Support in Ranked feels futile.

I love playing thresh and morgana, there's nothing better than that perfect catch or peeling 3 people with a single flay, but in a lot of games it just feels like I cant do much. If their top laner is 8/0, all you can do is get a tad of CC on them before they eventually go straight through it and 1 hit you adc. If you steamroll bot lane, but their mid has 7 kills, they're going to 1 hit your adc with some invulnerable or flash like ability. When your team simply doesn't have the damage numbers to kill the other team, you can flay 5 people into your box but you're still going to lose the fight 90% of the time. If you're an above average adc, you will do tons of damage most games. If you're an above average mid, you will control the game or destroy the enemy adc most games. If you're an above average top, you will win your lane and become an unstoppable force most games. If you're an above average jungle, you will get your lanes ahead most games and compensate for lanes that are doing bad. If you're an above average support, you hit your skill shots, pick good fights, and pray to God your adc and team follow you up, have the damage to kill them, didn't get steamrolled in lane, and prioritize the right targets.

A lot of the times I play support I feel like, "well I just peeled 3 people going for my adc, but our entire front line just died instantly so GG."

Supports have such a low effect on the game mathematically compared to other roles too. top and mid lane, its about your skill and your opponent's skill, and warding. Support, your skill is only 25% of the lane, and you potential damage is even less. In team fights your effect on the fight is even less than what it is in lane, even with all your CC landed.

IMO support is probably one of the hardest roles to play well in the game, you have to time things perfectly, land skill shots through minions and 2 people in the lane, ward the right spots at the right time, and repeatedly save the brat in lane with you that always overextends and positions like hes mundo. Yet for all the work and mind games a support has to pull off, they are rewarded far less than any other role. No matter how good you are your affect on the game is severely limited by your team, and playing support just feels like 50% hard work 50% praying for a good team.

Maybe it's the ridiculous amount of buffs and snowballing in the game now, but landing a great hook or combo doesn't matter when your team is down 20/10 and they have 3 dragons, where as if you have great top or mid lane mechanics and win your lane most games, you can have a massive outcome.

Bottom line, I believe that support players should have as much of an impact on the game as any other role. If you are trying to climb and think you are better than the average of your rank, then don't play support to climb, because you just aren't as effective as you would be elsewhere. And that's a shame, because playing support is fun, and feels good, Riot has just left the role feeling like the red-headed step child of the game.

i miss playing support but if you're trying to get promoted you cannot do that as support. if you think you can outplay your current division you need to carry yourself (& your team) out of your current division.

i suppose this is another perk of dynamic queue but idk. try a botside jungle/raid support?

if the score is 20/10 and you are top you still can do nothing unless you picked some very specific champs.

support is extremely crucial because - if you suck, you lose the game instantly. you can't solo win the game but you can solo lose it.

If you think playing support that leads teams hard, you should look at those who don't. Or ones that thrive based on following up Taric .

For some if you have garbage mechanics, fine. But if you have garbage tactics, you're gonna have a very hard time.

The impact of a support in low elo is kinda strange. Sometimes it's a blessing and sometimes it's a curse. You are really depended on your team performance to win it and your impact will decrease the more total kills their are. You can't really do anything against a 8-0-0 yasuo on 10 minutes. And even if you manage to kill him you will have to spend all your resources in order to pull it off resulting into losing somewhere else.

I think Thresh Morgana Annie are probaly the best 3 where you can impact the game on a higher level because of the fact they provide damage, cc & mobility. And both have their own strengths:

  • Annie is the one you pick if you known your adc is going to feed. Your team will be lacking damage the entire game. So Annie would become suddenly a must. The problem with Annie is that her mobility & objective controle is kinda low. If she has to roam a lot her impact will drop massively. But she's a good Vayne killer so that's something right.
  • Thresh is the roaming god while still providing some form of tankness for your team. He diverse so he will make it into any teamcomp. His weakness is that his strengths are really depended on his adc & his jungler. You can pull off some amazing ganks with your jungler. But if he doesn't known what he's doing your resources will just go to waist. It will also be harder to get in flay range when the enemy is mobile. Something you can pull of a Q. But against a good opponement the E slow will be needed to land the Q properly.
  • Morgana is an intressting one, she's basicly the counterpick for tank supports like Braum, Thresh, Blitz, Nautilus. Her weakness is that she is skillshot depended what can make her struggle against mobile champions.
