When Quill Coat came out in season 4

I started building Spirit of the Ancient Golem on some top laners like Volibear, Shyvana, and Mundo, and people laughed at me. The 25% was useful though, so I ignored that criticism.

LOOKS WHO'S LAUGHING NOW. IT'S FUCKIN' META TO DO THAT NOW.

Just saying though, this 25% hp isn't a new concept to this game, if they were able to have quill coat be balanced, Cinderhulk shouldn't be a huge problem. Just please don't nerf junglers even more because laners are abusing jungle items. Unless it gets to the point where there's five smite, the jungle items aren't the ones who need to keep getting nerfed.

The problem isn't really that they get extra health from Cinderhulk. The problem is the combination of Cinderhulk and Red smite together that turns any top laner that builds it into an un-duelable god that you can't stop from pushing and constantly counterjungling your top side jungle.

Shyvana tried to do this to me. I picked yi top and she had to stay in lane or risk losing tower. She left once I got tower and half of the second one. So the "counter" to the couter jungle top lane smite is a split pushing champ like yi or tryndamere.

A partial counter is a champion who can push, not just a split pusher.

ancient golem netiher gave you a doueling summner on 75sec cd with two stacks, nor a stronger version of the sunfire dot...

If they nerf the strat, it'll probably only be slightly. It has clear strengths and weaknesses, and isn't really crowding out much. It might become the standard way of playing Shyvana, and maybe Hecarim, but that isn't bad in and of itself.

No, it was indeed 25% bonus HP back then, not 30%.

quill didn't have a passive burn. Quill was never going to be meta.

There is a huge difference between buying Quill Coat/SotAG back then and buying Skirmisher's Sabre w/ Cinderhulk now. The Skirmisher's Sabre w/ Cinderhulk makes top laners incredible duelists with the upgraded Challenging Smite as well as the Sunfire Cape passive that damages minions/monster as well as champions. Quill Coat/SotAG gave top laners 0 dueling potential since the damaging passive only affected monsters.

well the tenacity was a big help...

Except that the tenacity was removed from SotAG when the 25% bonus hp was added.

Quill coat was the single best jungle item ever. For a tank, it provided armor, return damage, health and mana regen, a free ward, for 700 gold. I'm glad that cinderhulk has embraced much of that.

The difference is you can now build Stalker's or Skirmisher's Smite. Meaning you dont have a wasted summoner spell.

Before you got nothing except the stats. Making it significantly less value.
