"We want to promote Strategic Diversity this season!"- Riot Balance Team

Meanwhile Vayne and Jinx are picked in around 66% of all games on NA and Thresh Blitzcrank Braum Leona have dominated the meta for two seasons and no changes in sight for either Jinx/Vayne or these tank/utility/cc/fighter/high dmg supports.

Which is fucking weird since he was always good and his last update in March made him even better. I see him all the time now. Did someone play him in LCS and/or a famous streamer?

Same reason lux viktor and every other mage are overpowered right now overbuffed

Voluug134 votes

They havent even touched Lux aside from some QoL changes.

Burst mages are more played because people need someone to burst the OP out of Vayne.

Veigar is a counterpick to Ahri/Annie/Vicktor/TF, the most played AP midlaners right now.

Dr Poro8 votes

Do you have any idea how big the impact of those QoL changes were? Getting earlier access to her shield, being able to immediately pop her E (which was otherwise only possible with 0 ping and you had to spam your key), lower mana cost mid-lategame and being able to land a full snare from behind an enemy minion. These things together turn an okay mage into a great mage. They buffed her reliability on a fronts which makes her a perfect champion for soloQ. She'll still be meh for LCS but that's because she doesn't have good enough waveclear (her abilities have high CD and one Q and E can't clear a wave) but this is less important in soloQ.

Veigar is a counterpick to Ahri/Annie/Vicktor/TF, the most played AP midlaners right now.

Actually most played midlaners are Yasuo, Ahri, Zed, Lux, Annie in that order.

Bârd2 votes

The changes to lux were NOT QOL.

They changed the way her skills worked.

By definition, not QOL.

You may want to re-check the patch notes, Veigar was buffed again more recently. (Assists give +5 AP and his W got a bit of the delay removed).

Same goes for the folks saying Lux wasn't changed beyond QoL changes, her Q was buffed recently, lower mana cost and now deals full damage and root to the second target.

Jeez, I didn't even see that being slipped in there. I knew about the Lux, but I guess I didn't scroll down far enough :P Thanks.

Guys let's be honest here, the support role is and always has been the most diverse array of viable champions among each season. While not every support is super popular like our ever annoying Hookers, Each has a very unique identity that makes them great for different compositions.

Karma Lulu Janna Nautilus Braum Blitzcrank Thresh Leona Soraka Annie Morgana Sona Nami Zyra Velkoz Alistar

All incredibly viable based on your composition and the enemy's, and most of these supports have seen competitive play at various stages and meta shifts.

Edit: HOW COULD I FORGET BARD! Bard ~~~<3 Ootay!

At this time though, playing the "mage support" is really risky. The problem is that tanky/initiator supports have as much damage and utility as these "utility support mages" There needs to be a reason to choose "mage supports" over Thresh/Braum/Leona.

The Only Doctor4 votes

Morgana Shield blocks all CC until it runs out. Always a good pick against CC heavy comps. Lulu works really well as long as you can maintain distance. And Annie is terrifying in her own right, especially once she has Tibbers. It's all about how the team comp works for you. Between those 3 alone, you can do favorably in most match-ups.

KING OF MASKS3 votes

Okay maybe I'm dead wrong but I'm pretty sure Morg's spellshield only blocks one spell (CC or otherwise), after that it just absorbs incoming magic damage. It does not "block all CC until it runs out," unless I am wildly misremembering.

WRONG!!!

it does block all cc until shield is broken

Where is Taric

Senteth2 votes

In the workshop, awaiting his update. ;)

RisenDarkKnight3 votes

Poor zilean. Still not viable months after his "rework" (aka nerf).

BottleCapster3 votes

I really feel for Zilean. I had such high hopes when they announced he'd get a mini-work, but his new playstyle is too unreliable for me to put him on the list of "Viable" supports for my examples. It was a similar case as why Taric isn't on the list, but that's also due to the fact that Taric is in the process of getting a makeover and his current state is mediocre at best.

BeatRushVII5 votes

The community doesn't really want bot lane diversity , it only acts like it does.

Every time a champion is changed to the point that it can go bot, the community FREAKS the hell out and demands that they be nerfed. Especially if they make the whole "afk farm for 20 minutes adc" strategy difficult

Well hopefully instead of pointing out the mistake in the final part of season 5 we can try to diversify ourselves as a playerbase in champions we play in the coming preseason and onwards.

One possibility, not following the meta 100%.

Yeah, I hope so too, but its unfair to the playerbase to have to wait for the pre-season every year in order to see these changes. Vayne and Jinx have been at around that 66% pick rate for 3 months now. It's getting to be really annoying and painful to watch/play.

Ralanr3 votes

It's also our responsibility as the player base to decide how much the meta affects the game throughout the season.

Don't like the current meta picks? Play outside of them. It may not be much, but if more people do it then they might see some interesting things.

You know people complain about Fiora? Pantheon is a good counter to her based on his passive vs hers.

Have you tried to play against Vayne/Jinx with "outside meta picks?" It's not fun, because no matter how hard you stomp them in lane, Vayne will buy a BOTRK and instantly hit late game, Jinx takes one kill to snowball out of control and will outdamage any ADC by a long shot. It is our responsibility to make meta shifts, but when the majority of a class is weak, there is no real reason to pick them. You are putting yourself at a disadvantage by NOT playing Vayne/Jinx

Silents4293 votes

Ashe Hi, I play ADC on the occasion and stomp there asses with ease, they never become some "god mode" at any point.

You are just carrying on the bs that this forum passes around.

Don't like picking vayne and winning? Pick Urgot. I'm sure you will have the same success. It is obviously only because choosing to play Vayne. It isn't as if people don't try other champs, because I see it all the time, but to be quite honest, a lot of the champs that are strong have less weaknesses, which is the main problem. It isn't them being so strong as them being less weak.

Pantheon for example has VERY clear weaknesses. Fiora has a lot of ways to get around weaknesses on top of have very good strengths. It sounds good in theory to just say play other stuff, but it isn't realistically that simple, unless you don't care about winning.

Ralanr1 votes

This is probably a stupid question to ask: But is winning all that matters?

Xonra1 votes

This is probably a stupid question to ask: But is winning all that matters?

If I'm playing normals, ARAM, dominion, Twisted Treeline, etc, I don't care about winning, it is fun and I have no other thoughts about it.

When I play ranked, I play with the intention to win in order to get LP, in order to climb, etc etc. Sure it can be fun, but if you are not playing to win in ranked, then you shouldn't be playing ranked, fun or not, you don't play to lose do you?

The point is, if you are going into a game and you know x,y and z are the optimal choices, but you pick p just because "I choose not to follow the Meta" then you are very likely putting yourself at a disadvantage, putting your team at a disadvantage, and that isn't fair to your team.

There are cases where the best pick isn't that much better than the 5th best pick that "isn't meta" and that is one thing, but when we are talking about Vayne, who even pro casters joke about for being the strongest ADC by a wide margin, and you choose to play something far weaker, then you are handicapping yourself for honestly not much reason.

It isn't up to the playerbase to try and be stubborn to change the meta, because that won't really solve anything aside from win rates to go down and the meta champs win rates to go up. That doesn't really prove anything. As I've said, the top picks are top picks for a reason.

Sirsir5 votes

Sadly thats not realistic. I played Kalista Darius bot lane, who did I get matched vs? The Nazi lane, Cait and Thresh. Most people don't want to have fun, they want to win. The meta wins, thats why its meta.

Quil Evrything2 votes

Thresh Blitzcrank Braum Leona have dominated the meta for two seasons and no changes in sight for either Jinx/Vayne or these tank/utility/cc/fighter/high dmg supports.

"Strategic Diversity"

a choice of 4, seems reasonably diverse to me

Sirsir5 votes

Yeah except they are variations of the same thing: Tanky CC. Thresh and Braum are the only real supports on that list, the other 2 are just kill lanes with no real support skills.

BottleCapster9 votes

Did you just say that Leona isn't a real support?

Voluug135 votes

She was designed as a Toplaner. I remember the days of S2 Leona top all too well. Her passive was the only problem about her toplaning.

Its like a reverse Taric.

planters2 votes

never knew she was designed for top. That's actually really funny lol.

Voluug132 votes

I mean toplaner as ''a fighter and not a 0cs support'' champion.

planters2 votes

i know it's just that with her passive i honestly never thought she wasnt for support

Nahara1 votes

Her passive as is really doesn't feel suited to a top-lane position... I wonder if it was nerfed somewhere in the past so only an ally could proc it...

Voluug133 votes

No, it was from an age previous to specific lane design. It was supposed to be a teamfight/ganking passive.

Baron Von Bangin1 votes

What? Leona was never played top in S2. Those days were all about Yorik, Jayce, Singed, Shen, and Jax. Maybe Darius at the height of his release. Never Leona

Sirsir1 votes

She was DESIGNED as a top laner, similar to Blitz. But they both lacked damage and had insane CC so they made a good pair with champs with high damage but low CC (ADCs)

Baron Von Bangin1 votes

That's fine. But there were never "the days of Leona top" In season 2. They never happened.

Sirsir1 votes

Yup. Supports have support abilities. Shields, buffs, heals THAT CAN BE SHARED.

Red Ryu2 votes

Leona has been dominating the meta? What?

JJI7441 votes

It's an odd thing, Leona has been one of the most played champs throughout the season, but consistantly drops in popularity the further you go up the ladder. To the point that in pro-play she is an uncommon pick.
