Dear Junglers: I Am Sorry...

Stephenizgod··39 votes·4,072 views

So i am trying to learn Jungle and I hate it... i freakin hate it... I get blue and already Bot lane is pinging for help, im a noob so i tell them to wait so i can get to level 3 at least. They die while im at red, so i think i should have gone down there? idk its ok i tell them play safe and i will gank. I don't even have machete upgrade yet when they are already pinging for help and top died, so im on my way bot when mid dies...... I try to gank bot but they ignore me and i end up almost dying. So Top is dead again for the 6th time and yelling at me, Mid is pinging for help, im trying to get sated but our ADC has cleared my entire bot jungle and i am getting destroyed by their fed top and mid. At this point i want to quit.

Second game, literally the same thing happens. I can't even clear my jungle without everyone constantly pinging for help. Our ADC just straight up leaves at one point.

Third game, i do a bit better, i gank a few times some of which is successful. I have Dragon control too i get 3 drags before they get 1. But ADC wont group no matter what and again is clearing my jungle, Zed keeps ulting Poppy and Illaoi while Jhin sits back and kills us. Me and Garen go in and can kill a few but with Lucian gone off by himself clearing my jungle, we keep getting engaged on and killed. Lucian slows down my sated by 5-7 minutes plus I keep dying. I finally get sated and start actually dealing damage but my team is just not following up and im left alone in most "teamfights". end of story we lose because Lucian fails to group for the 100th time.

So im sorry for blaming you when you don't gank, im sorry for complaining that you are farming your jg when we need help. I understand now how hard it is to deal with lanes that are losing, all of them lose and blame you, its terrible. When you are trying to get sated, every stack counts, so im sorry for taking your jungle too.

EDIT: I am very surprised to see so many people giving me a ton of advice, its super helpful and honestly you guys have convinced me to continue learning Jungle. There are so many comments I can't respond to them all, but I am reading them and I want to thank everyone. I will continue to practice Jungle and thanks to your tips I'm sure I will improve.

People will always try to blame someone else for their mistakes. Junglers are just a convenient target since they can influence any lane during the laning phase.

I would generally recommend ignoring allies who repeatedly call for help. I'm not going to say that you should ignore them completely, but don't come gank them just because they are begging for help; use your own judgement to determine whether helping them is beneficial for both you and your team.

Also, I will generally gank for allies who are providing useful information. If my ally is timing the summoner spells of his lane opponent, tracking where and when they ward and are positioning the wave properly to facilitate a gank, it's generally safe to assume that they are at least reasonably competent. Those are generally the players you want to help since they are less likely to throw their lead or make stupid mistakes.

If you are looking for some champions to help you learn how to jungle, I would probably recommend trying: Amumu Volibear Gragas Zac XinZhao Warwick

Their combination of durability, clear-speed and CC will help you gank, farm and survive fights while you learn how to path appropriately, identify good targets for ganks and balance assisting your team against farming.

Anyways, if you are trying to learn jungle, I had typed up some tips beforehand.

I would suggest watching videos by high-ELO and/or professional junglers (i.e. Nightblue3, Stonewall008, Valkyrin, and foxdropLOL). They will typically provide a lot of useful tips while playing and you can often see or hear their decision process and some optimizations throughout the game.

Off the top of my head, some basic optimizations may be:

  • Prioritize farming unless a gank is very easy to succeed. You need items and levels to be useful, so you don't want to fall behind and waste time. I'm not going to say you should ignore lanes, but make sure to get camps between ganks and know when you just have to hard-farm to catch up.
  • Use hard-CC when the monster camps are about to attack you to cancel that attack and delay their next.
  • Each of the smite buffs are quite useful in different situations. Be sure to take proper advantage of them.
    • Raptor's buff is great for ganking
    • Gromp buff provides extra damage during clears and fights, especially for champions with a lot of health
    • Krug's buff reduces the damage you take while clearing and lets champions without CC kill Scuttle Crab faster
    • Wolf buff is useful when you are being counter-jungled or invaded (or after your initial towers have fallen).
  • If you have a weak early clear, Krugs -> Raptor's -> Red Buff is probably the route that conserves the most health.
  • Kill the little Raptors and the little Krug first on single-target clearers. They deal a significant amount of damage for their health value, so you will be healthier if they die early.
  • If you think the enemy jungler will invade you early game, it can be safer to start on a buff camp rather than a little camp since you are less likely to be where they are looking.
  • Attack Speed is extremely efficient at clearing on most junglers. I'd recommend using about 15% on champions when you need to speed up their clear even if they don't use the stat much later (with a few exceptions, such as Nidalee and Evelynn).
  • Keep a pink ward out (or in your inventory) whenever possible. This is important for every champion, but I thought I should emphasis it. There isn't really a good reason not to.

As far as ganking is concerned:

  • When possible, conserve your gap-closer while ganking. If you can get to the enemy champion without using your mobility spell(s), then you can save it to catch them after they try to escape (Flash, dash, blink, etc).
  • Melee champions should try to stay between the enemy and their escape route. You should be trying to move backwards (towards their escape) in-between attacks so that you can body-block them and slow their escape. This also leaves you closer to them if they try to dash on blink past you.
  • Use Raptor's smite buff to determine if you have been spotted by wards when ganking to reduce the risk of them escaping or receiving a counter-gank.
  • It can be risky to gank top-lane while Dragon is up since the enemy team can just group and take it 4v3. I'd recommend ganking top-lane early if possible (after your initial clear) and when Dragon is down; that lane can be quick snowbally due to isolation, so you want to get your ally ahead.
  • Learn to recognize the general times when buff camps spawn during games. If you see the enemy gank bottom lane while their top-side buff is up, you can go steal it from them.
  • Watch when top and bottom lane initially go into lane. If that lane has leashed for their jungler (missing health, mana, or showed up to lane a bit late), then you know where the enemy jungler has likely started and where they will end their clear (where is closest for them to gank).
  • If you have killed the enemy laner, you can either allow your laner to freeze or shove the lane into the enemy tower. If you shove the wave under tower and the next minion wave is coming up, it can be helpful to proxy it to ensure that the wave fully resets and the enemy laner misses as much as possible. This is very situational though and you will have to learn when through experience.

Other tips:

  • Whenever possible, walk up to the enemy champion during a gank and save your gap-closer for after they use their escape abilities.
  • Watch the enemy laners when they go into lane. Whichever lane shows up later and/or missing mana will likely indicate which side of the jungle the enemy jungler started on (which is useful for predicting gank paths and for counter-jungling).
  • When against aggressive early counter-junglers (i.e. Shaco) it can be a good idea to start on your buff camp and/or to start on a different side than you usually do. If he invades your buff, you've already taken it and/or you aren't there to be killed.
  • Watch the minimap to see when and where the enemy goes to ward, which laners are pushing, which laners are vulnerable
  • Know, roughly, how most laning matchups go so that you can prioritize which lanes are the easiest to gank or require an early gank to decide the matchup.
  • If you have blown an enemies Flash during a gank but haven't killed them, swing back around immediately after an gank them again. Many people don't expect it
  • If you've killed an enemy during a previous gank in top lane, kill them again immediately after they return to lane. They likely won't have wards up yet and a second back-to-back death can be enough to completely crush any chance that opponent has to recover the lane.
  • Top laners rarely bother warding the lane bushes. As such, lane ganks can be quite surprising and effective.
  • When you kill an enemy laner, shove the minion wave into the tower so they miss gold and experience and so that the minion wave will reset to the middle of the lane. If you can get away with it, clear the upcoming minion wave as well to ensure the reset and maximum missed minions.

You will learn a lot through experience, but these tips should help you at the start.

Wow that is a ton of very detailed and well thought-out information, thank you! Im definitely going to keep practicing and i am positive this will help.

Im surprised that this post started out as a half-rant half-apology but turned into a bunch of people giving me advice on how to improve my Jungling. The nice side of the community can be very very nice.

Most players are generally rather nice and helpful when asked politely

Glad to help.

Thank god for the permalink button. I can now send this comment to my friends who are trying to pick up Jungling. Thank you for this.

You're welcome. Always glad to help.

I wrote up most of those tips quite a while ago and I just have them saved in Evernote. Makes it quite easy to drop them into threads.

Beginner tip for jungling: Pretend bot lane doesn't even exist. Camp top early game. If you get a kill on the top laner don't leave! Duck out of vision and get back in the lane bush, wait for him to TP back in and kill him again. Odds are you can take his turret now and it'll tilt the living crap out of him. It'll get your top laner a nice juicy lead which always helps. It's much easier to gank top than bot.

If your bot lane is saying stuff like "GG jg didn't gank" screw em. Play your own game.

DO NOT LISTEN TO YOUR LANERS. They are all gonna be asking for help. It's your decision to make, don't be afraid to say screw them and farm. You can't get so caught up ganking that you forget to farm.

Weathered1 votes

Actually, bot lane is the most important lane to gank (at first at least).

Bot>Mid>Top

If bot fails miserably, the next best influential player is usually mid. Unless top is a Fiora or something, they are usually playing a tank or champion who does well regardless of laning phase.

darkmatchwaldo2 votes

I'd much rather camp my top lane and get them ahead though. Of course this varies by game and of course i don't ignore my bot lane all of the time. But if i have a strong 2v2 lane like Kalista Thresh...i'm not ganking for them. They don't need my help to win fights. On the flip side, if they have something like Annie Blitzcrank Thresh i'm probably not gonna gank that lane either. It's just not worth the risk of getting focused and killed because my bot lane wasn't paying attention to my 9000 pings.

It's REALLY easy to get your top lane up 40 cs, a tower, and 4 kills in the first ten minutes of the game. That's why i said beginner tip. If your top laner is someone like Fiora Ryze Tryndamere Riven that can pretty much guarantee your team a 30 minute win if you know what to do with that lead.

Split push pressure is king in low Elo. A fed top laner that constantly is drawing 2-3 people to that side of the map is going to make it insanely easy for the rest of your team to 4v3 and take objectives.

I play jungle, and I spam pings when I start being unable to reach my turret :c it's like being CC'd for the whole game... no possibility of input, you just go from grey screen to grey screen.

Ideally you don't reach that point before 5 minutes, though.

Chaos Milk Tea3 votes

You don't gank when pinged for. You look at enemy hp and if their lane is pushed or not. People don't ping when they have a gank set up, they ping when they are losing which you probably can't help. Many people don't even look at their jungler's level or HP before pinging for the help.

Stephenizgod1 votes

Im currently trying to learn how to efficiently clear and when to gank. It is really hard to do that when everyone is dying and asking for help :(, how do I know who to be ganking when everyone is losing?

Chaos Milk Tea2 votes

Pick either the lane that actually looks salvageable or the one who has the strongest carry worth saving. If a lane is completely losing and died 10 times, often times walking in can get you killed too.

And if you go in and kill the super fed guy, sure you get shut down gold but that laner is just gonna need you again later.

Stephenizgod2 votes

So basically pick the lane that will be most useful later and baby them if it is possible to do so?

Chaos Milk Tea2 votes

Pretty much. I mean if you see an easy gank, take it because free gold is free gold but if someone is losing it's often because their opponent is better than them and they will just start losing again as soon as you leave. In an even matchup though, you will be able to give your lane an advantage.

And sometimes, you just gotta farm. Don't fall into the trap of being underleveled because all you've been doing is ganking.

Weathered1 votes

Really, your best bet is to watch some jungler streams on Twitch and play a lot of jungle. You'll start to understand, and I feel that's the best way to learn it. Understand and learn yourself instead of getting the answers on paper (or screen) :P

Yea im going to start watching some Jungle guides than just watch people jungle before I continue, i don't really know what Im suppose to be even looking for most of the time.

One thing you might like is that when using an AA based jg like Yi, Nocturne. Smite krugs to start, it makes a full clear so much easier.

: if the enemy has a tank toplane and both top and bot are feeding, better gank bot We got used to all the flame and hate from laners. Also it matters your division. In silver ofc everyone blames the jungler. If you see your teammates feeding just gank one lane at a time, but only if you have the opportunity to do a decent gank. Focus on more carry oriented champions in your team to help in lane with a gank. Better gank a vayne/leona bot than a morgana mid if both are feeding.(a zed enemy mid should be ganked tho) A tip: dont be hesitant to gank if the enemy "warded" the lane bush. They are most likely going to push much harder as they are more confident with their lanes warded. There are more gank paths than just the bush. I like to gank the warded enemy lanes sometimes, kill them and say "map awareess" in chat. That makes them feel like some noobs who deserve bronze. If you see an enemy that has a loosing streak in match history, gank them a lot. A tilted enemy is worthless for their team. Jungling and ganking has to do with psychology too. If you mastered that you'll climb in no-time. Litterally with that tactic ive climbed from bronze to gold in 1 month and im fast approaching to plat, and some other things ofc. Also focus on dragon a lot, lot more. Early dragons are not warded, do them solo. Noone expects them. You dont have to be fed to carry a game.

warwick and yi are beginner junglers, if you wanna gank alot but not pre 6 go with warwickk his gank 6 is really good, yi is yi you farm til sated you can go clean up or go behind bot lane if they're pushed. if you want a brutal ganker pre 6 or even after 6 go with panth the only thing is that his clears is horrible.

T RexHasTinyArms1 votes

Hey man, welcome to the native land of masochists. Jungle is really fun if you're willing to stick with it long enough to get comfortable and know when stuff is and isn't your fault. You gotta develop resilience to know when you can't blame yourself for not winning someone's lane, or when you can safely ignore the flaming top lane bc your boy is the best lane on your team and an easy gank anyway. I really suggest watching some videos and seeing how much impact a good jg can have bc it is huge and really rewarding. Reignover has a couple past broadcast games up on twitch currently if you can't catch him streaming and I think his gank patterns are interesting and he is crazy good at tracking the enemy jg and stealing their camps if they are ganking and he can't gank or counter their gank.

Dryditch1 votes

Jungle is rather difficult when you play sated champions in soloqueue unless it's Yi or WW

Personally, I find that running a CC heavy tank in the jungle is the best way to make my ganks useful. Optimizing your jungle clear is important, but if your laners are having their shit kicked in so hard they can't hold a tower past 3 minutes, that's on them, and you need to snowball another lane.

bbb1 votes

I personally favor Kindred with devourer too, and it isn't that difficult.

Gommunism1 votes

Warrior Kindred is so much better. Hell, a CDR Cap Rush build is arguably the best thing. You have a pretty short CD on Q no matter if W is active or not once you get the CDR and it gives W a shorter CD so more 2 sec Q's. And it pretty much already serves as an auto-reset so you don't need the attack speed so early on. I get an AS item such as item 3153 item 3085 oritem 3094 usually as my fourth or fifth item after item 1412 item 3158 item 3142. Then my last one or two could be item 3053 item 3139 or item 3742. It works extremely well and helps for an easy transition into the mid to late game where Kindred slightly falls off depending on how many passive stacks you have.

EDIT: item 1412 could also be sold for item 3078 or item 3812 later on. Probably after the fourth item. Both synergize extremely well with Q.

Skorpio1 votes

Something I learned the hard way and sometimes still fight with: a gank doesn't HAVE to result in a kill. Sometimes burning that flash is all you need, don't dive under a tower unless 100% sure they're dead.

I've had a game where all it took was burning mid flash at level 3. My own mid lane leblanc then proceeded to farm kills off the opponent and start roaming. That flash was literally the biggest accomplishment. Now, had I dove under tower trying to finish the kill I would have given up the kill and made the game that much harder.

Also, I'm sure it's been said, but camping a top lane that didn't take tp can be worth. Everything's they're forced from lane they lose that much more and fall even more behind.

Rundus11 votes

I understand you were playing a sated jungler, but I have something you may wish to consider: Shaco and other early-cheese junglers. Now, with Shaco specifically you can choose between getting two camps very quickly and running mid for a super early gank or insta-clearing your buff (w/o leash or smite might i add) and getting a cheeky invade with your smite up against an enemy who used theirs on their first camp (or just taking the buff for free if they started on the other side). A good Shaco can do a lot. Lv 2 burning mid's flash is worth a ton too. Against predictable foes, you can often invade their first buff, gank mid, then invade the 2nd buff before heading top. I only say this because you said you wanted to keep learning jungle. If ganking is your issue, Shaco fixes it. You only need to learn how to gank while still getting camps when possible. If you aren't for that sort of jungler though, I wish you the best of luck in your other endeavors. Most of what I was going to say for advice is already said elsewhere, so I just thought I'd present you with my favorite jungler. Never know when another Shaco player might arise.

I feel your struggle. While you're still getting used to it, I strongly suggest you build Tracker's Knife instead of the other two items (the machete upgrade that gives you wards).

This has two very distinct advantages. The first is that you CANNOT MISS SMITE. I can't count the number of times I've been ready to secure dragon but I mis clicked and Smited an enemy champ instead. If you can't smite champs, you can't miss and give up dragons.

The second reason this is helpful is that even if you can't leave your jungle right away you can ping for days. Ward their red, ward their blue. When you see them, ping. Let your laners know where the jungler is and they can fall back. If you have an ally with a global ult he can snipe someone trying to lifesteal after a gank. Early wards are amazing. You also get sweeper early so you can clear wards for your laners.

jungle can be difficult for new players, especially if you're not level 30 or don't have access to good runes or masteries yet. Also, winning your laners lanes for them isn't your job. the best tip i can give to you is constantly look at lanes and constantly be aware of everyone's hp. I've also been a jungle main since s3 so feel free to add me. i think there's a lot more that i can teach you on a game by game basis rather than blessing your eyeballs with an enormously long post.

if someone in lane gets fed like 6/0 4/0 and shit, just ignore that lane and camp another lane that can carry or camp a lane thats very vulnerable at ganks or pushed up. when they get fed like 4/0 or 5/0 theres really no hope but 3 man gank or get someone or you fed. if alot are feeding you need to gank the most vulnerable lane and camp it, either the laner snowballs or you do.
