Orianna the "utility mage".

Every time I see her, she' 3 shotting someone with qwr, or even if fed, qwAA. She's always played, for like the last 3 years. Idk, I hate when someone calls her utility mage, when she has a lot more dmg than other mages. Annoying as fuck to lane against, qwaa's you then shields and runs away, rince and repeat till you're dead.

I've always said it, she's been overpowered for seasons and never got gutted, has been dominant in the midlane in esports forever but somehow she always slips through any meaningful nerf, her CDs are no existant, especially her ult.

She's been permaban in the midlane for me for ages, i rather deal with other monstrosities in the botlane than play against that shit.

AirKingNeo4 votes

At least both teams have monsters bot lane so it equalizes.

Paladin 0f Life29 votes

Have you played her when slightly behind? she is a utility mage

A Dizzy Lulu19 votes

Also one of if not the best comeback champ with her ult.... xd? 10k gold behind and this one ability she has can completely swing the game in your favor

TotalJerk16 votes

The damage on ult when behind is laughable. It's only really great for comebacks in super high elo as well because you can't expect the average soloQ team to properly set it up or follow up on it.

PePsiLemoNN30 votes

Even bronze 5 players watched enough youtube videos to know that when Ori gets a 5 man ult you jump there and spam your shit lol

TotalJerk6 votes

They usually are either

  • Distracted
  • Not in position to followup
  • Too slow to react

Almost. It depends on how far her team is and how far into the game you are

SteelMankind8 votes

Playing Ori from behind is pretty fucking painful. At only 150/225/300 + 70% AP, her ult does mediocre damage compared to other mage ults, and your team can't really capitalize on the CC since they're behind.

And yeah I saw the EDG vs. SKT game and obviously what I just said doesn't apply. However, I can say as a solo-q time-to-time Ori player, I've had dozens of games where I'm a bit behind and my team lacks a frontline and I ult 3-4 of them and it does a pathetic amount of damage with 0 follow up.

Paladin 0f Life4 votes

Ori wasnt beind since faker had a ton of farm but if the enemy jung is decent a behind ori is useless damage wise in this meta

Orianna isn't exclusively a utility mage she's more generally a balanced "all-around" pick. She posses some utility, but it isn't nearly as strong as dedicated Utility mages like Karma or Zilean

Fairyfleur12 votes

And she isn't as strong as Anivia when it comes to area control

TotalJerk2 votes

Anivia is a control mage.

TNHA Baritone4 votes

I agree. She has aspects of utility, she has a good bit of damage in her kit, and she has CC. Her only downside is range, and her ability to place the ball on tanks sorta helps that issue not be as horrific.

YumaS2Astral3 votes

So, are you saying that Orianna is a jack of all trades? Or in other words, LeeSin of mid lane?

Chvak10 votes

Immobility is the biggest weakness in league, so no she is not like the blind cancer fuckboy.

ChiTenshi16 votes

If she's able to freely auto-attack you, you're doing something wrong (use an ability on that b*tch).

And no, her Q > W > R combo does not one-shot anyone unless she's ahead. Plus, if she catches you with her combo, you're in a bad position.

QWAA definitely will never one shot.

ChiTenshi7 votes

Correct.

I probably should have added that in my comment, but assumed people would figure it out since QWR doesn't one-shot yet that deals more damage than QWAA.

As orianna id have to be like 5 levels ahead and it would have to be against like sona lul;

When was she considered a utility mage? She is a burst mage before anything, if you look at most mages they actually always offer utility. It doesnt just have to be a shield, stuns help teams too.

Since her release. She has more utility than any other mage.

I'm pretty certain that Lux has more...

I'm pretty certain that Lux has more...

Lux has

  • shield
  • root
  • slow
  • vision on ground

Orianna has

  • shield
  • armor/mr buff
  • slow
  • speed
  • vision on ground
  • displacement (full disable)
DuskDaUmbreon5 votes

Lux's slow+vision is an AoE lasting one, her shield can shield her entire team, and her snare hits two people.

So less utility effects, but her utility is far better quality.

LCS is not fucking regular play. In regular play she was always balanced and is one of the least nerfed champions in the game for a fucking reason. If you can't manage her then I suggest you play her and learn what counters her, I mean I always feed champs like Ahri or Vlad no matter the meta, but you dont see me going around and posting shit about them being op. And why post now when the circlejerk is real, why didn't you post this 20 days ago? Why now when she is dominating worlds (as per usual) ?? I will tell you why, because then people judge based on their in game experience and downvote you because they don't have any trouble vs a balanced champ, but now when they see super op pro mlg plays or their team lost because of a 5 man shochwave they get their pitchforks and go to the forums. All in all - fuck off from a balanced champion please :)

AquariusGine10 votes

Orianna does a bit too much damage for the utility she provides, she's been overtuned for a number of patches now

Khristophoros7 votes

after a few years you get used to it

Ori is better described as a control mage.

"Utility Mage" technically works, since she does have a fair bit of it in her kit, but that term better describes somebody like Zilean, Lissandra, or Malzahar.

TNHA Baritone4 votes

I understand why you might say "Utility" for Zilean, but not for Lissandra & Malz. Control Mages put down zones of destruction or lock down a specific enemy/group of enemies.

Utility Mages: Karma, Morgana, Zilean, etc.

TBH Riot has abandoned the idea of a utility mage because it was rather vague. CC can be a utility, but someone who locks down doesn't belong in the same section as someone who can revive someone, or shield everyone.

You mean you don't like QWEQWEQWEQWEQWE Lost chapter level up QWEEWQEWQ

Fairyfleur8 votes

Yes, she will certainly be able to use a 70, 30, and 60 mana cost spell 6 times over.

Ebonbolt2 votes

Funny how that's exactly what she does with just a lost chapter, same as most mages this season.Meanwhile lucian goes oom in 2-3 combos even with essence reaver until you get a bunch of levels and 3 items.

Votable Jester8 votes

You are 100% wrong. Ori will run oom faster than a lot of champions in lane (maybe all of them) if she plays like that, especially the meta ones.

There's a difference between exaggeration and lies.

Bishasaurus Flex7 votes

Play Syndra and hit her with 2 Q's then press R gg

Thilmer6 votes

You know, the problem is how most other mages have lost damage over time.

Mages bursting 1 or 2 enemies in a teamfigth thanks to high AoE damage used to be a thing, the problem is that rigth now most mages only do poke damage.

Abibyama5 votes

Hey, at least now she can't cheat with QW or QR where Ori triggers W or R BEFORE the ball reaches it destination

kurthl33t5 votes

Orianna on OP.gg

I mean, if she had a higher win rate, they might look to nerf her, but statistically she's pretty average. The reason she gets played a lot is because she's pretty safe--she doesn't have any abyssmally bad matchups.

If she was truly a problem, though, we would see her have a higher win rate despite her having a high play rate. Since she gets played so frequently, we would expect to see players who are less familiar with her still be able to dominate and win if she was truly OP. That's not what the numbers show, which is why Riot doesn't see her as a problem.

rtbf2256182415 votes

Well she does damage...but...it's combined with her utility. Her ultimate is cc, she has a literal shield and a movement speed amp/slow.

Fairyfleur4 votes

I can agree that her trading power in lane is overtuned for how hard she scales, but her one shot combo is not the issue.

Unless she's ahead or farmed well she can't oneshot anybody in the midgame, and, obviously, she'll oneshot squishes with a full rotation later on. All mages can do this.

Command: Win Game

Even as recent as last year I've said Orianna was overpowered (and honestly, this has been said on Riot forums since S2) but you get mobs of downvotes.

She's been a pro staple since inception.

PijemSamoVodku6 votes

In pro she was always good, in regular play she was never even overpowered, maybe season 3 and thats the only time she ever got heavier nerfs. She never broke the pro play like Kalista or Azir so there is no reason to gut her for that, all in all no nerfs coming because there is no need.
