Mana regeneration has been overnerfed.

We have many different runes and all them are interesting, but mages are absolutely screwed if they don't pick Manaflow Band.

I don't exactly get why a higher variety of runes is good when picking one of them is compulsory for a whole champion class. What's the point?

Manaflow Band is trash on almost every champ, ever since it was reworked from the old version - it restores < 1k mana over the course of an entire game. Unlike ocean and most champ passives, the mana it restores is / 5 sec, instead of / sec. It's basically a Faerie Charm in terms of what it restores - and that's being generous.

At best, it gives +250 max mana for champs like anivia and ryze who build arcangel's and scale with mana, but for most champs it is just bad. I consider nimbus to be better in most situations since it will help you kite or chase after you've used your most damaging ability, and you're at your most vulnerable state, or even the magic shield vs an ap comp.

The sorcery tree in general is underwhelming, especially for mages.

FilDaFunk4 votes

TBH, as long as their kit is strong as a counterbalance, im completely fine with that. Rather have power in the champ than in their runes.

Sire Hippington3 votes

250 mana is an aditional spell rotation, add in the regen and you can do nearly two more rotation than you could without it in a full fight. it's not insane sustain, but it still makes quite a difference for many champs.

Beatrice falls25 votes

Because Sorcery tree was intended to be a secondary tree for assassins, look they get a free hexdrinker and a movement speed burst after their ult LUL

Mana isn't even an issue if you space your abilities properly and don't spam early in the game. I suggest selecting the visual option of having your mana costs on you moves so you know how much mana they are and you can properly space your mana out. mages aren't the only one's with mana issues. If anything adcs have more mana problems.

FatedSaviour8 votes

kinda true, but an adc is more useful without mana than a mage

Whiteeye Avelyn4 votes

Because they are suppose to be, Unless you just want everyone in the game to just be mages different roles will have different drawbacks.

SweedishGunner3 votes

Play Viktor without buying a secondary mana item and you'll know what mana issues look like.

When Mages stop worrying about mana they have no downside.

Disulfiram41 votes

Squishy? Skillshot-based (= their damage can be dodged)? Low on mobility (with few exceptions)? Lower burst than the ad casters? Lower dps than the ad autoattackers? Nah you're right, if they can cast their spells more than twice without mana items then they have no downsides. /s

Squishy?

That veigar tank build option

Skillshot-based (= their damage can be dodged)?

From long range usually: CC Spam spam spam spam Eventually one will land that's the laws of probability

Low on mobility (with few exceptions)?

Yeah when you can sit under tower and still hit an enemy in the middle of the lane. Who needs mobility

Lower burst than the ad casters?

There is an overall damage problem in the game so thats irrelevant

Lower dps than the ad autoattackers?

Yeah that's supposed to happen by design not sure what your complaint is about

Nah you're right, if they can cast their spells more than twice without mana items then they have no downsides.

There are mages who have no lack of mana during Laning phase despite continuous spam/poke. That's not the case with all of them despite the mana changes earlier this season. Perhaps they are due for another pass.

Frankly it seems like you want to just not have worry about mana while being able to build full AP.

Mages are intended to be mana gated.

An assasin. Bursts hard.
Stop the presses something remarkable has happened. No wait nvm that's by design.

FatedSaviour4 votes

sigh, let me try to explain this to you, if you dont get it by me explaining it then its a lost cause tank veigar build means unless you get semi fed laning phase you're fucking useless until 40 minutes in, especially considering you wont be buying mana items on tank veigar really even with the long range most of these skillshots are slow enough to dodge if you're sitting under a tower and spam poking you are going to run out of mana so godam fast and probably not cs well ur right on burst and kinda right on continuous damage but still tell me mages who have spam poke and not many mana issues, nearly all i can think of run out of mana pretty quickly if they are poking efficiently, and the point castergilgamesh made about akali is she can

just not have worry about mana while being able to build full ap

aezens3 votes

To be fair they not only have better burst but better dps as well (especially ad assassins). I don´t have a problem with assasssin´s burst but getting "bursted" 3 times in a row within 30 sec might be a problem.

Mages are good because of there wave clear capabilites. That´s also the main reason for the mana reg adjustments and the upcoming changes to minion life scaling will affect mages the most as well.

Regarding to your previous post skillshots actually are "skill" shots at close to mid range only. If you hit a long range cc your oponent most likely fucked up (unless you are Chogath). Also mage damage wasn´t that much of a problem. That´s why Arcane Comet didn´t need adjustments. Last but not least: ever wondered why mages are in midlane almost exclusively? Because if you dare to use your abilities to farm minions you are prey without your tower or team nearby for the next several seconds.

If mages didn't have to use mana they'd be S tier and uncontested.

Oh look - when Morello destroyed all mana problems THEY were S tier with no competition for multiple seasons. Hmm..

LOL.

When were mages S tier?

I have seen AD champions dominating the game since season 5 at least, ADCs in particular.

Disembark5 votes

S tier all of season 6. Ah, I remember when it literally didn't matter what happened on the map - and the Syndra/Orianna/Viktor/Malz would melt 3+ champions at the same time in 1 rotation. AP champs were S tier as Support (Zyra, Brand), mid lane (fuck ton), AND top lane (Rumble, Kennen). And AP champions were op jungle too (Elise, Nidalee pick/ban S tier).

S tier most of season 7. AD champions got to shine for like 3 patches at the start of S7 when lethality was broken.

Don't think a single AD mid got picked in 2016/2017 worlds. Probably not in 2015 worlds either.

But dude, you're bronze. The ACTUAL meta has no effect there.

Mogarl3 votes

season 6 Syndra, Orianna, Viktor, Malz, Zyra, Brand, Elise, Nidalee

Sayiing it was all of season 6 is a load of shit for the laners, and none of these had anything to do with mana regen. Mid season kit changes and rylais busted most of them.

Elise and Nidalee are assassin junglers not mages. They became meta because Elise is ap spider Lee and Nidalee had stupidly fast clears.

On Season 7, mages didn't force ad assassins out marksman and supports did.

yeah causer perma pushing assassins out totally didn't make them unviable

Mogarl1 votes

It had just as much to do with it as supports stopping them from doing anything, AD assassins sharing their damage type with the omnipresent adc, and a class of champions 3 times their size being played only in the mid lane.

Akali Ekko Fizz Katarina Leblanc Talon Zed Kassadin midlane assassins (MonkeyKing don't know if he exists since nerfs)

Ahri Anivia Annie AurelionSol Azir Cassiopeia Lissandra Lux Malzahar Orianna Ryze Swain Syndra Taliyah TwistedFate Veigar Velkoz Viktor Vladimir Xerath Ziggs Zoe midlane mages (Brand Heimerdinger brand is played more sup and heim is more bot now I think idk) Galio Irelia Yasuo other champions that occasionally inhabit midlane

Mages actually can run OOM and can't sit mid infinitely wave clearing.

Someone call the cops!

Somebody Love Me10 votes

The problem is even late game when it's mostly team fighting, they will run oom after a few rotations unless they have item 3048 oritem 3027 . Unless they have blue, mages are really the only class that has to recall when full build because they don't have a method of healing like other classes, and their method of dealing damages is very limited.

Yes and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Mages should have to manage their mana to be effective.

Somebody Love Me4 votes

Why do they have to be the only one to do so? That's the problem. Other classes can do what they do, but they're the only class that has to watch the mana bar like they're still in lane phase.

AirKingNeo1 votes

because they're the mana based class? Like, top laners have to manage the fact they're melee.

Somebody Love Me1 votes

Top laners are given stuff to deal with that though

AirKingNeo1 votes

but not really

and mages have mana items.

Anidan2 votes

In general, mages tend to have the most game-warping abilities (not always, but they do tend toward that direction), alongside tanks. Tanks are also generally not very friendly on their mana pools, and they shouldn't be. When you're packing abilities that can turn or define teamfights, you need to be on some sort of finite resource so you don't literally just spam it and make the entire game revolve around you.

Normally I'm all for making mages interesting and helping them out since that was my pet role when I played, but removing a finite resource just because other champions don't have to deal with it is a poor way to balance mages.

sobi9991 votes

Read the message you replied to very carefully. He didn't advice to give infinite mana to mages (late or early game), he stated that whilst other classes can heal off from minions, or do enough DPS from AA's or those that use energy; mages on the other hand without mana are handicapped.

In lane, nearly all the champions need mana management, except energy based champions, but mages also now have to worry about managing mana late game (no morellos passive), whereas other champions at this point, at the very least can farm/damage with minimal mana usage or with just AA, hence he said "their method of dealing damages is very limited."

Moral of the story: Give us more mana regen late game (when lost chapter is of no use), instead of us buying item 3027 item 3040

Krully2 votes

tbh, one rotation of spells is all thats needed to take out anything that isnt a tank

Somebody Love Me2 votes

Thats how it is for almost every ability based damage champion, but non mages don't run the risk of running oom doing it

Saianna6 votes

Riot never really liked mages. Maybe few exceptions that were closer to assassins like Ahri, then yea, but overall, if there's 1 class with nerfs on top of nerfs then its mages.

Slim Gragas5 votes

Mana hasn't even been an issue for me you must just be bad at managing it, while it also depends on the champion. If you really have hard time holding yourself back from spamming spells then get tear, though you'll be behind on damage. If you REALLY want to be more handicapped you can even pick Biscuit Delivery+Timewarp tonic, then buy Corrupting Potion and Dark Seal in game. Though i really suspect Corrupting Potion is due for a nerf and it will be soon as it's being seen on majority of champions in solo lanes instead of doran's items.

5050BS5 votes

There is a reason why these are highly played. Aatrox Akali Katarina Rengar Tryndamere Yasuo Zed

AirKingNeo1 votes

they are? When is Kat, Rengar, Tryndamere, Yasuo, and Zed being picked?

ShadowMagi4 votes

It forces everyone to buy item 3070 "Tear of the Goddess". Your mana is fine after that. You sell it later if you don't want to upgrade it. I am not saying it is right but it is how itemization works for me now.

In a game with a lot of fighting, Presence of Mind is 10x as good as manaflow band.

Sire Hippington4 votes

same with tanks, if i don't go either manaflow+iceborn or take abyssal mask, i have no boon from liveing long as i will run oom anyway and become a glorified minion

Honestly, i think the regen part of it could be given baseline to everyone...would make you feel much better about getting a big manapool if you have atleast some %based sustain to back it up.

Beacon Academy3 votes

I remember when mana management was a skill.

Since when did we become entitled to mana?

Somebody Love Me2 votes

What do you mean? Back in the day Morello gave mana back on takedown. Ever since the lost chapter item overhaul, there's been less mana to go around. Then the mana nerfs. Now mages gotta go corrupting timewarp biscuits dark seal to not go oom all the time in lane.

False. I don't know what games you're playing because I don't see half of the problems that boards say that mages have in game. Perhaps only happens in your Silver / Gold ranked games, I don't know.

Krully2 votes

presence of mind gives you mana

Jinzo Torrance2 votes

Every class should go back to have meaningful mana cost (no dumbshit champions like Darius or Fiora who are basically manaless with their mana costs being all lower than 50 and them doing 50% of someone hp by pressing M2 > Trinity proc) and energy/health/no resource champs should be hard nerfed in some way since they don't have to manage anything.

sobi9991 votes

This thread was about mages lacking mana regen, but it turned out to be a battle between mana users (regardless of being mage or not) and non-mana users (very few of them). Sighs
