Winrate as a measure of balance

People says that Ezreal with a 55% winrate is not a problem, and he probably is going to stay untouch for months.

But the last time Sona reached 55% winrate, she was nerfed hard in the next patch.

Winrate is relevant as an argument to say "this champion is overpowered", or not? Riot should make a decision about this already.

Thing is, win rate is only useful in context.

For example, lets say that Vel'koz had a 65% win rate, but he was only being played by .2% of the player base. What that means is that people who play him a lot. are finding success, which isn't to say that vel'koz is too strong, but rather that his player base is experience with him.

Now, in context, Ezreal has a 54.1% win rate with a 27.2% pick rate, and a 62.4% ban rate (according to League Of Graphs). What this suggests is that Ezreal has found a lot of success, with many people playing him, and the community generally dislike playing against him in his current state. So yes, Ezreal is too strong at the moment

I agree If you look corki has changed the most in pick rate last patch. He was doing great before i started seeing a zed every game which forces me to get a stop watch or zyonna every single time. Point is the meta can change and make certain champs harder to win with, but corki (i had a 80% winrate with 20 games on him) and now its dropped to about 54% because i am learning how to deal with hard counters more and im not used to playing with less farm as his waveclear is godlike

basically this, but to further add on to this point, you have to take into account the ELO these statistics are taken from. according to this: https://www.leagueofgraphs.com/rankings/rank-distribution

a little above 40% of the playerbase, with that being the highest concentration, is in silver. which means, almost half of that winrate data..... comes from average joes, not the pros in diamond+ who can actually determine something to be broken you also have to take into account how MANY people are playing that champ. if only 10 people are playing, say braum, but they all just so happen to win 7/10 games, hes now sitting at a 70% winrate.

get the picture?

edit: also globally across all ranks, Leona is sitting at 53.7%

Sona didn't hit a 55% winrate on a patch that shredded a massive portion of the game's stats and balances by replacing an entire system with a new one, though.

Except that's literally what just happened. Masteries Reforged threw the game into chaos, Sona with her 1-dimensional kit didn't take any "relearning" and decidedly used the strongest keystone, so Meddler immediately nerfed her less than 3-days out. Now on 7.23, that keystone is gutted, yet Meddler is still riding the sheeple misnomer that she's a problem, so he can nerf her even more.

Wait, are you referring to her nerfs THIS patch?

Because those came out like the day after the patch hit, her win rate is 54% AFTER those nerfs.

I thought you were referring to her last round of nerfs, not these.

When they want a champ to be "meta" or just about to release new fancy skins for him/her, it is okay as they did that on purpose (e.g. Zac). When they really broke the champ by accident and they have no business interests either atm - like Singed, Sona, etc. - then they will nerf it in 1-2 days.

But I don't think in the current situation Ezreal is the problem. It's the same thing like enchanters and Ardent Censer was. The problems are the new runes, in this case mostly Kleptomancy. Balance was quite okay around 7.20 so it would be a much wiser idea to fix the runes themselves before touching the champs who can exploit them this much.

Though, don't worry, they will nerf the champs, then fix the runes, then fix the champs who will become OP at that point, then they will start it again :) They do this on purpose and they don't want and will never make any real balance. There will be some more or less okay state around the next Worlds what they will ruin in next preseason and start the whole nonsense all over again. Just as always.

Essentially Win Rate is ONE measure of Balance, but not the ONLY ONE. So a high win rate alone is not enough to say 'x is overpowered'. But win rate is an easily accessible metric they can use to give them an idea of which champions are potential balance problems.

Riot made their decision years ago and they consistently express it. Win rate is NOT a measurement of champion strength or viability. Nerfing Sona is just Meddler's own personal vendetta. He's stated about half a dozen times that he hates the champion and wants her deleted.
