Let's talk about Morellonomicon

item 3165

I feel like this unholy book of power has changed purposes since the introduction of grievous wounds being able to be applied by other champions than mages.

We were given item 3123 which is a very cheap and effective way for an ADC to counter a heal support in the early game, which can be built into item 3033 which effectively counters any form of lifesteal, healing, regen, and heavy armor builds. How much fun is it to play a match as DrMundo when regen is his biggest strength, and then an enemy champion comes along with Mortal Reminder and simply shreds you?

Now we also have item 3076 for tanks to build in the early game if they are being harassed by someone with heavy lifesteal or regen. Sure, it's only a one second window, but sometimes that's all you need to get a quick burst of damage to come out higher on the trade. Also, it would be applied on every basic attack, meaning that you are effectively countering lifesteal during extended fights if an enemy continues to target you.

So what does any of this have to do with our favorite go-to book for Cooldown Reduction, AP, and Mana? Well, it's actually quite simple. You see, the grievous wounds items that ADs and Tanks get can be applied at any time. Executioner's Calling and Mortal Reminder even apply the debuff on any physical damage, meaning that certain abilities can apply it on multiple enemy champions at once. However, Morellonomicon only applies grievous wounds if the target has 35% health or less.

Why is this a problem? Let's say the enemy team can out sustain your ability combos as a mage and you cannot drop their health below the threshold. Your abilities are now on cooldown, and they can simply lifesteal, heal, or regen their way closer to full health. Morello is especially ineffective against tanks with very high health with a lot of sustain or regen in their kits, especially Illaoi and DrMundo . If a fed Draven with item 3072 is shredding his way towards your base, it won't be a mage that will stop him unless they can either outplay or hit him with some hard cc.

I feel like mages could use a bit of love in the anti-sustain department. I don't think it would break the meta to let Morello apply grievous wounds like the other items and simply work at any amount of health. At the very least, the threshold needs to be raised to 50% so that sustain champions can't simply walk all over a group of mages. A lot of players have had trouble countering sustain since item 3812 was introduced, and I think it's time to change Morellonomicon in order to properly fit the current meta which is in favor of heavy sustainability. As it stands now, the only reason to buy it is for the 20% CDR.

Morrelo osnt designed to a counter to sustained based champs. It's supposed to prevent champions from easily healing up after you burst them down, it's why it has a threshold on it
