Help me make a season 6 champion pool!

Hi,

So as most of you know, season 6 is going to be different: we're pretty much going to queue up choosing 2 roles and will be assigned one of the two roles. So there's no more need to have champions and rune pages set up for every role, you just need it for 2 roles.

With that said, I want to start working on a champion pool now, for: Primary ADC Secondary TOP

My problem is I've previously mained 1 or 2 champions in each role and just filled whatever role the team wanted with those champions. So it's a huge change of pace for me to focus on just two roles, but obviously is what I need to do.

I have over 19k IP at the moment, so I can buy several champions to fill out my lineup. I'm currently Gold 5 if that helps any way (e.g. you think certain champs are better at certain elos)

My current ADCs: Play a lot and am decent with: Jinx, Caitlyn Own: Tristana, Kalista, Vayne, Ashe, Sivir

Interested in: Miss Fortune - obviously really strong right now and getting nerfed. I believe she deals some magic damage, and I'm missing that in my ADC picks. Corki - Same as above, except a bit weaker but not getting nerfed in 6.1 at least. Downside is he's much more spell-reliant and less auto-attack reliant (which is my preference) Quinn - I find her blind REALLY annoying to play against, so I want to use it myself Lucian - He seems to have great burst potential which I'm lacking as an ADC pick

My Current TOPs: Play a lot top and am decent with: Jarvan 4, Gnar (I typically build Black Cleaver in to full tank on both, occasionally titanic Hydra later on J4 if I'm leading) Good at the champion as a jungler: Hecarim, Amumu Other owned options: Nasus, Jax, Tahm Kench, Rammus, Maokai, Malphite, Kayle, Mundo, Garen, Poppy

Interested in: Lissandra: Most of my top laners aren't AP and she seems like a reasonable option for when Kayle isn't a good option or becomes weak Gangplank: Seems strong and is damage oriented (which I lack in my top laners) Tryndamere / Olaf / Pantheon / Fiora: Would only want 1, I think I'm lacking a damage-oriented carry top laner Lulu: I don't really have a utility top laner, and also is AP

So, what I'm looking for here: I will definitely be playing Jinx/Cait/J4/Gnar as they're my strongest champions. Otherwise, I want to fill out my champion selections around this for a few reasons:

  1. Meta shifts
  2. Team comp.
  3. Counters.

Any of the following is appreciated: Add 2+ champions to one of the roles (or both). These do not need to be champions I already own or are interested in. Just any champion that fits the role. Briefly explain why this will fill out the role for me. List what matchups or team comps those champions should be picked in to. Keep the total cost within ~20k IP so I can get started :)

I'm more than willing to throw back advice to questions in repayment of your advice here (only if I have a clue of course) :)

Id really recommend ekko. He can fill every role if you itemize right.

I'm a no for ADC Ekko. Maybe, but not willing to try it...

Top Ekko I'd be willing to give a go - AP option with some unique utility. Any idea what matchups he'd excel in?

Crossette1 votes

There's a hybrid offtank build for Ekko that I've seen work wonders top lane.

  1. Guinsoo's Rageblade
  2. Iceborn Gauntlet
  3. Merc Treads/Ninja Tabi
  4. Dead Man's Plate
  5. Hextech Gunblade/Blade of the Ruined King
  6. Titanic Hydra

Build sounded good until Titanic Hydra... you've got one health item in that build, why exactly is titanic good for a 6th item?

Crossette1 votes

I wouldn't say it absolutely needs to be Titanic Hydra, but if you've gotten to that point in the game where the enemy team is on even grounds with you it helps to have the durability and burst in that one item.

In any other case, something such as item 3068 or item 3102 can definitely be better.

I would say go with gangplank for a carry damage dealing top laner, due to the fact that his farming midgame is godly and can take out half the health of a mage or adc midgame with a good barrel, and is a great splitpusher with his ability to escape and clear waves with his barrels, and help his team with his ult, oh and Ammumu and Rammus aren't top laners. I would recommend Singed personally for an AP/utility/tank top laner, though he has a lot of bad matchups (Singed vs Gnar and Teemo is almost as painful as playing Ryze with a high ping) and has a very unique playstyle that is unlike any other champ in the game that may make him hard to learn. Anyway, Singed works best with junglers that have a lot of early game pressure due to the map control he creates just by forcing the enemy jungler to camp him when he is proxying, so pick him with junglers like Lee sin, and pick him against junglers like Master Yi to slow down his farming. He also deals way more damage then most people expect once you get his ult and two Dorans rings, so play safely and get a little bit of harass by flinging them into poison and getting in some autos, then recall when you get to level 6 and 800 gold and buy the items and tp back and wait for them to get a bit to close to you and use your ult and fling them into your w (hopefully into your turret) and try to kill them or force them out of lane, then push out the wave and start farming between turrets with your q while staying away from your opponent and keeping the jungle warded so you can run when the jungler or mid laner tries to stop you, oh and ignore what I said if your against someone like Darius or Teemo, they will just kill you if you try anything like that, just farm up safely. For gangplank, I'm actually not sure what team comps he works with or his lane matchups so I cant help you there, but I can tell you how you should play. First of all, use your q to harass and safely farm in lane, use your w for when your cced, and place barrels in the brush and throw another one down next to it and shoot it when somebody gets close to them to hit them with the barrel explosion. Also watch the mini map to see if there are good opportunities for your ult. Once you get to teamfights, throw down barrels and try to hit people with them with the chain explosions, not much to say. Once you can reliably oneshot minons with your barrels, you have become a god, use this to clear waves in seconds and start splitpushing when your team isn't grouping and you know its safe and laugh as you get extremely fed just by farming and deal an insane amount of aoe damage in teamfights and shredding towers if they leave you alone for ten seconds.

I cant say much on adc due to the fact that I don't play adc anymore.

Sincerely, a silver 2 player who probably isn't the best source, but is close to your rank.

Thanks.

I mentioned Amumu just because he theoretically could top, but as I mentioned was a jungle pick for me, I've never taken him top. I've seen Rammus top work well, but agree it's off meta.

Thanks for the details on Singed. I've always wondered, how exactly does proxying work? I've never had it done successfully against me - if I see a singed I come to lane with the minions expecting a proxy and he never tries it. I've seen allies get messed up by it (I understand the premise, you get a full wave of CS and xp, your opponent either has to match by just farming at tower or can come fight you but gives up his minion gold and xp and isn't guaranteed to get you).

Also with no stealth wards anymore what do you do? You get 1 yellow ward which is near useless at the start. I'm assuming you start corrupting potion. So you're without vision for a lot of the time you're proxying... Maybe if you started a pink... but I just feel like it requires a fair bit of luck to work. Assuming you have the ward, where do you put it? Aren't there at least 4 ways to get to you, and you need a good amount of notice to go execute don't you?

MistroTTC1 votes

Well first of all, proxying at level one isn't very good anymore as you can only get two waves which takes away its entire purpose of giving you a second item early on, so only do it against a Nasus or Heimerdinger, you can still do it when you get some levels on your q, but its harder when minions wont follow you into the jungle. Anyway, starting corrupting potion isn't very good, its not terrible, buy your better off with a cloth armor or null magic mantle (though go with a dorans ring if your not sure whose top and you may fight and ap or ad champ). Your level one proxy is extremely riskey and NEVER do it if the enemy jungler is up top or is mia, and go for and execute immediately if you don't see the enemy mid laner. By midgame however, its extremely deadly if the enemy picked a champ how cant farm under turret or catch you, as it means you can easily out farm them, and a free farming singed is one of the most infuriating things in the game to fight if it goes on for awhile. I would watch Chimpso's guides on youtube as he is in diamond and explains things better then I can, though a lot of his older guides and videos are dated because of preseason changes. I also mained Draven before I switched to support as my secondary role, so I can give you advice if you want to learn him, though he feels a lot weaker because of the item changes.

Not going to be biased:

I think you should play Kennen Kennen Kennen Kennen Kennen Kennen Kennen and just to change up the picks Kennen

ValyrianBlade1 votes

If I take him top is it better to go AP or AD? Or more of a bruiser? What matchups?

Crossette1 votes

AP, and there aren't many matchups that you can lose with experience. Even if you do fall behind, farm for a bit and then ult in the middle of a teamfight and stun their whole team.

AD Kennen isn't something that should have left the LCS.

biobirbbyy1 votes

I only play him AP

Bard top

ValyrianBlade1 votes

What makes him strong there?

Crossette1 votes

Not a lot other than having tons of experience with the champion and the fact that his utility outmatches most other champions in the game. He's near impossible to towerdive if he has ult up and he's also extremely hard to chase or fight. Best/worst part is, you can either go AD bruiser (which has pretty bad early game tbh), juggerbard (which is pretty alright) or AP offtank (which I haven't made a build for yet) but he certainly has potential. I'll post my AD bruiser build if you want to try it sometime.

For top lane, Irelia, Akali, Karma and Shen seem pretty powerful for me.

Irelia is great if you rush Titanic Hydra and then go tank/bruiser as you mentioned. If you have balls, rush Rageblade xD

Akali is a great Magic Damage Assassin, but because of her mixed damage, she is difficult to counter. Rush Gunblade most of the times, and when you have a rough time, buy a partially defensive item instead (Hexdrinker is good if you are in trouble, Zhonya's Armguard is good in general). Play smart around your enemies, and you will have fun with her. Also, the new masteries kinda favour hybrid champions ;)

Karma has a powerful early game, deadly poke, the best shield for spamming, and small weaknesses that you can play around. It takes some time to understand her, but you will understand that she has the power to bully her lane opponents and potentially nullify them. Also, if your jungler helps you, you can be a deadly weapon.

Shen is just a great tank and has great map pressure. Also, he is pretty safe if you know how to play him.

About the ADCs I can tell you that Miss Fortune feels indeed powerful, while Caitlyn, Tristana and Jinx are really REALLY fun to play, and Sivir still has a lot of potential in the right hands. If I would choose something really safe, I would choose Caitlyn. If you play her perfectly, I don't really see what problems you can really have outside of a bad support. The second choice would be personally Sivir if you like her... Pretty safe to play, and great burst combos ( Yay Thunderlord's!). The new Yomumu kinda rocks on her too!

Thanks!

Irelia and Shen are actually two picks I was interested in during late s4 / early s5 and sort of forgot about.

Karma sounds like a reasonable option. Basically an "instead of lissandra" pick, right? So I guess my question would be, what makes Karma better top than Liss?

For ADC I agree. I love Caitlyn and Jinx! I feel like MF will fall off, her high win rate, high pick/ban rate, really low experience rate is a really unsustainable combo. She's OP but won't stay that way. I'm not a huge fan of Sivir, I guess mostly because her ult requires me to give my team the ability to engage and them to choose to use it (I want control over the use of my ultimate :P). I've had good times with her previously (s4) picking her in to teams like Morgana Support and Ahri mid (basically E their engage then crush them 1v1), but even then I feel like she can't safely siege towers which is my preference as an ADC (hence the love for Caitlyn).

The difference between Lissandra and Karma is safety, carry potential and versatility.

Karma has long range poke, a shield that offers mobility on demand, a tether that snares if you fully engage on somebody, and an ult that offers you powerful damage in the early game, and other powerful options in the mid-late game. Karma from many points of view is a safe pick that can bully her opponent and snowball hard, by poking, or even bursting opponents, while not really giving them a chance to touch her. As a power curve: 1. Early Game: Powerful Damage/Decent Utility/Good CC for ganks 2. Mid Game: Powerful to Deadly Damage/Good Utility/Mediocre CC 3. Late Game: Mediocre to Good Damage/Powerful Utility/Mediocre CC

Now Lissandra, I had fun with her a lot of time, but I find some difficulties really annoying for her. Overall, she has medium ranged poke if she uses minions, low range snare around herself, a delayed flexible dash, that can reach an amazing range, and her ult, a powerful weapon to engage the enemy or to start a teamfight. Her weaknesses are the fact that she is low ranged for a mage, mana-hungry, partially squishy and partially immobile (her E CD is enormous in the early game). Karma partially solves her problems because of the kit she has, while Lissandra needs levels and items to actually cover them. Because of her partial immobility and low range, Lissandra has to choose carefully when she wants to engage her enemies and play a bit safer in general. Her power curve from my point of view is something like this: 1. Early Game: Mediocre Damage/Good CC for ganks 2. Mid Game: Good Damage+DPS/Powerful CC. 3. Late Game: Decent to Powerful Damage/Good to Powerful CC. She is really based on her team for increased potential.

Note: Lissandra's utility is totally based on her CC, while Karma's is based more on the combination of her shield with her CC.

As a conclusion, Karma is more of a Poke Mage that easly develops Utility, allowing her to both protect her allies and engage her enemies, while Lissandra is a CC oriented Mage, that loves to engage enemies (and can be their death) but suffers if she can't reliably do that. As I said, Karma's Damage starts high, but drops easly after Mid-Game and starts to have more Utility, while Lissandra needs levels to scale better from both sides.

Edit: I don't say one is better than the other, I just mention their advantages and how safe it is to pick them. Both of them are great, but you have to find when they really shine in certain teamcomps.

ValyrianBlade1 votes

That's a great analysis - thanks!

Will need to think about them both. The better choice may well be dependent on whether my allies are hyper carries that need a strong early ally, or early game bullies that need someone to help them win teamfights later on.

Anu3isII1 votes

Hey ! Sorry for my late response, but I personally think you should test both of them before you really come to a conclusion.

Both of them have fantastic kits, with some cool strategies, and I think it is worth the experience.

Also, I don't think you really need to limit your champion pool. Sometimes having more choices is better than playing perfectly 2-3 champions. If they become meta, you can be screwed really hard...

ValyrianBlade1 votes

My limit is moreso: a) Champion costs b) my lack of time to practice too many champions.
