this and this champion", then you, good sire, are talking out of your god damned arse.

I want to be able to win against Gnar playing MY champion, not the one that's good against him.

You don't want counter pick strategy to be a part of the game? I honestly don't know what to say to that. Garen is my favorite champ to play, should he be able to 1v1 an Assassin? Should Garen be able to take on an ADC and a Support together and win the trade? I think no... so I counter pick depending on my lane.

If you want to run a lane that countering isn't super necessary I recommend ... ARAM.

Counter picking isnt necessary even in the state of things now, it just yields different results varying in intensity. Having a greater champion pool is great because the greater your pool the easier your games will be due to varying advantages between possible matchups. However if you main a champ, lets say Garen, theres nothing wrong with that if you are able to understand that you will experience situations where you will feel very underwhelming or bullied. Thats where you have to get a lot better at the champ you want to main to overcome that inheent weakness or just concede to the meta and pick up a fair number of champions, at the very least 4 per lane.

Why wouldn't Garen be able to 1v1 an Assassin? If he can't, that's pretty tragic.

You're right, it was a bad example. Akali at 6 is the only one I have a hard time soaking if she's fully charged.

I'm not saying I want any role to be able to win against any role, but I think it's unfair that some toplaners can only be defeated by other toplaners, so to speak. Even though positions hardly matter and roles in themselves are a bit of a shady categorization...

All I want is to be able to go into blind pick, see my lane opponent and not have to go "Oh Jesus Christ it's that dude I've already lost." I want to have a fair chance to fight back and not accept defeat simply because his kit, as skilled or unskilled as the player may be, completely nullifies my chances of retaliation...

i have no issues against the champ, but i play riven. just bait out his jump by gapclosing and walk away with my shield up, then all in him while it's on cooldown. ezpz.

Sometimes the best way to win a lane is not to play. Let them push out and farm under the tower, you'll lose CS overall, but without feeding the enemy laner you'll have won overall advantage for your team. Even in ranked if I'm counter picked I then know that my job is not to snowball, but to play cautious and win via good jungle plays and other lanes winning out.

I play gnar very often/ purchased the little guy for 7800 then refunded my justicar Aatrox(first skin i ever bought) for his dino skin with full knowledge of his skillcap, my opponents in the first 2 weeks however, did not. For the first 2 weeks i stomped with gnar and lost 1 out of 27 games, the only game where i wasn't gnar was garen top vs gnar, and i got stomped but the worst gnar player NA who build trinity force + gauntlet. Even as ryze i struggled because of his horrible early and mid game plus mega gnar. Nowadays it's obvious gnar is no stomper, mini gnar is the squishiest champ in the game and starts out with 325 movespeed that scales as he levels, mega gnar is an all in full cc bursty aoe tank that will only catch ryze or annie in a chase. Mini gnar gets all his damage from his hyper(which is why i go attack speed AD combo and never grab a trinity) and will lose every trade imaginable if not fed, if fed, will lose that advantage very quickly, because only a good gnar knows how to use a fed gnar which includes managing rage and killing splitpushers that aren't ahead. Long story short, gnar only wins against a lane opponent who doesn't understand him, my tip is to watch his rage and initiate with cc using a gap closer for when he tries to hop away and make sure he either has low rage or has it on cd (it goes on a 15 sec cd after he transforms where he cant accumulate any rage) gnar is the most balanced champion recieving buffs and nerfs that overall, left him where he was on release, a high skillcap teamwork focused squishy poker/bulky teamfigher.

He takes skill because he has a skillshot though!

A smart gnar will outplay you if you choose a champion he can capitalize on. He tends to push the lane to harass you though unless he wants to miss cs so have your jungler help out. Also, watch his transform. Play around it and punish him for bad hop initiates should he try one.

and then late game comes and he has 300 armor but because he is a ranged top laner he gets a fucking %hp damage because it wasnt hard enough trying to catch him, now if you fuck up or he es away he can come back after u use ur combo and spam his retarded ass aas to get an EXTRA movement speed buff on top of his e. fucking disgusting

I'm no Gnar expert, and this is just my observations from playing as him every once in a while:

In mini form, Gnar's only strength is stopping engages. If you can get him to blow his E, ganking him or even just engaging on him solo is much much easier. His Q poke is fairly weak, because not only does it not do much damage, its also fairly easy to dodge, and it has very weak ability to poke through waves, because it will begin to retract as soon as it hits something. His AA poke may be unavoidable, but with his short AA range he becomes much easier to engage upon when he tries to use his AAs to poke.

In mega form, Gnar's abliites are heavily telegraphed. This is his biggest weakness. While it may be hard to dodge a Q point blank, dodging one from range gives you the ultimate opportunity to engage upon him while the majority of his damage and one of his CCs is on an extended cooldown. Without the slow from Q, sidestepping his W and E become easy.

I'm not saying he's not broken or anything - his high banrate does seem to suggest there is something wrong with him. I'm just offering some advice on how to better play against him.

The trick with gnar is he is very oppressive or does nothing. He is probably one of the most inconsistent champs in the game. Once he's ahead he has so many ways to lock you down and gap close that you will never come back from it. He can dive you under tower then bounce back out to safety.

However, the same is true in reverse. Nothing he does helps him survive. If he is losing he will never catch up. Ever.

That's the risk you take when you play gnar. I love to play him, but in normals. Much like vel'koz. Very fun to play, but tough in ranked.

Hulking out and smashing opponents with boulders is one of the more fun things to do in this game. :) Gnar

You want to win while making no effort to adapt? Interesting dichotomy.
